      MrTommo2304 I got a few video ideas for you. I love the idea of bankai theory videos for characters that we didn’t get to see like ukitake and isshin. Doing a rewrite series for bleach would be awesome I’d love to see how you would put your spin on parts of bleach that left more to be desired for example the Royal Guard versus yhwach and his elite guard. Last off a all bankai ranking video so I loved the top 10 bankai video but I’d love to see where u would rank the rest of them. I think it would be cool if you rank all the other bankai and just end it at 11 and ask the viewer to watch the top ten bankai video to finish it off

      My biggest question is what would happen if more people were involved? There’s a limited number of characters within the story but they say if he activates it and pulls like 50 people in who plays what? Or would the story itself be fundamentally changed to accommodate it

    Kyoraku's zanpakuto is a double entendre on the word "Play". "Play" in regards to how a child interprets that word, and "Play" in regards to how an adult interprets that word. Children interpret it as a game, which is displayed in his shikai. Adults interpret it as a theatrical performance/story which is displayed in his bankai. Both were also monumental turning point in his life where he was force to grow up mentally after his brother's death

    Hear my theory,
    I think, Kyoraku's bankai is not just limited to one story. His shikai is to make all Japanese childrens' games into deadly games and his bankai supposed to make theatre PLAYS into reality. He has actually multiple plays with multiple acts. But he can only choose one play for each situation, that's why he can't use another play in his fight with lille barro because only one play can come into reality per bankai release. He chose to play the lover's story because that play suites the situation with lille barro being invincible to physical attacks. He can, in diffrent circumstances and situations, choose another play. And all theatre plays are deadly.
    For me, that'd be cool and fantastic to imagine.

    My interpretation was that the man beat the woman so badly one time that he killed her and the whole play is him living with the regret and Shunsui is the ghost of the woman leading him along the stages of grief and regret.. pain and shock (act 1) then feeling painfully ill (act 2) then drowning in immense depression (act 3) and finally commiting suicide by hanging himself (act 4)

      I like that. I just didn't agree with the reasoning behind it. I know it exists because of how things are told in the series, but I hate the idea of a Bankai that hurts the user. I believe in the idea that the Bankai is the user's greatest power like Ichigo and Byakuya and Soi Fon and multiple other Bankai in Bleach.
      Shouldn't be explained on how it equally affects the user and opponents, because it doesn't. It could be explained as each side of his Bankai represents audio and visual and it twists your perception on each to make it seem the opponents are going through the grizzly reenactment of a murder, then boom you're dead, if you're not strong enough to withstand it. I mean that is an equally plausible explanation of how his Bankai could work, or completely in they wrong direction. It's still up to the person to decide how they understand it, and that's just my thoughts on it

  • @Sora572
    @Sora572 3 ปีที่แล้ว +76

    I like to think that each character's Zanpakutō has a central premise or "theme" that determines how their Shikai and Bankai work. In this case, I think the theme of Katen Kyōkotsu is theater. More specifically, I believe his Zanpakutō represents the dichotomy of tragedy vs comedy. Many people consider tragedy and comedy to be two sides of the same coin, and Katen Kyōkotsu is essentially a physical manifestation of this idea.
    For example, his Shikai is about children’s games. On the one hand, children playing games will often laugh their little heads off at the sheer joy they’re having, and getting people to laugh is largely the point of a comedy. On the other hand, the idea of watching grown men play children’s games like red light green light is ridiculous to most people. So, when it does happen, everyone in view will often find one reason or another the laugh at the events. Kyoraku’s Shikai basically forces the later situation on both himself and his opponents, but with much more lethal results.
    Then there’s his Bankai, which clearly represents the idea of tragedy. The depressing atmosphere, the dark lighting, the exceptionally sad story, suicide pacts, all of these are basic tropes of the genre. Hell, the story itself is about two lovers, and few tragedies are more well known (and/or constantly reused) than the quintessential lover's tragedy: Romeo and Juliet. Kyoraku’s Bankai basically weaponizes this by throwing the story itself at every one involved.
    I think the range of the Shikai and Bankai are representative of this as well. The enjoyment of a game is often limited to those participating in it, but a tragic play affects everyone in the theater. As a result, Katen Kyōkotsu’s shikai only affects Kyoraku himself and his opponent, or, more loosely, his “playmate” at the time. His Bankai, however, is a full on theatrical performance. The lights are dimmed, the parts are assigned, the stage is set, everything necessary to create the perfect atmosphere is implemented in his Bankai. However, this also means that everyone in the “theater” is affected by it.
    And what is the theater, you ask? Simple. It’s the range of Kyoraku’s Reiatsu. Anyone close enough to feel his Reiatsu is an “audience member”, which means they can view (and even participate) his performance. And while he may be able to control which play the theater puts on, there's not much he can do about who enters the theater.
    That’s my two cents anyway.
    (Note: Edited for spacing and spelling.)

