thanks for the download. Page was a Master of the Tone and Atmosphere. In the TSRTS he is always playing with the knobs on the Les Paul; being a studio musician he knew what sound he wanted.
TSRTS = Standard 50's Wiring : Bridge PUP T Top Lowish power at 7.5k ohms Neck Pickup PAF Alnico 2 Magnet unpotted at a high 8.6k The Neck PUP was set BELOW the pickup ring to balance the Bright Low Wind T Top. The mods came when the T top was switched out for a Duncan in 1984.. I replicate TSRTS tones on my channel with a detailed explanation (No Quarter etc)
Good call on TSRTS. Its especially apparent in Since Ive Been Loving You; page conjures some amazing tones on that, slowly adjusting as it goes. The slow blues style is perfect for such tonal exploration, especially when it deviates from the natural 12 bar form and goes into those awesome chord changes. Its super atmospheric, Page plays those octave riffs and keeps dialing the tone in perfectly. Absolutely epic

That T Top cleaned up really nicely and had that Nasal Twang which gave that Classic Unique Hollow Mid position sound....It's a pity no mainstream pickup winder does a 1973 Page set..
We will always associate to that "out of phase neck humbucker sound" , with Peter Green. And that's just cool as all heck! Even Jimmy Page refers to it as the Peter Green sound. - Love me some old early 70's Fleetwood Mac. Interesting fact, Peter Green's Pickup was not wound backwards or on a phase switch, his Les Paul had a reversed magnet to achieve the sound, though it sounds nearly the same, no way to switch it off. Early Gibson semi hollow bodies did this on purpose, who knows why? But BB King loved it.
I know that it has been a while since you did this work, so please accept my late thanks! I own the 1995 Jimmy Page Signature and this is the clearest explanation of all the variants. You've also saved me money on a Greeny, because what I liked best was the two HB out of phase sound, but you've shown me how easy it is to get with the guitar that I already have which is a much nicer build with a far superior finish. This has to be the most versatile guitar ever!...So many tones... Jimmy Pages main tone live was Middle Position In Phase Parallel #6 tone here...( standard middle tone).. The Instrument in the Zeppelin years was 50s wiring with only 3 sounds ..No coil split, out of phase or anything.Just like a regular Les Paul.
Having this done to my SG soon. I'm stoked. I've been a strat guy most of my career so far, but really have fallen in love with the Gibson scale length, and convenience of humbuckers driving the amp harder - so my main axe for a while has been an SG standard - can't wait to have this done as then one guitar does it all. Be so useful for gigs where I only need one instrument. And also, for recording.

Excellent choice of pickups! Most humbuckers sound like crap when split, and the ones that are made for splitting don't sound good as humbuckers. that combo seems to work very well.
So after you get the Page modification installed and operational, ( I have one ) why would you need any other electric guitar for tones and sounds for recording? Unless of course, you just want that sound or feel of whatever you like to play... I just turned 1 guitar into 21 thanks to the instructional. Great tutorial!! 2025: Guitar manufacturers loath this mod! Its killing the entire industry, nobody's buying new guitars, especially Fenders because they all just buy the Les Pauls and do this mod. The new craze over this tone style leads Zeppelin to finally reunite and record one more album called Swan Song.

I was able to do this wiring all by myself a while back, while installing new duncans with 4-conductor wires, beware though some diagrams are wired for independent volume control which sucks big time. Also chose to split the screw bobbin from the neck pickup, instead of the slug bobbin and they are still hum cancelling with the added benefit of more bell like neck tone from the position of the screw bobbin
At the 24 second mark you see the original Gibson PCP board. What I don't understand is why am I seeing 4 capacitors on it? I know 2 of them are for the tone, but what are the other two white Mallory caps for? Treble Bleed?
I think, if I remember correctly, the original 2012 pcb board had a special "fat tap" coil tapping system on the humbuckers, which sent each tapped pickup through an additional capacitor.
Am about to embark on this wiring and I don't have Covid as an excuse! Do you find you still use the switches settings etc after these years? (Are you Scouse too?)
Good luck! Honestly, no. 99% of the time, for gigs I use it in humbucker mode, much like a regular Les Paul. But, it's a cool thing to have, and in the studio it's fun to fiddle around. I suspect, once the initial solder flux influenced fever dream wears off, most people will leave the knobs alone and play it like a LP! Yes, Scouse. In Woolton.

