For real man, I respect the *Hell* out of your sense of restraint and self-control for Warhammer purchases. I barely made it a year before I opened the financial floodgates and just grab what I wanted right away if I wanted it badly enough. Thankfully I've pumped the breaks a bit on that, but. . . I'm sure I'll be ready to open my wallet again once I see all the new Stormcast set to come out within the next 2-3 months.
I think $120 per month for a hobby is reasonable if it's in the family budget. The initial buy in is daunting for anyone but the reward is so worth it.
I tried to get back in to things last year, and the increased FOMO killed me. When I was a kid, I always had some trouble sticking to one GW system or army at a time, but now the FOMO is straight up weapons grade!
I had a rule in my days of playing warhammer; I would not buy something else until I had painted the previous purchase. Mostly, I stuck to this (mostly), but it was not helped by my having to walk by a GW store on my way home from work :D I've found that this is a hobby that is very prone to engendering impulse buys.
Great restraint. Dude, when I got into this hobby… I got into this hobby. I was almost buying a 2000 point army monthly. By the end of my first year I had 8 armies. Highest I got up to was 10 all in 40K. Once my friend and I started to get into AoS, I sold all but 4 armies and now I have 4 AoS armies. This hobby isn’t too bad if you have 1-3 armies but dang, me having 8 can be rough if you want to keep them up to date. Moral of the story, never do what I’ve done lol pick 1-3 armies, focus on them.
this is exactly what I am not allowing myself to happen. I am limiting myself to 4 Old World Armies with a few mercenary groups to spice it up here and there. And 2 40k armies, and I am not even sure about 40k yet. I most likely will just cut myself off at Old World only unless I can't get enough Old World games.
dont buy books, all of the info you need is available free online. ALSO CONSIDER SECOND HAND! I have built so many armies for 50% off msrp because they were built already. It helps others get other things they need and helps you get into new armies.
I love the lore and art/photos in the books, so I will always at least consider them. I also love building the models, so pre-built ones takes value away IMO. But I have looked into second hand. There isnt a big offering in my region, but its something ill keep my eye on.

To be fair a 450$ initial investment is less than a current games console lol. I don't know how much I've spent on GW models over many years but it's a lot. I got out of the hobby in 2022 and started collecting pokemon cards. Let me tell you, if you're interested in collecting full sets of cards it quickly becomes way more expensive than warhammer. And if you're also into playing the game while collecting then doubly so. I did that for about a year and it was honestly way less relaxing than collecting 40k. It felt like I was sprinting constantly to catch up to the "new set of cards" that was popping up every 2 months. I decided for the money I was spending it was more economical and more relaxing to just start collecting warhammer again, so that's what I did lol. I now have around 2k black templars for 40k (including 2 3d printed landraiders) and recently got the skaventide box as well as the seraphon spearhead box giving me 3 spearheads I can play spearhead with as well as around 1200 pts of both stormcast and skaven I can boost up to 2k to play full AoS fairly easily. Oh and I'm way more relaxed now.
That's a great way to put it! Also, I've played multiple TCGs and I approach it the same way. I know it can be just as expensive, but that is definitely not my style... :P. Three spearheads sounds perfect, you can always change up your play experience and it's great for converting friends into AoS fans XD
For $215 you could have gotten so many historicals box sets that you could have kitbashed and made into your own unique and much larger army than that started box set for cities of sigmar. If you're not playing exclusively in a GW store, you don't have to only use their minis to play warhammer.
You're right, but the GW sculpts really are the best IMO. For some units I agree with what you'd said. But the Ironweld Greatcannon, Pontifex Zenestra, and the Fusil Major on Ogor Warhulk (to name a few) are great examples of where you get something very unique and detailed. That being said, I think I'll try to save some money when I grab dwarves in the future.
I collect too many armies to risk calculating money spent...plus the other half's collections...and now our teen son too. Best to think of it as pay as you go entertainment and a creative outlet that keeps us focused and happy...plus the bonus family time together too.
Yes I think the journey is a really important part of the value. I absolutely love building and painting and when you look at dollar per hour spent on the hobby the value is there compared to a lot of other hobbies
My adventure with warhammer began with one box of Blood Angel Jump Pack Marines, using a gift card on amazon, and not needing anything at the time so figured I'd grab a model kit just for fun. "These look cool" and whats this warhammer thing! Shortly after finishing that kit I decided to look into this universe... 3 years later I sit with over 1750 models cluttering my home, and over $7,000 wasted on little plastic soldiers, paints/tools, books, etc. Multiple 2k armys for 40k, AOS, etc. Yet still to play a single full game... Problem isnt the cost to entry, its the hobby addiction that occurs and snowballs.
what you spend in the second year and any year after that is dependant on these things: do you start any new armies? (expensive but not as expesnive as your first year if it is only 1 army) are you going to get into the sub hobbies of the hobby (stuff like specifically being a super good painter and thus spending more on brushes and paint or getting an airbrush, or something like getting into 3d printing or making your own terrain and gaming board or buying books to read to dive deeper into the lore, and in my opinion a very fun thing is getting some older editions and stuff) are you going to get into other games (this is the most comparable when youre just starting out since you can only detract your hobby supplies for the most part but if its a skirmish game like underworlds or warcry you could spend very little or even nothing on it) and ofcourse best of all and this will happen if youre in the game for the long run, youre entire army getting refreshed which can result in you making your current army but with new minis, or you just buying the rules and getting on with life. (worse case scenario you get folded into another army such as what happened to the deathwatch in 40k or your army could cease existing like squats back in the early days of 40k) these are the factors for how mutch you end up spending in the hobby + how long you remain in it (tragically the hobby has a high turn over rate of people getting into it, then get out of it and often enough go back into it and for some this is a cycle) this might all come off as negative but I do mean it well, I personnally dont play AoS, have painted some of the models for fun but I still am a massive warhammer guy through and through
This is why purchasing a cheaper 3D printer off the bat is the best way to get into the hobby. I recommend the Elegoo mars series of printers as a great start and OPR is just $10 a month and you get to keep every new file they release that month and get 70% off everything in their store.