    It fits with his ruthless pragmatism that comes into play when things get dangerously urgent. Some Shinigami see war and fighting as your typical play of Samurai Honor but Shunsui sees it for what it really is, and will end it quickly to ensure his faction and more importantly his allies survive. Shunsui is a modern warrior in more ways than one even if he leads an organization that values archiac notions of honor.

  • @Nurriek
    @Nurriek 3 ปีที่แล้ว +59

    I think Kyoraku isn't in control of the Bankai, at least in so far as the part he plays.
    I think that he understands his role in the Bankai and so has resigned himself to it. That's his advantage. He knows how the story will end. One of two ways. _You die, or we die._
    That overlooks the 3rd possibility. The opponents are stronger than him in either will or spirit, and Kyoraku is the one who is going to die in the story. He is not the one playing the role of the woman, but the husband with regrets.
    His relationship with his Zanpakuto also seems to be much more intimate, but also more of a Bargain, or an agreement of some kind. They live together. They die together.
    Very interesting design.

    • @GSnugg
      @GSnugg 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not a matter of stronger will or spirit, but a matter of rules. Those who witness his bankai are bound to the rules. Only Yhwach can possibly *not* die from it, as his powers are multiversal [past/present/future/tangible/ethereal; all at once], so to speak & Kyoraku's power, and rules, can only work in one verse/plane.

If Tite Kubo add and writing more abilities on Shunsui bankai like give him a power of imagination since his bankai is already about imagination of 2 lovers died each other which kinda based on Japanese mythology legend of " *Shinjū* " make it more bit op and broken since Kubo rushing it the Manga

    I also think there're more "plays" to his Bankai, just like how his Shikai has more than one "game". I think he's at the whim of Katen Kyokotsu on which play and he and anyone else who gets affected are just chosen as the actors in random roles (hence why it was not safe for him to use during fake Karakura). With the play we saw, Lille "chose" his role by hitting Kyoraku beforehand

    i Could see his Bankai being able to perform different Plays, depending on the situation.
    It could very well be that he tells a story and his Enemy caught up in it.
    Why he does not want anyone else in it, could be because it is sharing his deepest feelings and thoughts and is very intimate. Just like it is with poets that write their plays. Maybe he does not know and trusts in her that she could sustain such a burden of emotions. He always shielded her from everything.

I wonder if it could even take down somebody as powerful as Bankai Yamamoto, since the 1st Act should definitely be able to bypass Yama's perfect flame defense and injure him, triggering for sure the following Acts. That said, I kinda doubt that the killing blow at the end would be able to get through Yama's flames (which I certainly don't see being extinguished by the water of Act 3).

    i suspect more people become different characters. which is part of why he's so selective in using his bankai. it isn't that kyoraku is in control, he just knows the story very intimately, and acts to ensure he gets the role he wants.
    it also explains his behavior over-all. from his effeminate mannerisms to his playful fighting style. he can't commit to being the aggressor until he can be sure he won't need his bankai, because he doesn't want to be the husband

    So, my shot at this: Kyoraku can activate his bankai only when he is badly wounded. Once badly wounded there is a thread-like connection between the aggressor and the victim that forces both of them to literally live the tragic story. So once activated the aggressor is doomed: he either choses to die by accepting the story's end or gets killed by trying to flee his promise like a coward. Basically when you face Kyoraku you have three choices: you either kill him in one blow, run away or be a drinking buddy to him. Once you've heavily wounded him, you're fucked.

