    As a CMA for over 10years I am proud of that title. But it is illegal to identify yourself as a nurse when you are not.

      It is illegal....and in many states it is a FELONY to refer to yourself as a nurse if you are not an RN or LVN

      I ready a very negative reddit post about how a CMA was annoyed at another CMA for calling herself a nurse! She put on her FB that she was a nurse/medical assistant and people addressed her as a nurse! 😰😰
      Then all these other peoppe responded to the post and said they've seen the samething, even to the extent where the CMA says they are a nurse when taking phone calls 😐😐😐😐😐 OMG

      lark It’s the same fucking shit, MA’s eventually learn the same skills RN’s know. Same thing bs and waste of all that schooling.

    Where nurses can work (under their own license): medical/surgical unit, PACU, OR, medical office (any speciality), dialysis center, ICU, trauma unit, trauma ICU, private duty, NICU, PICU, surgery center, home health, pediatrics, nursing home, assisted living, at home doing insurance stuff, ER, labor and delivery, inpatient psychiatric unit, PCU, pharmacy, CCU, travel nursing, informatics nurse, nursing instructor/educator, and many more.
    They can become charge nurses, ADONs, and DONs. There are also many extra certifications, for ex there is one that allows nurses to insert PICC lines.
    With further education, they can become: Certified registered nurse anesthetist, midwife, first assist!!, nurse practitioner (any specialty), and probably more I can't think of right now.
    Nurses can do everything a medical assistant can do plus so much more.
    You can get a diploma in nursing, associates, batchlors, masters, and doctoriate.
    Nurses go through extensive schooling.
    It is competitive to even get into nursing school.
    Nurses do a LOT of critical thinking, and can not just depend on the doctor.
    Nurses have a huge responsibly.
    Nurses can do invasive, sterile procedures under their own license as well as administrator blood products.

    I am a nurse that works in a clinic, side by side with CMA's. Day to day, our roles and responsibilities are very similar. I must say coming from a hospital setting I am impressed with knowledge of my coworkers.

      @damianooi8261 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      what do you mean by impressed with knowledge of your coworkers? i have a friend who is a nurse for several years. She told me to go for MA instead of Nursing program when i am interested in nursing program coz MA worked closer to physicians than nurses to doctors. According to her, she even said MA have more skills than Nurses including minor surgeries.... is it true?

    • @coffeepandacat
      @coffeepandacat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah they need to revisit how they pay MAs. Especially those who go for the associate degrees. It's evil to go to school for 2 years only to be paid $12 per/hour. Should be at least $18 with potential to get raises.

You can do the same as a medical assistant. I respect your role as a medical assistant...but don’t ever claim you are a nurse unless you have the legal right to do so.

    I am a BSN nurse. All that she mentioned that CMA can do, nurses can do as well but broader especially if we get the certain certification with our license or sometimes no need for certification. I love working with CMA tho. Nurses like help they can get :) Stating you are a nurse can ruin your career tho, it would be called fraud. I do understand it takes so much time to explain job description as a CMA but stating otherwise from ur job title would still be fraud.

    I don't think it is meaningful to argue about which one is more important or more professional between nurse and MA. I was a project coordinator ( and now a project manager). Sometimes I was challenged by the engineers in my team because I can not write code and develop software or do tests.However, I am a bridge between every position. Without engineers, I can not do anything of my project. Without me, engineers can not work efficiently or may get exhausted for working uncoordinated and finally cause the failure of the project. We are a team and coworkers.We need each other and respect each other as well. I believe it is the same between nurse and MA, isn't it?

    I'm glad you spoke on this topic because this is been a very big issue at my work now that we just celebrated nurses week last week. I've been a CMA for over 10 years. I work side by side with LPN, we happen to have same job role/duties in my office. We both work under the direction of a physician. I have to say though I did feel a little bummed that no recognition was given during nurses week ( they gifted nursing staff)... we don't celebrate medical assistant week, and my job and on our company website lists every other professional in our practice except for the little old medical assistant... me. I know I sound bitter but it is a little exhausting when you have a lot of job duties and responsibilities but no recognition at all for all you do :(

    • @MandatheCMA
      @MandatheCMA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Megan Lombardi I completely understand and I think that you have every right to feel that way. Luckily, my clinic considers the RNs, LPNs and CMAs as part of the nursing staff as a whole, even though our recognition week is not until October. We can do almost everything that they do on the clinical side. Looking at us in scrubs, and seeing what we do through patient's eyes - they can't tell a difference. We can definitely be treated like the little 'ol Medical Assistant, even though we are almost equal. It can make us feel worthless.
      Thank you so much for posting this comment. I hope it brings more light to this subject for the viewers and subscribers!