No its not its messy and most people do not really have space for it. You really need to dedicated a good amount of space for it and you should not sleep next to it like some people do.

@@mysidia troubleshooting is not that bad I got one, its the toxicity of the resin and you really need to ventilate. If you dont separate you will contaminate your whole place.. So many idiots on reddit etc is rising their health for miniatures.
Honestly I think you have done very well for yourself. For my first year I ended up spending around £4000. All the standard hobby gear similar to you but also a 3d printer and was and cure station which was £300. Then there was materials for that and a few monthly patreons each month and then there was a sale on files... I'm far more selective now compared to when I first started.
If I was someone with more self control it would have saved me a bunch. I think the material cost for printing something like a Bloodthirster came to around £6 plus the cost of the file which averages around £12 or £6 on a sale. You then don't need to buy the file again so the savings really shine when printing multiples of something. The problem is the fomo of patreon and sales on files combined with my own indecisiveness means I end up buying a bunch of files and then never print them because I move on to other projects. You also legally can't sell the models you print without a license so any pile of shame you create is kind of worthless. If I had a plastic pile of shame I would probably have sold half of it already. In general I have had great fun with it though and I don't regret buying it but if I could go back there are definitely things that I wouldn't have spent money on. If you're interested do research first as there are a bunch of health and safety things to bare in mind when handling chemicals and being around fumes. An alternative idea to look into for your dwarfs could be to look at Mantic's Kings of War range. They have proxys for the majority of the AoS Cities units and are very reasonably priced for how many you get.
I have always said that Warhammer is a hobby of investment with a pretty significant initial investment, but a pretty low maintenance. I mostly focus 40k so the numbers are a bit different, but this is what I usually math out (Prices in USD). Getting 3,000 points of 40k stuff to have flexability with list building, the paints and supplies needed to build them, and the rulebooks to play will cost you $2000-3000. That is a significant amount and no small step for somebody jumping straight into full 40k games. However the maintenance cost of the hobby after that is a kit or two a year and a set of books every 3 years, dropping the yearly cost to a few $100 spread out over 12 months. Now if I actually made myself stick to one army like my finances say I should...
I say this a lot, but warhammer isn't the most expensive hobby out there to get into. I've done various card games (WAY more expensive to keep up with a constantly evolving meta). Working on cars, wood working, metal working, etc are all more expensive. Most hobbies that people dive into are expensive. The nice thing about warhammer is if you have a little bit of restraint and only dive into one or two armies, you make your initial purchases to build up to like 3k points and then that's it. You can get your rules free online (skip battletomes if you only care about rules. wahapedia has your rules for free). You can spend like 1500-2000 bucks and that's the end of the expenses. You don't have to get the new foot hero that releases every edition, but even if you do it's a 30-40 dollar purchase once every 3 years. Sounds like a lot, but you'll spend more than that to build a good gaming pc and not even have games to go with it. If you're a console player then you're 500 bucks in the hole for the console and you have games that you're probably buying all the time. Warhammer is a good hobby to get into if you don't have issues with impulse control.
I just got into this a month ago and have gotten 5400 points of units already, some of that is stormcast from Skaventide that I won't use for a while. My biggest regret is the amount of paint that I bought though. I could've gotten by with half the paint and been fine. I also wish I would've magnetized my stormfiends and weapons teams (Skaven) but I didn't know about that until it was too late. Love my wet pallet that i made and love building/painting while watching a show with my wife. My brother just got into it as well and I'm excited to have weekly games.
I know you think your next year will be less expensive, but, your journey sounds very similar to mine and each year since has seen roughly doubling in spending till now. That being said, I was the first into the hobby and then got my brother, cousin, and brother-in-law into it by printing them units and armies. Also,.I do believe I've maxed out at yearly spending now and feel it slowing down as I have a 8K point space marine army now mostly painted and I don't feel too much pull to fill it out much more. I've reached critical mass and it feels good. I did keep track of spending each year and will continue to do so. I peaked out at about $4k CAD a year which is too much but I am slowing down. Appreciate the video man. Cheers.