    This bankai is actually one of my favorites along with Urahara's and Yamamoto's. I REALLY wish we got to see Ukitake's because since him and Shunsui were equal's, we can assume his was just as deadly as Shunsui's. Anyway, I think his bankai is pretty OP aside from the story which made perfect sense. The way his Shikai and Bankai are linked (Shikai = playful as a kid, Bankai = sorrow as an adult) reflects Shunsui's life. I can't recall another zanpaktou like that and it fits him perfectly. What would be theoretically interesting is if he can control the "plays." In other words, what if his bankai were plays that would "theatrically" adjust to the enemies weaknesses? The story would be the same but it would have different "events" leading to the same outcome which is death? Those "events" would determine if the next act is needed if the enemy doesn't die before his or her ultimate doom? Just a theory...

  • @deepvybes
    @deepvybes 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    My opinion: The drawback to this Bankai is that anyone trapped in the play (the area) needs to play out all of the acts. Shunsui would have to know how the bankai works at some point in training? So meaning, he knew the risks. Someone has to die, and if the opponents resolve is strong, it's possible that both the man and woman (in the play) die, like the woman is trying to find someone to properly go down with her in act 3.

    The transition between the acts are likely not a single path.
    It might even be a branching story.
    My guess is that if Lille hadn't tried to flee during the third act of the play, it wouldn't let Kyoraku trigger the fourth.
    Just like with his Shikai's "games", where both "players" are bound by the rules, there are conditions to be met for each step, and Kyoraku probably picked the play based on context;
    His wounds relative to his enemy is similar enough to the premise of the play for its rules to apply.

    Saying Shunsui's Shikai or Zanpakuto is some since represents a degree of "fairness" is routed in a misconception of Shunsui's character.
    "Remember what Yamamoto said, " Shunsui's is a peace loving man who loves to talk his way out of a fight but he was always able to see the truth."
    And what exactly does Yama mean by this? The truth in this context is analogous to the reality of the world being a doggy-dog place; hyper-competitive, unfair and unforgiving. *Worst of all, everyone's forced to play and be apart of it*. Shunsui himself hate this, has the greatest disdain for it to the point in which is 'causes him depression and great pain but he simultaneously embraces this world and plays the *game* for what it is.
    So his Shikai/Bankai/Zanpakuto is not holding up to some measure of fairness, it's maintaining an *appearance* of fair play to *distract* you from the harsh reality that its not. Remember, Shunsui might initiate all the games but he doesn't have to tell you all the rules right away unless necessary, and he's the one that knows the ends and outs of each game, all the loop holes and when the game has switched. Bankai, same thing, the other party doesn't know what triggers the next act and I have a sneaky feeling, regardless of what they do, Shunsui can progress the play as he sees fit anyway. But the story on top of it maintains this *illusion of fairness* (he can just alter the dialogue impromptu for the situation), just like his shikai and just like Shunsui does himself. I'm sure the theories of him having potentially other plays that he could perform, would follow this line of reasoning in some way shape or form too.
    So his Zanpakuto is actually a perfect parallel to his personality, like someone said, "it's a double entendre on the word play", but also a metaphor for the game of life we all play and are forced into. The games and theatrics are his grace to you, to distract you from the harsh reality your put into, that this shit actually not fair at all and he's not actually going to fight you like it is.
    Just, appear to. :)
    Incredibly well designed and DEEP character, truly a peak fictional character.
    I know his is a late comment for this but relevant still since the anime will be showing this within the next year.

