The video is quite long, but his story is definitely worth listening to. If you're applying for the upcoming match then I wish you all the luck you can get. Hope you achieve your dreams.
    Timestamps for the video:
00:00 = Intro to the Channel and a bit about Johns Hopkins University
3:00 = Introduction of Dr. Gaurav Raj Shrestha, Graduation, Work
4:45 = When and how did you realize Anesthesiology as your calling?
9:19 = How does it feel to be an incoming Johns Hopkins resident? Introduction to his journey.
10:45 = What goes through Dr. Gaurav's mind when he thinks about his achievement.
16:01 = Deciding to go for Anesthesia and skepticism regarding IMGs only getting a choice of IM.
17:16 = How and when did he meet one the faculties from Johns Hopkins while attending Vipasana.
    19:00 = Talking about scores
22:00 = Dr. Gaurav's actual scores which he was too humble to mention.
    22:25 = Do Scores matter?
23:49 = How he gave CK exam after CS in short succession. Also how he got an observership at the University Of Texas
28:53 = Connections, are they improtant? How to network properly. Dos and Donts.
31:31 = What makes good match candidate look like? What is a PD looking for in the applicant?
41:21 = "For every candidate there is one PD out there". Does Dr. Gaurav believe this fact? "Matching" is just like dating.
44:47 = Dr. Gaurav's Interview Experience at Johns Hopkins. How are residency interviews conducted?
53:22 = Summary of the session and some golden tips for aspirants.
    Hope this helped ^_^

Its obvious that such a great story cannot be narrated in few minutes. Once the conversation started, it was seamless. And I really love the way Dr. Gaurav illuminated the talk with his smile. This is a blend of a good host and a genuine guest speaker. There is a lot of content here for fellow USMLE aspirants. Thank you for the video and I wish both of you all the best.

Is there any chance I can talk with Dr. Gaurav on how to get into an Anesthesiology program

Wonderful interview dai. I just wanted to know a few things. Can I give my Step 1 in 3rd year and appear for Step 2 after Internship(i.e. almost 3 years gap inbetween also considering the rumour of change in guidelines after 2022? And is it imp to have publications? How long are USCE? How much does the entire process from exam fees, visa, applications, observership, US stay, etc. cost ?(Some tentative figures would also help) It would be immense help to plan whether or not to pursue USMLE if you(@thelifedoc) or Gaurav dai could give me answers.Thank You!

    • @thelifedoc909
      @thelifedoc909  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thanks Abhi, great question. The modalities of testing and system changes quite a lot but USMLE and ECFMG notify you about these changes consistently. Here's my take on your questions regarding the developments and news that I have read and understood until the time of making this comment.
      1. You can give your Step1 in any year of medical school so if you want to give it in your 3rd year and if you can manage it. You can do it.
      2. Giving Step2 during your internship i.e after 3 years is not a problem because, the validity of Step1 is for around 7 years I think and graduates in the US also do this in a similar way. Step1 after 2nd year and Step2 during their 4th year I guess. So that is not much of a problem.
      3. About the change in scoring system, according to USMLE, the scores of Step 1 will be reported as pass and fail after January 1 2022. And they have mentioned that they will not alter the socre reports after they are published. Simply meaning, if you give your Step1 before Jan 1 2022 then you will receive a numerical score. The score will not be converted to Pass/Fail.
Eg: You gave your exam before Jan 1 2022, so you got a score of 260+ (best wishes) and one friend gave the exam after Jan 1 2022. Then when you both apply for the match, You will present a numerical score and your friend will just have a pass/fail result mentioned.
Not sure about the impact but that is how it might turn out.
      4. About publications, I guess Dr. Gaurav didn't have a publication at the time of match (I'm not sure about this). If you have them then its great but even if you don't they shouldn't be a deal-breaker.
      5. The cost of the process (I will make a video about it after some time as well). Total cost would come to around from anywhere to 12-20lakh Rupees. Depends on a lot of factors. I guess Gaurav dai can answer this question and I have another guest speaker coming soon who will talk about it.
      6. For USCEs, (I will also make a separate video). There are two kinds, one is "Elective" that you do by going to the US while you are in medical school. Other is "Observership" that you do in the US after graduating from your medical school. So a lot of things to touch on, in a single comment reply. I hope I answered your questions. :) For other answers, I guess Dr. Gaurav will reply too. He currently is kind of busy with preparations for the flight and rooming in so. :)
      Hope this helped buddy.