Likely I'll buy another spearhead box and possible fill out my skaven or stormcast... In my defense, I'm moving house and my new town mainly plays AoS so it feels like I need to switch my focus a little! Currently I have 3000 points of deathguard 6000 points of dark angels 2600 points of votann 2600 points of drukhari + Skaventide I bought a fair amount of my models on facebook marketplace. I got some absolute stinking deals on Facebook, for 3k dark angels and 2k Tyranids I paid like £250.00. some of it needed stripping but it was a great start, I sold the nids for votann

But in this case I've given myself permission to make all these purchases, so I'm not worried for the future! lol, I started a few years ago. Totally new. Decided to go all in on 3 armies, so I could do a full OCD thing collecting. ..... Well, am all-in on 6 AoS armies, 5 40k armies (had almost zero interest in 40k when I started lol), have every single Warcry book and box, only missing the very very first box they did, all the lore books for AoS, tons of storage, game mats, insane amount of terrain, over 200 paints..... Yeeeeeeah. Buckle up sir, you're in for an expensive journey xD
My most expensive purchase was Skaventide and I’ve opened it… I haven’t started building or painting cause it takes me so long to paint any given model I’m still on my tau pathfinder kill team LOL But my plan is to go heads down and finish my kill team this week. I already picked out my SCE and Skaven paint schemes, so once I’m done with the kill team I’ll go pick which army to start first then buy some paints.
I’ve been collecting every Fantasy army since the summer before End Times started, and it’s been roughly $1-2000 a year bringing everything over 2000 points, then buying a unit here or there. The two player sets, old start collecting or vanguard/spearhead sets, and the Xmas battleforces go a long way in that effort if you aren’t going to go the 3D printer route (I have neither the time nor setup to safely do it. The technology has also come a LONG way in just the last three years, where it wasn’t cost effective) Craziest Purchase: I put down $650 for $1200, and $1400 for $2300 of figures. In both cases, I bought from overseas retailers. The first from a Polish company, because Poland didn’t pay GW’s “Overseas Tax” and the USD looked great compared to their local currency. The second, I placed a special order through a UK company just before a yearly GW price hike, then had them ship to a forwarding service who sent it to me. I think shipping was like $150, but considering I was getting 40% off what I’d buy locally, it was a steal.
Those are some BIG purchases, but like you said, in the long run, massive savings. That's why I ended up pulling the trigger on the Lumineth Battleforce that I found at a FLGS. Who knows when they'd sell out, but it's never coming back and the value is great.
Hi, nice video without filters on the $$$. I just went into the old world when it has been released 6 month ago. I had few standalone boxes last 10 years from GW like warhammer quest, dreadfleet etc. but I waited a long time that, maybe, GW decide to release a new wargame which takes place in the old fantasy world. I got a first bretonnian army (2000-2500 pts), which costed me a lot (450e) since I bought 80% brand new stuff. Then I bought many second hand Empire stuff to get another army "for later" (lol). I managed to get it for less than half I spent on the brets (180e, also for 2000pts). I was really enjoyable to sneak up good deals and rescue old minis. Finally I'm building my own table and I'm just planning to get few more 1000pts armies to introduce the game to non-warhammer-friends at home. All that money spent didn't boost my motivation to paint and I still have only 2 units painted on the first army... and I still haven't played the game with my minis. This hobby turns you into impulsive buyer. But I like the fact that GW stuff still hold its value on second hand market so you can just sell the excessive stuff you have and voilà.
Im new in Warhammer and ive been super lucky buying off the community. Spent $140 on a 2600 point Nighthaunt army, and spent $120 on 1500 point Space Marines. I have spent $100 on paints. Sure I will need to buy some units i will probably need to spend another $200 to optimise mostly the marines and then off that calculation 2 models for the Nighthaunt. That total is really not bad for 2 very playable armies that will last me very long. This hobby is still much cheaper than Magic the gathering which im def taking a break from buying stuff.
Also if you want physical rules that is cheaper than the core rule book get the General's Handbook. It has all the core rules and is in a really good binder style that's small yet easy to read. For about half the price.
I used Only Games for some ancillary units to go along with my Beastmen, I gotta say they treated me really well and their prints truly impressed me. Sorry to hear you didn't have the same experience.
It's difficult, because people have had fine experiences with them, but generally looking at their reviews, it seems most had similar experiences to me. They also have a very lame ticket system to try and get support and I think if they updated their customer service and didn't let people sit in silence then they would reduce their complaints by quite a bit.
By sheer coincidence, I've been in the hobby just about as long as you have. But thankfully, I've spent less money than you! I didn't keep track of everything, but I know I spent $300 on AoS models. For paints, brushes, and other tools, I'm probably close to another $200. As you touched on, if you keep it to one or two factions, you no longer need to buy new units at a certain point. But it's also important to consider how much you spend on other hobbies and how much you enjoy it. For me, I mostly watch TH-cam or play free video games or games that I bought years ago. So I don't spend a lot of money on myself normally. Also, painting is a really satisfying and peaceful experience that I haven't experienced in any other hobby. And at the end of it, I really enjoy the finished models that I've painted.