    It was satisfying IMO. The man severely blames himself for two deaths. The Bankai representation of the emotional pain he feels. But as it’s emotional you don’t physically feel it.
    On top of his desire to make up for those two deaths. Remember, he became so pro-life and fearful of wrongful death he stood up to Yamamoto. His teacher/leader of centuries.
    It’s definitely not a good fit for a captain commander Bankai. But Hitsu(Toahiru Hitsugaya) does but still has a long way to go. Considering Buddhism version of hell. And Yamamoto’s being more akin to abrahamic religions hell.
    But Shunsui’s Bankai furthered his character, explained his personality in more detail and self blame for his brother and Nano’s mom.
    But also his desire to regain honor (Seppuku) being shown through it.
    And if being an ultimate protection technique that would be perfect for guarding a captain commander.
    Lastly his duality being on full display. Wanting to enjoy life, tried to. But carries the burden of ultimate regret, by putting the hairpins and cloak on daily, wishing to pay for his actions. And using his Bankai to inflict the emotional pain lives in. ( pain not being there, as emotional pain isn’t physical) but has the most painful ways to die, drowning, disease etc.

He wanted nanao to stay out so she doesn't accidently get pulled in to the script. The opponent, maybe not knowing the script being used, can be expertly manipulated into doing what is necessary to advance the plot. So long as the script is followed anyone who can't fight against the bankai's effects will eventually fall to it.

    I hate that so many abilities in the back half of Bleach ended up being so incomprehensibly undefeatable. It made fights go one of two ways, countering enormous bullshit with phenomenal bullshit or a one-sided, unwinnable fight for one of the participants. A race to the "win" button, so to speak.
    It started with Aizen and only got worse as it went. It drained all of my excitement for the series... where's the fun if there's no way for one side to win? Except, of course, for Ichigo "Mr. Final Getsuga" "Just Hit Them With a Bigger Stick" Kurasaki?
    Gin should have killed Aizen, dammit. It was perfect...or Soi Fon. She hit him with two strikes, he should be dead! What's the point of having rules if you just ignore them when you want to build tension!?

      @@loomi3737 My point is that they never should have let Soi Fon get that second hit on him in the first place. It removed her worth entirely and devalued every single unorthodox skill in the series from that point forward.
      As for Gin...no, that would not have been anticlimactic. It would have been a clever, well-planned gotcha that took a character that had been established as nigh-undefeatable with a *groan* "wish granting orb" and delivered a believable, justified defeat of an otherwise invincible ability, Kyouka Suigetsu.
      The Bleach manga reeks of the constant escalation that plagues the shonen genre, where good storytelling always gives way to bullshit that hooks you on the next weekly chapter. They all devolve into power creep and nonsense eventually....but for some reason Bleach's downfall hit me hardest. Possibly because I expected so much more.

    I may be completely wrong but since Kyoraku’s shikai
    was children’s games then his bankai were mature plays usually tragedies.
    I think what happens is that whoever is in range of the bankai’s area of influence will be forced to become the characters in the story.
    I believe that the storyline may change depending on who the “actors” are
    and that the amount of control Kyoraku has may be severely limited.
    Of course again I may be wrong and it’s only that particular story and those particular acts.
    But I think it would make things very interesting if the storyline does get altered (it still would be a tragedy) and Kyoraku does not get much of a say in how that happens.
    It would make it even more of a double edge sword than his shikai as with the children games you can at least figure out the rules and win while the bankai would just assign you your role in the story and that is that.
    Plus it just would be awesome to see more stories acted out.

    No. No. The key to understanding this bankai is understanding the shikai. The shikai brings child’s play (games) to life. The bankai brings adult plays (dramas) to life. The key to beating the shikai is to figure out the rules and win the game. The key to beating this bankai is to understand your part and play it in a way that favors you.
    Shunsui needs to pick the right children's game/adult drama to use for the right opponent. I bet that just like he has multiple games with different rules he can use, there are several storylines/plots and sets of characters he can use as befits the situation or opponent.