      I am sorry that MAs are not always celebrated during nurses week. IMO, anyone that does "nursing" for a living, and that includes many of the skills an MA performs, should get recognition. I feel the same about a CNA, those are also nursing skills.

    • @jennas1508
      @jennas1508 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Megan Lombardi very true and this is why LPN is phasing out and not the route to take because LPN vs RN is a huge difference and LPNs are just glorified MAs.

    Why is it that so many CNA/STNA'S give RN's a hard time when we instruct? We have many important reasons for doing so. Most of the time I find that these STNA'S can't see the big picture but yet they want to run the show!! I am not putting my patients or my license on the line because they think they know!!

    Everyone working in a health care setting is vital and has an important role to play, even housekeeping and cooks. One thing I must add though, duties such as medication administration, vital signs, care plans and IV’s take one hour to learn. The skill sets more specific to RN’s are assessments, initiating interventions, critical thinking and caring for unstable patients. People talk down to us too, they assume all we do is take vital signs and give injections. People have NO idea what a job entails until they have gone through the training and have worked in the field.

    The CMA (AAMA) Credential is becoming the gold standard in Medical Assisting. Use to if someone wanted to become a MA they could get on the job training, but here in Kentucky (Pike County) employers ONLY hire Credientaled employees...which is a fabulous step in the right direction for all MA's🙏. I have been a CNA for a number of years now so I am ready to step up my game. However, I have heard and read that getting a job as a Medical Assistant is difficult; Therefore, I second-guess going to MA school, having thousands of dollars in debt to pay back, then never even being able to land a job with the certification I earned. In your experience, do you see this as being accurate or inaccurate?

      continuing on to different fields is pretty easy. General classes should transfer (which you are going to have if you are getting an AAS in medical assisting, diploma classes do not have this requirement) since you already have an associates, it's easy to get an associates or higher in a different subject (such as an AAS in nursing or BSN if that's what you are interested in)

    Im not sure if you are still practicing or not but im just wondering why no one ever talks about the attack on your life when you become and MA. Its like people watch and wait for you to succeed then try to introduce you to people that end up ruining your life. I have honestly just been in hiding lately. I became a medical assistant thinking that I would have a real chance to finally be able to take care of myself but it has been an ongoing battle. I have always kept my work separate from my personal life while there are those that try to get me to blend them together. You did share about your relationship struggles but without getting into details, did your success as a medical assistant cause stress in your relationships. (personal, family, friends, acquaintences, etc)

    Experiences make all the difference. But thank you!! Many forget their scope of practice!! CNA's thinking they can tell a nurse what to do and how to do their job. Then wonder why they aren't "respected". But again, the title behind one's name does not make anyone a genuis!

    I'm interested in both CNA and MA programs at my college. I'm kind of an anxious mess though bc I'm thinking about making mistakes even before the program starts but I'm sure I will practice a lot in the program. I am interested in behavioral and mental health and possibly special needs patients as those are dear to my heart. Being an MA for a behavioral health private practice or clinic would be awesome.

    I am not from US and this proffession do not exist where I live. We have practical "nurses" they go to school for 2 years or 3 years for older teenagers. With internship periods. And they need extra license to count and give medicine. And then nurses that takes 4 years bachelor degree. To be a doctor takes 5 years+ that is Masters degree.

    Good video, but you are really under playing the nursing role in the medical field. To my understanding in California, a RN student can work as a medical assistant after there first semester in nursing school. So that points in prospective the point you are trying to make.

    Hi Manda. I took my test through the AMT, not the AAMA organization. AMT told me these two organizations are both accredited the same, they are just different organizations! Well, if someone asks me if I am a Certified Medical Assistant, do I say yes? It's so confusing for me.

    • @MandatheCMA
      @MandatheCMA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Seanna Foreman nope! You're an RMA! They are very correct in saying they are literally the same thing, but since they are different organizations the AMT can only deem you as an RMA, and the AAMA can only deem their medical assistants as CMAs. Think of it like this: you take your driver's license test in Montana. You get a Montana drivers license. You wouldn't say that you have a Minnesota drivers license because Minnesota didn't give you your license. They're the same thing, it's just different states. If someone asks if you are certified I would say "actually I'm a Registered Medical Assistant. It's basically the same thing, but it's a different credentialing agency".
      Hope that makes sense!