If i didn't do Cities or Lumineth, my expenditure would be a lot closer to yours, but that second army really adds to the cost with the models, books, paints, etc. I agree in regard to painting, I had no idea it would be so much fun and that I'd enjoy looking at my models as much as I do. I'm really glad to have started this hobby :)
I would say by biggest Warhammer Purchase has to eother be one of the many large expansions to my Stormcast army, my shopping bender when I was new, where I bought at least one kit from every shop within like. . . 30-50 miles of my home at the time in an effort to find the best shop in my area, or the purchasing if my Cities of Sigmar army, since I brought 2 copies of the Launh Box and at least 1 of every new kit that came after it. I am SO thankful that the local store I settled has/had a great rewards program that I took/take advantage of, as well as some amazing deal days. Otherwise you might struggle to believe I have a roof over my head if you saw my fully itemized list after I updated it.
I wish my local store had some kind of rewards program, that sounds amazing. There a lot of stores that give the discount, and some that don't. But I do not know of any rewards programs. What's the progress on your cities army?
@mysidia Yeah, I kinda lucked out there, especially because the best store happened to be the closest to me. As for my Cities army, I haven't made a lot of progress yet, I've only built 10 Steelhelms. But the reason I haven't made more progress with them yet is because I want to put alot of time and effort into them, kitbashing with my heroes and even making my own decals to use the livery I got commissioned for my custom City. The only issue there is that I need a new printer, and my family isn't ready to get one just yet.
Started tracking my expenses for Warhammer last July (Originally I started in February). I spent a total of 2.7k from July to December. But I have to admit I went quite hard last year :D
My spend is always dependant on what’s actually being released. Some months I’ll spend nothing, then others I’ll spend a fortune. It’s actually been a cheap few months for me, but earlier in the year I was spending almost £250 a month. I’d say my spend so far this year is knocking £1500.
@@mysidia ooo, that’s a fun question. Probably the Age of Sigmar 4th edition box. Not only is it a new game, it’s two new bunches of minis and another smaller game. I was always interested in Skaven, so I suspect they’ll become my next project (though I am excited by the new edition of Infinity).
Im currently printing Giants to play Age of Fantasy with, but to try and show some warhammer devotee's here that there are better AND cheaper options by making a Sons of Behemet army for spearhead, and honestly the Cast N Play Giants I am using look way way way better than the super over priced GW offerings.
Oh yeah the STL's cost $38.00 CAD, and the half bottle of Resin was about 10.00 CAD. Even if I factored in the price of my printer my army comes to 248.00 plus hobby costs. But my printer has already paid for itself. Why a wet pallet ? Do you wet blend ? Mini Handle ? Large Bottle Corks with Blu Tac work well and you can mount a ton at once...omg...
I bought myself a property to store all my warhammer in… it was a good investment. I have a 90m2 gaming/painting/work area.. 1500 for 1 year is nothing
Spearhead is truly the way to go, and I'm glad you got F&J box. You could already start playing games with the stuff you have right now, and you could just borrow/swap if you would like to try others. Hopefully the Spearhead experience would help you go all in on just the 1 bighammer army (and not go broke. lol) Cheers!
@@mysidia Gum up the center with your Steelhelms, preferably on a consecrated objective and keep your Marshall close to them. Pepper your enemies with the Cannon from the way-back and zoom around gathering objectives with the Cav before smashing the aforementioned gummed-up unit in the flanks to lift it via combined assault from the Marshall, 'Helms and Cav.
Still cheaper than gacha....... Also, I've had a bad experience on Etsy. Was trying to get a custom model printed for my FFXIV character to paint. The day my order was supposed to arrive one month after ordering, the guy messaged me to tell me he had a delay. I asked for a rough estimation on the time frame and he said a couple of weeks. A month later I messaged him and he said he was backed up on orders. I told him that I had noticed shortly after our last message, he took down everything in his store, so how was he behind? He continued to give me the run around for another month before I threated to just have Etsy refund me and he just refunded it himself. It was the one and only time I used that site....
Definitely cheaper than gacha. I'm sorry you had a bad experience on Etsy :( I think for Warhammer there are recommended sellers that the community has used and are a little more trustworthy.
Welp. If you’re trying to save money ya done messed up. You also messed up by getting into AoS. Shoulda got into 40k. Of course I say that while a Soulblight Gravelords Vanguard is on its way to my house. I had a pretty expensive mistake last month too. I got into Horus Heresy. That resin stuff ain’t cheap. I bought a white board yesterday to track my hobby projects. BUT all this IS keeping me away from the bar which is good. Hopefully I can finalize my 40k army for the tabletop within the next month so I can PLAY SOME GAMES!! Yesssss!! Good luck man. You have the right mindset. I’ve been collecting the same army over the course of 4 years now so I think I’m committed. Being careful is good. I’m not careful.