  • @DamagdHart64

    Ok so his bankai has the multiple steps right. What if Kyoraku only went through all the steps of his bankai because his enemy was just that strong. A weaker enemy against his bankai could possibly die in the first or second act. I'm also pretty sure that Kyoraku (being well aware of his bankais first act) may or may not take damage on purpose. You said it yourself, if someone is fighting him without knowing anything about his bankai or how he fights you'll never know what he has planned.

  • @DLAJC
    @DLAJC 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The way it makes sense to me that this Bankai is only used on enemies that have a major power different than Shunsui. The pre-requisite is probably the same as in act one. That if the enemy hits Shunsui, and Shunsui is unable to damage the enemy so they can get into their roles. I think this is only intended to be used on enemies that are too powerful for Shunsui to deal with. Also, I think if Lile Barro didn't escape act 4 will not trigger. So using the Bankai has a drawback. If his opponent did commit. they would die together.

    • @DLAJC
      @DLAJC 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thinking on this more, Kyoraku's ShiKai has different games. What if his Bankai also has different stories base on the situation. We got a sad love story base on what happened with Kyoraku and Lil Barro. If Nanao was in the radius of effect, there may be a new story. Another way of looking at this is Kyoraku might be the storyteller and he has to follow certain plots that Katen Kyōkotsu wants. Kinda like in Shikai Katen Kyōkotsu decides what games to play. In Bankai Katen Kyōkotsu is a child that requests a play from Kyroaku. It is kinda a weaker version of Gremmy's power which Kyroaku's stories come true for the people that are affected with the Bankai.

    Weird as heck that his Shikai and Bankai have almost nothing to do with eachother. One is about playing "games" and the other is a "play"? Are the games referring to the little kid spirit part of the bankai?
    Like, other bankai and shikai have SOMETHING to do with eachother.
    1. Ichigo's blade becomes larger, almost like it's reflecting his spiritual power; and allows him to release getsuga. Bankai like does the opposite and compresses all the energy, and seems like getsuga gets stronger.
    2. Renji's becomes that extendo-blade, bankai is like a giant version of this, but as a snake.
    3. Byakuya, them flower petals, bankai is more petals and swords
    Even Soifons has some relation, shikai is double sting and kill. Bankai as weird as it is is super rocket but one hit kill.

    Like many of bleach lovers..i also think that kyoraku has many plays in his sleeve. But he has to choose one based on the situation. In novel he used another new technique. Basically his true ability is change the reality by the plays he choose fit the situation. That's why he feared nanao will catch up and he had to include her in the play. In per bankai he can use only one story. there is another possibility that he never get to choose the story. Its the zampaktu who choose the story. It depends on the mood of the zampaktu. That is why Shunsui mentioned before the release of his bankai " lets see what is waiting for me on the other side". Well, if he always use the same story..then he should have known all the acts and ending scenes.Man..hell of a power..this is much scarier..and this is the true power of him. I think their would be a different play is nanao was their to fit the setting just like their is multiple games. I'm not sure if it would be automatic or his choice but I would assume it would have to choose a play that could incorporate everyone as players.
    As for it's effects I'm guessing it's kinda like a choose your own adventure story. Since Lillie decided to try and escape it transitioned into the neck slice. But if he hadn't it would have resulted in both of them dying via drowning. Basically the story of the play follows the actors changing the symbolic effects with it.