      @seannaforeman491 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I never fully understood why CMAs call themselves nurses. To an extent I do, it’s easier to explain, as a lot of the general population doesn’t quite understand what CMA stands for. But we go to school and EARN our title so we should be proud of that. We are still a vital component of the healthcare sector. I start CMA class in August and I cannot wait to start and then pass my NHA exam.

    A nurse is anyone in direct patient care. A registered nurse is as different from a licensed practical nurse as l.p.n is from medical assitants. It is the level of education and scope of practice. A "nurse" can be a family member with no formal training. The problem with the NURSE title is that there are distinctions based on the level of training and licensure. A CMA is an office based caregiver that is certified. A LPN/LVN/ RN all have advanced training and are licensed.

      I suppose the only thing I could suggest is to find a pediatrics clinic! The second best is to try OBGYN. You may not get to work with the babies directly, but when you become a nurse you can work Labor and Delivery, Postpartum and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Those three are usually intertwined in the hospital. I hope that helps some!

    • @MandatheCMA
      @MandatheCMA  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They need to be trained as a CNA to enroll in nursing school, however there are things that nurses do not learn that medical assistants learn. Especially since nurses do not do the administrative side of medical assisting. Most nurses are not even trained on blood draws these days because they are more geared towards hospitals and hospice - which is what their clinical rotations consist of. As mentioned, Medical Assistants already know anything that needs to keep a clinic functioning, whereas nurses are not trained in school for all aspects of the clinic, and they would need to back to school to learn the administrative side especially.

      As a graduated Nurse I've learned to do everything you listed as a MA, I have to do it all for 3-5 years to even be considered a competent nurse.
      You don't have to be a CNA to enroll, it does help to have that experience, I think you become a much better nurse.
      All nurses are trained in IV's, you can't be a nurse if you don't know how to start, stop or continue IV's, I wonder what kind of crappy nurses you have to deal with lol
      There are several other things I would disagree with but I doubt it matters, it's all one sided.
      You will be able to tell more about the differences when you go through the nursing program, which you absolutely should do. You'd probably do really well

    • @Jannellbathbabe

    • @NurseMK
      @NurseMK 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Manda the CMA Not true at all. I have successfully completed and passed IV certification, blood draws, injection administration, med passed etc while in nursing school.
      I have had numerous clinical hours at various locations including the hospital for mother/baby, med surg, orthopedics, the heart center, a mental health facility etc I’ve even had clinicals in some doctors offices.
      I did not have to be a CNA in order to apply to nursing school or to be accepted. The only requirements were to have completed all pre-req classes and have a specific GPA and score a certain score on the TEAS.
      Things I can do that a CMA can’t:
      Careplans, I can tritate IV’s, I can care for patients on vents or with trachs, I can admin meds via peg tube, perform wound care, feed pts with a ng tube etc.
      While CMAs are great and a vital member in healthcare, they can not be compared to a nurse pass their basic skills to collect vitals, give injections and do basic charting.
      A nurses role is more in depth and our training/education is as well, and no, not all nurses work in hospice or LTC. Nurses have the opportunity to work in various healthcare settings, whereas, CMA’s are limited strictly to medical offices.
      Also, want to put out there while CMA’s do learn a lot, nurses have to learn more. The front office aspect of it is specifically for CMA training. Nurses work directly with patients at all times. CMAs do not and many have minimal patient contact when working in the front office.
      While I love and respect CMA’s, I do not think it’s right or fair to compare them to nurses. Both have very amazing and important roles in healthcare, but both are very different.

