  • This is the first part of a lecture session on the pushover analysis procedures for the performance assessment of building structures. This Part 1 covers the conventional first mode based nonlinear static analysis procedures including the following.
    a) The Capacity Spectrum Method (ATC 40, FEMA 356)
    b) The Displacement Coefficient Method (ATC 40, FEMA 356)
    c) The FEMA 440 Improved NSPs (FEMA 440, ASCE 41-06/13)

      Dear sir , is the concept of Response reduction factor or Response modification factor is originated from it which you explain in capacity spectrum method to modify spectrum for performance point and u explain the reason to convert NL model to Equivalent linear model.
      Dear sir please explain if possible does R factor and CSM to modify spectrum for performance point have same concept with different mechanics or they are entirely different phenomenas .
      I wish to hear from u dear sir.

      No these two concepts are different. The reduction of response spectrum in CSM is to account for the additional hysteretic damping which is produced as a result of inelastic action.
      The R factor (in ELF and RSA procedures) accounts for the ductility and overstrength of structure i. e we just reduce the design forces while relying on the ductility and overstrength of the structure.