Very similar, yeah, but not identical. I'm not exactly sure what the wiring was on the 2017 models, but my 2013 standard came with 4 pushpulls, (2 x coil taps, 1x phase and 1 x blower ). The JP set up has a series/parallel push-pull instead of the blower and is wired a bit differently.
Everything in the signal chain is a filter of some description. Your playing, the pickup, the knobs on the guitar, your lead, the amp, the knobs on the amp, and ultimately, and most importantly, your ears. It's interesting to record a dry signal at the same time as a wet signal, so you can see what the amp is really doing.
I've done mods like this on Strats where you can get every possible combination. What I found was I never used, or really liked, most of the sounds I got. It gets difficult to change sounds in a real world live situation or remember where you are with them. This does have some good options however.
I had a guitar made by an English luthier called Doug Wilkes which had three Dimarzio SDS's with series/parallel switches and mini toggles for reverse phase on each pickup, all three of which could be combined with either, or both, of the other pickups in any phase combination. It's given me a headache just typing all that so I'll leave it to a maths wizard to work out how many sound combinations that was. It was unbelievably complicated to use in a live situation, so lived in the studio. This, since it was physically unwieldy - 24 fret neck joined to the body at 24, and a heavy maple body with a tail cutout for a more comfy seated playing position - was likely it's intended environment. This ax sounds very similar in the range of sounds it can produce. My favourite guitar is Les Paul Junior- one pickup,no switches, no maths degree required.
No as it would need a phase reverse for the upper coil. It can be done but would need an extra switch. Or wiring the neck humbucker out of phase to begin with

No Jimmy got the Mods in 1984.. From Mid 72 all through Zeppelin , He had a T Top in the Bridge and a PAF in the neck... No mods. That came in 1984 when the Duncan replaced the T Top
No, The Ocean Solo was Middle Position Parallel " IN PHASE" ( std Gibson 50s wiring) Page Never had any wiring done in Led Zeppelin! ..That "Phase Cancellation " or famous "Hollow Chirp" he gets in Zeppelin is characteristic of the Low Wind (7.5k) aT Top.. Page got this Custom Wiring done on his #2 Les Paul in 1984 after Led Zeppelin and DOESN'T USE (or seldom uses) that instrument..."Page Wiring" is 100% irrelevant for the Zeppelin years. Further, you can't wire T Top or Original PAFs any other way other than Standard..
Yes, there's no treble bleed installed, so there will be some high loss, but not so much that I consider it a problem. (It would have to be life threatening to make me want to go back into that rats nest of a cavity again)
Yeah, depending on how you wire it, don't see why not. You could choose what pickup gets phase reversed and what doesn't. Like a strat in positions 2 and 4.
Followed every bit of information to a "T" and still having problems because the phase knob is reversed. It's out of phase when it's pushed in. Pull it out and it's in phase. So frustrated.
@Bigcloudproductions I pieced it together using the same pots and caps but it turns out the wiring on a burstbucker is different for the bridge pickup. Jim Decola....THE Jim Decola who actually designed the circuits and was a Luthier for Gibson among other things, responded to my question in a Facebook group. He said he reversed the wiring on the bridge pickup to account for reverse wiring and magnet in the pickup. So white is hot, green is ground, unlike what all gibson other wiring colors are.

Capacitors are capacitors. As long as the value is the same IT IS THE SAME. Paper in oil is 100% snake oil. If you like the vintage look of them then by all means use paper in oil. But capacitors are capacitors. Any difference that is perceived is just due to the differing tolerances. Potentiometers and wiring are what really matters. Anyways, great guitar!
You're right. A capacitor has no inherent sound. But let's be honest, 99% of owning a Les Paul is the nostalgia and all the associated mojo bollocks, I'm guilty of that too, so I get why people prefer them. 😂

But I like to make the point that there absolutely nothing wrong with a $0.25 film cap as long as the tolerance is tight.
Great for studio work but I'd be lost in a live setting. WAY TOO MANY choices. I guess I'm more of a strat/tele guy - keeping it simple for simpletons like me.
@@57stratkat it's a studio thing. When I gig this guitar, it lives on the regular bridge pickup, like a normal LP. The most complicated wiring job I ever did was an S-1 switch on a Fender strat with an N-Tune on the pot next door. Talk about a spaghetti monster.
Cool setup. I didn't know someone had a pre-built wiring of the full 21 option Page wiring. I did something similar on a Les Paul years ago based on an article I read about that setup, but in the end the only thing I used at all live was splitting the neck pickup so it was a single coil to get a Fender-ish rhythm thing. I eventually rewired the guitar to standard with a single switch under the pickguard to split the neck, because I didn't really like the push-pull pots for switching live. I followed the schematics from sixstringsupplies and the TONE# 2 th-cam.com/video/JXXTUeMQ5uE/w-d-xo.html ( with only the neck pickup volume pulled up) activates the the North Coil ( SLUG coil / coil B) of the neck pick up. Not the screw (Coil A) side of the Neck Pickup.