It's all relative. Teachers on average, for what they do, don’t get paid enough. You may be joking, but it didn’t come off that way. Also you gotta remember he didn’t buy all of this at once.
I own 9 armie between aos and 40k all at 2k some over 5k... main thing i learned. Buy second hand... fb market place, warpfire mini's, and local stores... buy second hand if you can... i got 3k in grey knight for like $600...

I don't know how much I've spent on GW models over many years but it's a lot. I got out of the hobby in 2022 and started collecting pokemon cards. Let me tell you, if you're interested in collecting full sets of cards it quickly becomes way more expensive than warhammer. And if you're also into playing the game while collecting then doubly so. I did that for about a year and it was honestly way less relaxing than collecting 40k. It felt like I was sprinting constantly to catch up to the "new set of cards" that was popping up every 2 months. I decided for the money I was spending it was more economical and more relaxing to just start collecting warhammer again, so that's what I did lol.
I now have around 2k black templars for 40k (including 2 3d printed landraiders) and recently got the skaventide box as well as the seraphon spearhead box giving me 3 spearheads I can play spearhead with as well as around 1200 pts of both stormcast and skaven I can boost up to 2k to play full AoS fairly easily. Oh and I'm way more relaxed now.
That's a great way to put it! Also, I've played multiple TCGs and I approach it the same way. I know it can be just as expensive, but that is definitely not my style... :P. Three spearheads sounds perfect, you can always change up your play experience and it's great for converting friends into AoS fans XD

For $215 you could have gotten so many historicals box sets that you could have kitbashed and made into your own unique and much larger army than that started box set for cities of sigmar. If you're not playing exclusively in a GW store, you don't have to only use their minis to play warhammer.
You're right, but the GW sculpts really are the best IMO. For some units I agree with what you'd said. But the Ironweld Greatcannon, Pontifex Zenestra, and the Fusil Major on Ogor Warhulk (to name a few) are great examples of where you get something very unique and detailed. That being said, I think I'll try to save some money when I grab dwarves in the future.
I collect too many armies to risk calculating money spent...plus the other half's collections...and now our teen son too. Best to think of it as pay as you go entertainment and a creative outlet that keeps us focused and happy...plus the bonus family time together too.
Yes I think the journey is a really important part of the value. I absolutely love building and painting and when you look at dollar per hour spent on the hobby the value is there compared to a lot of other hobbies
My adventure with warhammer began with one box of Blood Angel Jump Pack Marines, using a gift card on amazon, and not needing anything at the time so figured I'd grab a model kit just for fun. "These look cool" and whats this warhammer thing! Shortly after finishing that kit I decided to look into this universe... 3 years later I sit with over 1750 models cluttering my home, and over $7,000 wasted on little plastic soldiers, paints/tools, books, etc. Multiple 2k armys for 40k, AOS, etc. Yet still to play a single full game... Problem isnt the cost to entry, its the hobby addiction that occurs and snowballs.
what you spend in the second year and any year after that is dependant on these things:
do you start any new armies? (expensive but not as expesnive as your first year if it is only 1 army)
are you going to get into the sub hobbies of the hobby (stuff like specifically being a super good painter and thus spending more on brushes and paint or getting an airbrush, or something like getting into 3d printing or making your own terrain and gaming board or buying books to read to dive deeper into the lore, and in my opinion a very fun thing is getting some older editions and stuff)
are you going to get into other games (this is the most comparable when youre just starting out since you can only detract your hobby supplies for the most part but if its a skirmish game like underworlds or warcry you could spend very little or even nothing on it)
and ofcourse best of all and this will happen if youre in the game for the long run, youre entire army getting refreshed which can result in you making your current army but with new minis, or you just buying the rules and getting on with life. (worse case scenario you get folded into another army such as what happened to the deathwatch in 40k or your army could cease existing like squats back in the early days of 40k)
these are the factors for how mutch you end up spending in the hobby + how long you remain in it (tragically the hobby has a high turn over rate of people getting into it, then get out of it and often enough go back into it and for some this is a cycle)
this might all come off as negative but I do mean it well, I personnally dont play AoS, have painted some of the models for fun but I still am a massive warhammer guy through and through
This is why purchasing a cheaper 3D printer off the bat is the best way to get into the hobby. I recommend the Elegoo mars series of printers as a great start and OPR is just $10 a month and you get to keep every new file they release that month and get 70% off everything in their store.

