    I have been editing a lot using the new masking feature but was often confused with the intersect function. This video of Anthony's along with others helped me greatly. When new features come out in Lightroom, I look at many videos to learn something new, but I always choose Anthony Morganti every time for a clear explanation.

    One thing I find confusing about masks in Lightroom is that they represent the exact opposite of what a mask used to do. In the darkroom a red mask, masked out the light so that there was no effect under the mask (dodging). Even in Photoshop, a quick mask, masks out that part of the image, which is then not affected by an edit. Masks in Lightroom are really selections - whatever is "masked" is where the effect occurs.

  • @ZiggyAir
    @ZiggyAir 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can use intersect with only one selection; you don't need two selections. For example, select subject, then select intersect with. You have your choice. So you can control a section within your selection.

    On Lr mobile, we don't have Intersect button yet. But we can do this : Mask A intersect with mask B = Subtract the [inverted version of mask B] from mask A, vice versa. For example in the video, after create object mask, choose subtract -> color range -> select paint on her face -> invert the color range mask. Or you can create a color range mask first, then subtract the inverted object mask.

    The depth information is available in the newest iPad pro cameras (and iPhone 13 Pri, I think) and is a LIDAR camera, so it will appearently produce a grayscale 3D depth image that will be stacked with the color image of the normal camera. It can be used for a lot of things, one of which is to simulate shallow depth of field in images to make a cellphone image look a lot more like a 35mm image with a fast lens.
    It can also be used to produce 3D mapping information for space mapping and other 3D modelling uses (mostly through video applications or through a similar stereo paralax computational approach), so it is really powerful stuff.
    I think this is what people are talking about when they discuss computational enhanced photography.

  • @VTPyzon

    You have to use intersect to have masks work like they did prior to the update. As an example, you used to be able to easily limit the selection of a gradient based on luminensce. It used to be straightforward. Now you have to use intersect to accomplish the same thing. You used to be able to apply a preset to the selected gradient. This feature seems to lost. Where is it now?

    I like your delivery style, deliberate, properly paced and devoid of hype; and I wonder (for my own benefit) whether I can find an alphabetical list of topics - and subtopics ( i.e. Importing, Collections, Keywording, Masking, etc.) paired with the corresponding tutorial numbers - or titles, and dates. And ... do you delete tutorials so obsolete that they could be misleading? Thanks a lot for the quality of your tutorials.

  • @m7raqawi

    Thanks for the clarification, but i noticed that when duplicating a radial gradient both duplicates are selected and work simultaneously ie can not select and adjust separately! Unlike the previous versions where every duplicated tool works individually as selected..

  • @paulchoccyt1303
    @paulchoccyt1303 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    What annoys me and is slowing me down, is that when I use radial filters and then want to work on the skin only, before I could eyedrop the skin and make adjustments and it was done. Now you cannot do that and instead it selects the whole area and you then have to subtract areas you don't want affected, which is not 100% accurate and takes up more time. Is there a better way? (this would be to soften and smoothen the skin on the face only)

    • @timotmon

      The two circles intersecting graphic explains it perfectly. Notice in his example that when he picked the yellow, it didn't also mask the yellow background. However in reality it DID select that background too, but you don't see it in the mask because the only thinks that shows up is what's in the intersection.

    Hello Anthony. I have many of my Advanced National Park Service students following your tutorials. We have been using luminous and color range maps for sometime in our workflow for landscape art. While in general we like the new masking system we have found that making luminance mask selections it's not as straightforward as it was in the old system correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like moving me sliders to adjust the area is not nearly as precise and in some respects I feel like I'm working with blend if Sliders in Photoshop. It's elections we're getting our quite muddy and very poorly executed. Do you know something that we're missing that can help us and perhaps you can do it tutorial on how to use luminous and Colour range mask accurately in the new version. Thank you kindly

    Hi Anthony, with the update I have lost the Library, Develop, Map etc along the top right tool bar? I need to click on Window on the very top left tool bar to access these menus? I have done something to make the Library Develop tabs disappear?

  • @timotmon
    @timotmon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's funny, because if you work in 3D and perform a lot of Boolean operations this all makes perfect sense with lightroom masking. But I can imagine that it's not easy to get your head around if you don't have knowledge about what to expect when you do things.

  • @keithsimpson9754
    @keithsimpson9754 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    are you sure that you're intersecting with this example Anthony? aren't you just subtracting from a mask? Have you tried using subtract colour range by adding the colour range picker on various shades of paint as you did in the video? Have you thought about demonstrating intersecting using two circles of different colours which overlap? Hope this doesn't sound too negative. It's not meant to be.

    Surely for most people if they have LR theyve also got PS..it wouldnt occur to me to do this in LR in the first place, its the last app i'd think of....In PS its a few seconds to select and mask the yellow...sometimes i just dont get it...i understand the question but for me its moot in the first place...oh well

    • @jlopez7596
      @jlopez7596 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The key word is "most" not all LR users use PS and therefore it gives them a tool that they did not have access to. PS can be daunting to many people and therefore they only use LR. Nothing wrong with what you posted as I have to remind myself constantly that just because i would not or i have something that other people dont and it is useful to them.

    I am super bummed about the fact that you can not apply these masks in batch processing. It is virtually useless to me because of that. If PS can automate it why can LR not do it. An fine tuning mask is not possible. At least that I have found. The edge is super sharp. Again Adobe is catering to hobbyist vs professional.

    I want to first start out by saying how much I enjoy and learn from your videos. I thoroughly enjoy your easy-to-follow style and explanations. I was happy to discover you many months ago. Now for the less-happy part... Would you please discontinue using images of women that objectify and/or sexualize them? The woman with the yellow paint in this video is a prime example. It's a very degrading image and it's upsetting to see. It's one of many examples that I see in your videos, and even in some of the stock images that you choose. I would be very relieved and grateful if you would be more aware of the images you use, and avoid any that have women in provocative and degrading poses. Things like this are too common in photography, and if you could help to stop normalizing this type of portrayal of women you'd be doing a great thing. Thank you!