It seems to me interesting that, no matter what pickup combinations you employ, it is the amp you select that dominates your tone more than anything.

It's interesting to record a dry signal at the same time as a wet signal, so you can see what the amp is really doing.
The most important thing in shaping the tone is the cab, the mic and the mic positioning you choose.

No Jimmy got the Mods in 1984.. From Mid 72 all through Zeppelin , He had a T Top in the Bridge and a PAF in the neck... No mods. That came in 1984 when the Duncan replaced the T Top
No, The Ocean Solo was Middle Position Parallel " IN PHASE" ( std Gibson 50s wiring) Page Never had any wiring done in Led Zeppelin! ..That "Phase Cancellation " or famous "Hollow Chirp" he gets in Zeppelin is characteristic of the Low Wind (7.5k) aT Top.. Page got this Custom Wiring done on his #2 Les Paul in 1984 after Led Zeppelin and DOESN'T USE (or seldom uses) that instrument..."Page Wiring" is 100% irrelevant for the Zeppelin years. Further, you can't wire T Top or Original PAFs any other way other than Standard..
did you experience any high loss when you roll off the VOL knob?
Yes, there's no treble bleed installed, so there will be some high loss, but not so much that I consider it a problem. (It would have to be life threatening to make me want to go back into that rats nest of a cavity again)

Would the phase switch work with a middle pickup?
Yeah, depending on how you wire it, don't see why not. You could choose what pickup gets phase reversed and what doesn't. Like a strat in positions 2 and 4.

Followed every bit of information to a "T" and still having problems because the phase knob is reversed. It's out of phase when it's pushed in. Pull it out and it's in phase. So frustrated.
Where did you get your kit/wiring diagram?
@Bigcloudproductions I pieced it together using the same pots and caps but it turns out the wiring on a burstbucker is different for the bridge pickup. Jim Decola....THE Jim Decola who actually designed the circuits and was a Luthier for Gibson among other things, responded to my question in a Facebook group. He said he reversed the wiring on the bridge pickup to account for reverse wiring and magnet in the pickup. So white is hot, green is ground, unlike what all gibson other wiring colors are.
@@fredtaylor9792 sounds like you've found the culprit. Swop the wires to standard and see if that solves it

Capacitors are capacitors. As long as the value is the same IT IS THE SAME. Paper in oil is 100% snake oil. If you like the vintage look of them then by all means use paper in oil. But capacitors are capacitors. Any difference that is perceived is just due to the differing tolerances. Potentiometers and wiring are what really matters. Anyways, great guitar!
You're right. A capacitor has no inherent sound. But let's be honest, 99% of owning a Les Paul is the nostalgia and all the associated mojo bollocks, I'm guilty of that too, so I get why people prefer them. 😂
@@BigcloudproductionsIf its because of the nostalgic factor associated with vintage/vintage style guitars then I completely understand and respect the decision to use paper in oil capacitors. But I like to make the point that there absolutely nothing wrong with a $0.25 film cap as long as the tolerance is tight.

Great for studio work but I'd be lost in a live setting. WAY TOO MANY choices. I guess I'm more of a strat/tele guy - keeping it simple for simpletons like me.
@@57stratkat it's a studio thing. When I gig this guitar, it lives on the regular bridge pickup, like a normal LP.
The most complicated wiring job I ever did was an S-1 switch on a Fender strat with an N-Tune on the pot next door. Talk about a spaghetti monster.
Cool setup. I didn't know someone had a pre-built wiring of the full 21 option Page wiring. I did something similar on a Les Paul years ago based on an article I read about that setup, but in the end the only thing I used at all live was splitting the neck pickup so it was a single coil to get a Fender-ish rhythm thing. I eventually rewired the guitar to standard with a single switch under the pickguard to split the neck, because I didn't really like the push-pull pots for switching live. There's a good video of Page talking about his #1 guitar where is says his #2 Les Paul had all those options, but he only added option 8 (Peter Green pickups out of phase) on his #1 guitar. th-cam.com/video/zTbbYk0ezeM/w-d-xo.html
The 21 sound harness was done circa 1985 on #2 by Steve Hoyland..I am unsure if anything was recorded with #2 ?

I followed the schematics from sixstringsupplies and the TONE# 2 th-cam.com/video/JXXTUeMQ5uE/w-d-xo.html ( with only the neck pickup volume pulled up) activates the the North Coil ( SLUG coil / coil B) of the neck pick up. Not the screw (Coil A) side of the Neck Pickup.

If you want a single coil sound .. play a strat
If you want a STRAT sound, play a strat. If you want a single coil sound, this will do just fine.
I`m sick of premade setups? Learn to wire it yourself.
Too many choices...by far. A crap song will sound crap no matter what 'setting' you use.
