Just so we know what we are talking about. Thyagaraja, the composer, is pleading to the Lord asking why he has given up on his devotee, and failed to show his smile-laden beautiful face. This is an plaintive appeal. Not a celebration.
With this in context, ask yourself if the cadence of this music by Shashank is doing justice to that mood. You will then understand why a viewer wrote that this rendition makes a mockery of the composition.

Yeh the thing is.. I think someone he knows throws his Rama statue in the river...so he sings this while crying...rama why did u leave me ...and he was going to die in the river with Rama but when he lifted the leg got rama😍song is beautiful

Then again I suppose it is a matter of opinion. That being said the techniques that he has developed have definitely transcended what was being used and played before (ie double octave playing, rhythmic playing, changing fingering on the fly to extend the octave range). I don't think anyone before him has perfected these techniques to this level.

I agree with you, I hate to sound like an expert but I certainly think he's phenomenal, and an experienced flautist acquintance of mine thinks he is easily the best and he was a huge fan of T.R. Mahalingam (having listened to him at his prime live).
