Taylor Eigsti proving once again why he's one of the best piano players in the game today! What an intro. And once the band comes in and it just cooks? Gah...there's nothing better! :D
key moments: 0:57 - Claire de lune reference 1:49 - Talyor's insane left hand 4:07 - kendrick sneaks in 5:02 - head 5:36 - John's 1st sax solo 6:13 - Taylor's 1st piano solo 6:39 - the lick 6:47 - John's second solo 7:18 - some nice sax vibrato 7:21 - Taylor's second piano solo 7:50 - Taylor and John's call and response(the best part) 8:00 - Joshua Crumbly's chops 8:19 - Kendrick jumpscared by his own playing 8:23 - Taylor bopping his head 8:29 - FULL TAYLOR EIGSTI ACTIVATED 9:02 - John's 3rd solo 9:35 - Taylor returns 10:07 - head 11:00 - John Ellis' suspicious face
@@gavinclark2786 I can kinda hear it, but it really could be similar scales. It doesn't sound like the claire de lune main theme, but more like that part around measure 66, but I think it is a stretch.
I dont know how many times i have repeated this amazing performance... throughout these 8 years since its upload. This is a contemporary classics. Pure fiery
4:01-4:17 So good. It's funny how it's literally just Gmin---> Bbmin and yet he adds so much tension to it and builds up until the rest of the quartet comes in. I also have to say I absolutely love how Kendrick sneaks in at 4:07.
this is gold star--super stratosphere jazz of t he highest order---the musicianship is utter genius---thank you to them for giving us this and thank you for uploading it.
Taylor Eigsti has some wicked chops. But no matter what, his playing is always extremely musical. Whole band killer, the tune is awesome, beautiful changes, great groove. I detect a Chris Potter influence in John Ellis playing. Good for him.
Not that this compostion needs any assistance, but did you hear the siren outside at the intro? Makes it even more surreal... These guys rip it up on this tune!!
Hold up. Are those snares on the top head?! I was a jazz drumming student and I never once witnessed that. Is that more common in the jazz community? It's super interesting.
No, he definitely had that snare drum just completely upside for the opening intro (clear head on top), and made some super interesting sounds. Then flipped it back upright at some point during the song (coated head back on top). I'll have to rewatch again to see if I can find out how he managed to flip the drum over. Also, if you listen at 10:30, he's doing that awesome hi-hat bell groove with the rim knocks on the snare, and it all sounds pretty standard. Then at 10:36 you can hear a distinct change in the rim knocks. At first I thought he was flamming something with his right hand, but I figured out what he's doing and it is really cool. He changes the angle of his left stick so that it's dragging along the rim of the tom before hitting the snare rim, and he continues doing that until 11:28. Such a creative drummer with his sounds. It gives those rim knocks suck a more fat and pronounced groove. Ugh, I could listen to those sounds all day.
Ok, so the snare flip-over must have happened off-camera at 5:35. Right after that you can hear the snare has a much throatier sound through the rest of the song. Such powerful creativity with something so simple. Getting so much more sound out of a single piece of equipment. I especially love how he drags his stick across the snare threads at 4:40 (and I think he does it somewhere closer to the intro as well at 4:07). I would have never thought to try that.

Jesus....he is literally melting that ride cymbal... unbelievable all around. But as a drummer myself...that ride cymbal playing is utterly mystifying
any bit in particular. I'm a guitarist but would like to know which bits you mean.
@@richfrommitch 7:20 maybe, there's a lotta good stuff in this though
Taylor eigsti, my favorite jazz pianist
I'm a keyboardist, and after that hearing that, I've got nothing to say but, wow! The dynamics and triplets and left hand is over-the-top crazy.
This the left hand power. Not many players have it

At least type in John Ellis on T. Sax, and Taylor on piano/nord! look up the musicians and credit them please :)