    I think Shunsui is not in control so much as he is just a medium from which the story can be told and is thus forced to go along with it. Like you pointed out, he is the woman in the play. So if Nanao was caught up in it, or anyone else for that matter, and they panicked and tried to escape the water, Shunsui would be forced to kill them in accordance with the play. That's why his Zanpakuto appears, she is the real power controlling the play and is just acting through Shunsui. She's the narrator so to speak.
    So I do think that Shunsui would also die if he tried to escape the water as the narrative would just change to the woman losing her will and trying to back out of the promise, at which point the "man" would kill her. Or maybe Katan would appear behind Lille making him the woman in the play and Shunsui the man. So the water isn't just a battle of edurance, but a battle of wills. Shunsui just has the advantage since he knows what to expect

    I get the feeling his Shikai is meant to be fair while his Bankai is meant to be unfair.

    I think it's really well done when you consider the shikai is about the woman being cruel and and unwilling to compromise forcing shinsui to use whatever move she wants. It gives more layers to the bankai

    I like the fact that we see her, the sword just as we saw her in the anime. I love call backs like this. Because I felt they got Rukia's and Byakuya's swords done well in the anime too. I imagined that Rukia's sword would be a beautiful snow witch. I particularly like theirs, Shuhei's, Izuru's, and Yamamoto's.

    I thoght the second act changed somehow the reality of the oponant, in this case, making those holes of the fist act a decease that he had from birth, but maybe the tranlation of the site was wrong, the way you said made much more sense

    I think that suicide pact in act 3 is not an actual suicide pact but the ending toxic relationship. The girl wants to be in that toxic relationship even after getting hit by the abusive man(which is an indication that relationship is sour) but the man wants to end it (although he promised to be in it forever) and run away so she slits his throat.
    Also Kyokaru's whole character gives me a kind of Byronic Hero feels which makes this whole thing even better.

    This makes me think...how cool would an anime character's power be to force them and their opponents to play the role of characters in different stories? Like, imagine a character activating their power and forcing themself and their opponent to play through King Lear or Romeo and Juliet? This is a cool Bankai.

    I thought his bankai was awesome, but I still wonder about something Ukitake said
    your bankai mustn't be used where people can see it
    so, if a group of people had been dragged in, would all of them have played the same role in the bankai script?
    would every member of a group essentially be the man in this play? or could some people be seen as background characters, who would just feel the full terror of being close to and seeing Shunsui's bankai

    what im thinking right now is : Maybe the bankai depends on the enemy mind state.
    Comparing the theatral story and Shunsui bankai in this fight :
    _In the play Lille got desperate and tried to escape then Shunsui finished him up.
    _Following the story of the lovers, the man broke the suicide pact and so he died cause the woman murdered him.
    Let's imagine that Shunsui bankai is a narrative. So, let's imagine further that the narrative has two different paths , these two paths are dependent on the enemy.
    The first path is the path where the men (enemy) cowardly breaks the suicide pact and tried to escape, so it leads to the ending were he is the only one dead cause he gets murdered by the woman.
    The second path is the path where the men stays truthful to the pact and both died.
    Do you understand where im trying to get ? The moment Shunsui activated his bankai death was inevitable. Lille was acting as the men and so he went the first path and tried to run away, Shunsui acting has the woman finished him up. BUT WHAT IF Lille followed the second path and he never desperated and runned away ? Exactly, both of them would die cause that's how the narrative was writed, both men (lille) and woman (Shunsui) would drown and die together.
    Taking in mind what i said, Shunsui bankai looks a like a last resort option cause how dangerous it can be for the wielder. It can finish off the enemy but it can also end the wielder's life.

    I had this feeling about a lot of Bankai reveals in the last arc, except for maybe Urahara’s which actually seems to fit who he is, this one had a cool story, but it just felt like something cobbled together out of nowhere, even his relationship to Nanao that comes after. Cool concept, odd execution.

      there's tons of self reflection on everyones shikai and bankai. i've said it before and i'll say it again :P, everyones sword reflects who they are, tosen, komamro, kuchiki, kenpachi, unohana, aizen, they all match there inner souls true desire

      I might agree on the shikai, but the bankai not so much, thought it was cool concept, but I think we needed more of it overall.

    I wonder how someone would combat this bankai. Say Kyoraku and Byakuya used their banksia against once another; how would that work?