After doing so and getting my certification I worked as an Orthopaedic CCMA for a few years and chose to finish more schooling. I see a great deal of comments regarding skills and nursing vs MA. Skills can be learned by anyone, I taught laypeople basic IV and wound care skills to care for their loved ones in the home. The primary difference between an unlicensed assistive personnel and a Registered Nurse is the ability to have and legally practice clinical judgement. That clinical judgement is what creates liability, poor clinical judgement can get you sued. It is fairly typical for people in lower level assistive positions to not understand this because they simply have not done it, again, they tend to focus heavily on those skills "That nurse can't even draw blood!" But it is not an individual skill that makes a nurse. I guess the best example I have of this is that a UAP does not have the legal, or likely educational ability to perform clinical health assessments and make decisions based upon those findings. Hopefully that makes sense, but that, is the primary difference between an RN and to a some degree an LVN and a UAP (certifications are not licensure, a certification holds you to far less legal responsibility in the medical field). The skills are easy ultimately, all nurses and UAPs have skills that they do and don't practice frequently based on their work environment, many of those skills are even administrativein nature, that does not define the job. It is the difference in a professional vs non professional position (not saying MAs don't behave in a professional manner) , but a professional nurse practices independently under a license, is governed be a board for professional behavior, and makes clinical decisions based on patient presentation that someone's life depends on, in my case, nearly every day. A good MA is worth their weight in gold, but I need a good MA to listen carefully to what I tell them about a patient and very promptly and clearly communicate it to the doc, and, if need be, get back to me on what the doc wants done. Communication, in my opinion, makes or breaks you as an MA, but it is my decision as an RN about when we call a doc and what we communicate to them. I have to know, based some on my education, but even more based on my experiences, what is urgent and what isn't. If a patients labs are doing X, we are next likely to see Y. Did I hear fluid in the lungs that is likely cardiac or pulmonary in nature? And no book can truly teach you that, it is the art of professional nursing.

      I am transitioning from being a mechanic and enrolling to learn to be a CNA after that who knows? I understand there are different hard skills required in medical care depending whether you are a doctor, RN, LPN, CNA, or an MA.
      Something that I don't understand is the utter lack of soft skill demonstrated by a few people when it comes to emotional intelligence is insane!
      Now I understand why my friend who has been an RN for over 10 years says "one of the most important lessons you learn is have thick skin!"
      I am in reminded of piece of advice given to me as a young soldier just before being promoted to Corporal by a Sergeant Major, "I don't care what your rank is never forget your roots, when you give people orders always treat them with respect and never belittle them."

      After reading this long and ridiculous post from Mrs Kaa I do not think I can be bothered to even watch this channel anymore. Each and every person that holds a job is a professional as long as they are working as one, license or certification or just good old experience. I know way to many RN's that should have never graduated high school much less be treating patients and to tell me EVER that I would need to listen to one is hilarious especially when my doctor depends on me to handle OUR patients and the RN who has worked for us for over 2 years does not have a clue what I do and although after 2 years she still does not know the proper way to spin our blood( yes she is supposed because she works there its part of her PROFESSIONAL job) nor does she even know how to perform an EKG ( I do not know a nurse nor a doctor no matter how long it has been since they have done one) that did not know what especially after they were shown the day before. SO, ummm no it is not her decision EVER when it comes to ANYTHING to do with my patients or who or when to call the doctor. I would say it is all in how well you are educated in not only a book but what you have learned in your career can speak volumes and I can tell you that if you do not keep your mouth shut and your ears open and listen to your doctor(hopefully you have smart ones) you many never learn anything but what was written in a book which I can tell you will never make anyone where a good RN, BSN, FN_P, PA-C, MA, CMA or RMA..so sorry I cannot keep watching your videos Manda...Great job in your journey keep up your awesome attitude and most of all do not let anything hold you back realize there is probably so much more out there you can learn and do with your medical assisting that you really even know!!! ;)

      Yes. I've been a LPN for 5 years now, and before that a MA. LPNs do most their work in nursing homes or home health. What LPNS that MAs cant do in my state are administer meds, do procedures (IVs, foley caths, feeding tubes, ect). Also the pay rate is way way better for a nurse.

    • @EliPlaysTheSims
      @EliPlaysTheSims 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      As Mike stated, the pay difference for a CMA and an LPN is quite different. I am an LPN and I work alongside two CMAs. We generally have the same responsibilities (in my clinic in particular they hire CMAs and LPNs to do patient care and triage) however the CMAs typically make 4-6 dollars less per hour. Again, this is specifically from experience from my place of employment.

I could and my post right there but I'm not going to for more reasons then I can count so I'm just going to keep it simple Engineers are very important for their particular role the same goes for the drafter, however takes a blue collar worker to actually build the structure. They really are not comparable positions. Anyone who has doubt needs to check the pay difference between an RN and a MA. They are not interchagable careers in any way. A MA is an unlicensed assistive personnel, they hold a certification typically (in some states not necessary) but they work under a physician assisting them. A nurse works under her own license and liability based on her scope of practice.

    A 15 year medical assistant job won't compare to a new nurse with 1 year experience.
    Please understand your chain of command in the healthcare field.