No its not its messy and most people do not really have space for it. You really need to dedicated a good amount of space for it and you should not sleep next to it like some people do.

@@mysidia troubleshooting is not that bad I got one, its the toxicity of the resin and you really need to ventilate. If you dont separate you will contaminate your whole place.. So many idiots on reddit etc is rising their health for miniatures.

Honestly I think you have done very well for yourself. For my first year I ended up spending around £4000. All the standard hobby gear similar to you but also a 3d printer and was and cure station which was £300. Then there was materials for that and a few monthly patreons each month and then there was a sale on files...
I'm far more selective now compared to when I first started.
Sounds like a 3D printer is a really good investment, that's so rad. How much money do you think it's saved you now?
If I was someone with more self control it would have saved me a bunch. I think the material cost for printing something like a Bloodthirster came to around £6 plus the cost of the file which averages around £12 or £6 on a sale. You then don't need to buy the file again so the savings really shine when printing multiples of something. The problem is the fomo of patreon and sales on files combined with my own indecisiveness means I end up buying a bunch of files and then never print them because I move on to other projects. You also legally can't sell the models you print without a license so any pile of shame you create is kind of worthless. If I had a plastic pile of shame I would probably have sold half of it already. In general I have had great fun with it though and I don't regret buying it but if I could go back there are definitely things that I wouldn't have spent money on. If you're interested do research first as there are a bunch of health and safety things to bare in mind when handling chemicals and being around fumes. An alternative idea to look into for your dwarfs could be to look at Mantic's Kings of War range. They have proxys for the majority of the AoS Cities units and are very reasonably priced for how many you get.

I have always said that Warhammer is a hobby of investment with a pretty significant initial investment, but a pretty low maintenance. I mostly focus 40k so the numbers are a bit different, but this is what I usually math out (Prices in USD).
Getting 3,000 points of 40k stuff to have flexability with list building, the paints and supplies needed to build them, and the rulebooks to play will cost you $2000-3000. That is a significant amount and no small step for somebody jumping straight into full 40k games. However the maintenance cost of the hobby after that is a kit or two a year and a set of books every 3 years, dropping the yearly cost to a few $100 spread out over 12 months.
Now if I actually made myself stick to one army like my finances say I should...

I say this a lot, but warhammer isn't the most expensive hobby out there to get into. I've done various card games (WAY more expensive to keep up with a constantly evolving meta). Working on cars, wood working, metal working, etc are all more expensive. Most hobbies that people dive into are expensive. The nice thing about warhammer is if you have a little bit of restraint and only dive into one or two armies, you make your initial purchases to build up to like 3k points and then that's it. You can get your rules free online (skip battletomes if you only care about rules. wahapedia has your rules for free). You can spend like 1500-2000 bucks and that's the end of the expenses. You don't have to get the new foot hero that releases every edition, but even if you do it's a 30-40 dollar purchase once every 3 years. Sounds like a lot, but you'll spend more than that to build a good gaming pc and not even have games to go with it. If you're a console player then you're 500 bucks in the hole for the console and you have games that you're probably buying all the time. Warhammer is a good hobby to get into if you don't have issues with impulse control.

I just got into this a month ago and have gotten 5400 points of units already, some of that is stormcast from Skaventide that I won't use for a while. My biggest regret is the amount of paint that I bought though. I could've gotten by with half the paint and been fine. I also wish I would've magnetized my stormfiends and weapons teams (Skaven) but I didn't know about that until it was too late. Love my wet pallet that i made and love building/painting while watching a show with my wife. My brother just got into it as well and I'm excited to have weekly games.
I know you think your next year will be less expensive, but, your journey sounds very similar to mine and each year since has seen roughly doubling in spending till now. That being said, I was the first into the hobby and then got my brother, cousin, and brother-in-law into it by printing them units and armies. Also,.I do believe I've maxed out at yearly spending now and feel it slowing down as I have a 8K point space marine army now mostly painted and I don't feel too much pull to fill it out much more. I've reached critical mass and it feels good. I did keep track of spending each year and will continue to do so. I peaked out at about $4k CAD a year which is too much but I am slowing down. lol, I started a few years ago. Totally new. Decided to go all in on 3 armies, so I could do a full OCD thing collecting. ..... Well, am all-in on 6 AoS armies, 5 40k armies (had almost zero interest in 40k when I started lol), have every single Warcry book and box, only missing the very very first box they did, all the lore books for AoS, tons of storage, game mats, insane amount of terrain, over 200 paints..... Yeeeeeeah. Buckle up sir, you're in for an expensive journey xD
My most expensive purchase was Skaventide and I’ve opened it… I haven’t started building or painting cause it takes me so long to paint any given model I’m still on my tau pathfinder kill team LOL
But my plan is to go heads down and finish my kill team this week. I already picked out my SCE and Skaven paint schemes, so once I’m done with the kill team I’ll go pick which army to start first then buy some paints.

I’ve been collecting every Fantasy army since the summer before End Times started, and it’s been roughly $1-2000 a year bringing everything over 2000 points, then buying a unit here or there. The two player sets, old start collecting or vanguard/spearhead sets, and the Xmas battleforces go a long way in that effort if you aren’t going to go the 3D printer route (I have neither the time nor setup to safely do it. The technology has also come a LONG way in just the last three years, where it wasn’t cost effective)
Craziest Purchase: I put down $650 for $1200, and $1400 for $2300 of figures. In both cases, I bought from overseas retailers. The first from a Polish company, because Poland didn’t pay GW’s “Overseas Tax” and the USD looked great compared to their local currency. The second, I placed a special order through a UK company just before a yearly GW price hike, then had them ship to a forwarding service who sent it to me. I think shipping was like $150, but considering I was getting 40% off what I’d buy locally, it was a steal.
Those are some BIG purchases, but like you said, in the long run, massive savings. That's why I ended up pulling the trigger on the Lumineth Battleforce that I found at a FLGS. Who knows when they'd sell out, but it's never coming back and the value is great.

I just went into the old world when it has been released 6 month ago. I had few standalone boxes last 10 years from GW like warhammer quest, dreadfleet etc. but I waited a long time that, maybe, GW decide to release a new wargame which takes place in the old fantasy world.
I got a first bretonnian army (2000-2500 pts), which costed me a lot (450e) since I bought 80% brand new stuff.
Then I bought many second hand Empire stuff to get another army "for later" (lol). I managed to get it for less than half I spent on the brets (180e, also for 2000pts). I was really enjoyable to sneak up good deals and rescue old minis.
Finally I'm building my own table and I'm just planning to get few more 1000pts armies to introduce the game to non-warhammer-friends at home.
All that money spent didn't boost my motivation to paint and I still have only 2 units painted on the first army... and I still haven't played the game with my minis. This hobby turns you into impulsive buyer.
But I like the fact that GW stuff still hold its value on second hand market so you can just sell the excessive stuff you have and voilà.
Im new in Warhammer and ive been super lucky buying off the community. Spent $140 on a 2600 point Nighthaunt army, and spent $120 on 1500 point Space Marines. I have spent $100 on paints.
Sure I will need to buy some units i will probably need to spend another $200 to optimise mostly the marines and then off that calculation 2 models for the Nighthaunt.
That total is really not bad for 2 very playable armies that will last me very long.
This hobby is still much cheaper than Magic the gathering which im def taking a break from buying stuff.
I play MTG as well and I'd say its significantly cheaper than Warhammer. The deals you got for those models is frankly insane 😅
Also if you want physical rules that is cheaper than the core rule book get the General's Handbook. It has all the core rules and is in a really good binder style that's small yet easy to read. For about half the price.

I used Only Games for some ancillary units to go along with my Beastmen, I gotta say they treated me really well and their prints truly impressed me. Sorry to hear you didn't have the same experience.
It's difficult, because people have had fine experiences with them, but generally looking at their reviews, it seems most had similar experiences to me. They also have a very lame ticket system to try and get support and I think if they updated their customer service and didn't let people sit in silence then they would reduce their complaints by quite a bit.

By sheer coincidence, I've been in the hobby just about as long as you have. But thankfully, I've spent less money than you! I didn't keep track of everything, but I know I spent $300 on AoS models. For paints, brushes, and other tools, I'm probably close to another $200.
As you touched on, if you keep it to one or two factions, you no longer need to buy new units at a certain point. But it's also important to consider how much you spend on other hobbies and how much you enjoy it. For me, I mostly watch TH-cam or play free video games or games that I bought years ago. So I don't spend a lot of money on myself normally. Also, painting is a really satisfying and peaceful experience that I haven't experienced in any other hobby. And at the end of it, I really enjoy the finished models that I've painted.
If i didn't do Cities or Lumineth, my expenditure would be a lot closer to yours, but that second army really adds to the cost with the models, books, paints, etc. I agree in regard to painting, I had no idea it would be so much fun and that I'd enjoy looking at my models as much as I do. I'm really glad to have started this hobby :)
I got out of Warhammer/tabletop gaming in the last month or so… sold everything on eBay, and turned out a nice, tidy profit. 😉

I would say by biggest Warhammer Purchase has to eother be one of the many large expansions to my Stormcast army, my shopping bender when I was new, where I bought at least one kit from every shop within like. . . 30-50 miles of my home at the time in an effort to find the best shop in my area, or the purchasing if my Cities of Sigmar army, since I brought 2 copies of the Launh Box and at least 1 of every new kit that came after it. I am SO thankful that the local store I settled has/had a great rewards program that I took/take advantage of, as well as some amazing deal days. Otherwise you might struggle to believe I have a roof over my head if you saw my fully itemized list after I updated it.
I wish my local store had some kind of rewards program, that sounds amazing. There a lot of stores that give the discount, and some that don't. But I do not know of any rewards programs. What's the progress on your cities army?
@mysidia Yeah, I kinda lucked out there, especially because the best store happened to be the closest to me. As for my Cities army, I haven't made a lot of progress yet, I've only built 10 Steelhelms. But the reason I haven't made more progress with them yet is because I want to put alot of time and effort into them, kitbashing with my heroes and even making my own decals to use the livery I got commissioned for my custom City. The only issue there is that I need a new printer, and my family isn't ready to get one just yet.
Started tracking my expenses for Warhammer last July (Originally I started in February). I spent a total of 2.7k from July to December. But I have to admit I went quite hard last year :D

My spend is always dependant on what’s actually being released. Some months I’ll spend nothing, then others I’ll spend a fortune. It’s actually been a cheap few months for me, but earlier in the year I was spending almost £250 a month. I’d say my spend so far this year is knocking £1500.

@@mysidia ooo, that’s a fun question. Probably the Age of Sigmar 4th edition box. Not only is it a new game, it’s two new bunches of minis and another smaller game. I was always interested in Skaven, so I suspect they’ll become my next project (though I am excited by the new edition of Infinity).
I would highly recommend that you invest in a paint shaker as it will save you a ton in paint costs
Im currently printing Giants to play Age of Fantasy with, but to try and show some warhammer devotee's here that there are better AND cheaper options by making a Sons of Behemet army for spearhead, and honestly the Cast N Play Giants I am using look way way way better than the super over priced GW offerings.
Oh yeah the STL's cost $38.00 CAD, and the half bottle of Resin was about 10.00 CAD. Even if I factored in the price of my printer my army comes to 248.00 plus hobby costs. But my printer has already paid for itself. Why a wet pallet ? Do you wet blend ? Mini Handle ? Large Bottle Corks with Blu Tac work well and you can mount a ton at once...omg...
Be super careful with that varnish spray if you decide to use it. Test first for sure. I ruined several miniatures with it.

Spearhead is truly the way to go, and I'm glad you got F&J box. You could already start playing games with the stuff you have right now, and you could just borrow/swap if you would like to try others. Hopefully the Spearhead experience would help you go all in on just the 1 bighammer army (and not go broke. lol) Cheers!
I really like Spearhead but I will say the Cities of Sigmar spearhead just seems quite weak. I have yet to win a game with it.
@@mysidia Gum up the center with your Steelhelms, preferably on a consecrated objective and keep your Marshall close to them. Pepper your enemies with the Cannon from the way-back and zoom around gathering objectives with the Cav before smashing the aforementioned gummed-up unit in the flanks to lift it via combined assault from the Marshall, 'Helms and Cav.

Also, I've had a bad experience on Etsy. Was trying to get a custom model printed for my FFXIV character to paint. The day my order was supposed to arrive one month after ordering, the guy messaged me to tell me he had a delay. I asked for a rough estimation on the time frame and he said a couple of weeks. A month later I messaged him and he said he was backed up on orders. I told him that I had noticed shortly after our last message, he took down everything in his store, so how was he behind? He continued to give me the run around for another month before I threated to just have Etsy refund me and he just refunded it himself. It was the one and only time I used that site....
Definitely cheaper than gacha. I'm sorry you had a bad experience on Etsy :( I think for Warhammer there are recommended sellers that the community has used and are a little more trustworthy.

I didn't buy STL files, the site prints the miniatures for you and ships them to you.

I own 9 armie between aos and 40k all at 2k some over 5k... main thing i learned. Buy second hand... fb market place, warpfire mini's, and local stores... buy second hand if you can... i got 3k in grey knight for like $600...
YOU CAN repaint and repair models pretty easy... don't be scared to use old metal models aswell....
