  • When I first included British illustrator and poster artist John Hassall in the unsung heroes series there was surprisingly little to be found online. But a recent search has been considerably more successful in terms of useable pictures, and I'm able to make this more in-depth tribute.
    The book John Hassall -The Life And Times of the Poster King, written by Lucinda Gosling, has been invaluable in providing biographical detail, and I wholeheartedly recommend the book for anyone with an interest in the subject.
    As Hassall has been a particular favourite of mine since my teens I'm particularly pleased to be able to offer this look at his life and work.

    When I was growing up, I was surrounded by the art of many of the people you have featured on your channel. I recognise their images yet know very little of their life stories and accomplishments. Thank you, Pete, for shining a light on an underappreciated part of my life ✨️

      What a beautiful thank you tribute to Mr Beard. Were I he, I would be genuinely touched by such kind words and grateful acknowledgement. Beard truly does a lot of hard work/ collating, writing, narrating, video editing, and uploading all of his series as well as seamlessly threading the music through each eye of every needle. In his own endeavors, he, too, is creating works of art; he, too, is an under sung hero of illustration. And! I'm so HAPPY to have found THE DUDE/ DON/DUCHEE/ & DYNOMO ÷ 2 STILL = 1,000,000! IN 100% Agreement With You, I remain: sincerely yours Gregg Oreo Long Beach Ca Etats Unis

    I have, very much, enjoyed your productions from script to visuals. So often I see an artist's work that stirs a vague memory followed by a nostalgic feeling that warms me. The prodigious level of work that John Hassall, along with many others, is astonishing. It would be a true blessing to have museums dedicated to the great illustrators of the world. When one considers that these works have been seen by the general public in far greater numbers than any other art form, certainly merits to be held in high esteem and on display. From early childhood, these images are imprinted, influence the imagination, and provide extra information to complete and embellish the story. This is from a former art teacher in Colorado.

      Hello and your appreciation of the channel and its content is very welcome. There's plenty fine art I admire too but as a former illustrator and teacher of the subject it has always galled me that illustration has been treated as the vulgar relation to 'real' art, and that's what motivated me to create the channel.

    Hassall is one of my favorites, and certainly deserves a place in the "Golden Age of Illustration" yearbook. I was a little surprised he made the Unsung list, he had a longer career than most of the others. He didn't cross the Atlantic so well, which is why he may not be as well known as those who always had American Editions of their books. Thanks for another fine video.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Albert and thanks. As I said (or hinted at least) in the description box the only reason I put him in the unsung series was because at that time I couldn't find more decent pictures. Apparently everything does come to he who waits.

    A WONDERFUL video, Mr Beard, of a lifetime favourite illustrator of mine. THANK YOU.
    Like his contemporary Byam Shaw he worked well in every medium and both must magically have found the 25th hour in the day as their work is prolific to a degree unfathomable today.
    Hassall's work in ink is unique. The line is unmodulated and consistent - no tapering. The black nearer to his printers' tar-like black than that of the so-called India ink used for legal documents and certificates because of the oak gall guaranteeing safety against fading. The original artwork stands out against the printed version as day against night. His technical prowess is extraordinary. An artist of the first order.

    Thank you for this excellent video on John Hassall. Years ago I found a book illustrated by him and another artist named Cecil Aldin called "Two Well-Worn Shoe Stories" (each artist illustrates one story, with Hassal's being the first) in a used book store in the Jimbocho area of Tokyo (this is an area filled with used bookstores of various types and specialties that's fascinating to explore). I knew nothing of the artists, but immediately bought the book for my own study simply on the strength of the beautiful illustrations . Now, thanks to your profile, I understand more about Hassall's life and career.

    Well, as a Yank living here in France, I certainly appreciate and salute the talent of the British John Hassell. Great work, surprised I never knew his work ( sometimes, after seeing one of your videos, I feel like I've been living under a rock, not knowing anything of illustration history..;-)..). For some reason, I flashed on the wonderful Windsor McCay as I viewed these works (probably because of the excellent draftsmanship, line work, flat color and humor, especially some of the poses and expressions on the figures). I wonder if McCay was familiar with him. Another great tour, Pete. Thanks as always. Stay safe! Cheers!

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Doug, and McCay and Hassall were certainly contemporaries but I have no evidence that they were aware of each other. As far as I know neither had any impact in the other's country but I also have very little idea who knew what about who in those times. The only influences I know of for sure on hassall were Mucha and Cheret, which was from his time on the continent. Either way thanks for your continued support and I hope all is groovy in France. I wonder if you have visited the comic museum at Angouleme...

    • @wemblyfez
      @wemblyfez ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petebeard Yep--Visited Angouleme a number of years ago during one of the big annual fetes. A great time, even the street signs are shaped like speech balloons. One of the nicest comic art museums in Europe is in Brussels; if you have a chance to visit there, I'd highly recommend it. A little closer to your neck of the woods is the Chris Beetles Gallery in London where they specialize in illustration. They have a large collection of Quentin Blake originals plus, every year they have a huge illustration sale with all sorts of artists ranging from Rackham, Dulac, E. H. Shepard to Ronald Searle and other British cartoonists and illustrators. Always a great show, wonderful to see originals from these masters (unfortunately a bit pricey for us mortals, but inspiring all the same). Don't know how close you are to London, but well worth checking out, always something great on display. Cheers, Pete!

      Hello and thanks as usual for your appreciation and commitment to the channel. I find picture research considerably easier than the biographical stuff, and most of it comes from digital archives of libraries and museums around the world. In the case of Hassall there's a good amount of imagery on the Victoria and Albert Museum's site. And I don't want to disillusion you but most of the 'actual' books are digital fakery by me.

Illustration is considered craft more than art by a lot of the art world and to that I say the craftsmanship is born from artistic creativity and talent. You’re doing a cool thing here. 🫡

    After watching literally all of these wonderful videos - it begs the question of conservation of the artworks and makes me wonder where they are all stored. Are the originals still even in existence. According to some of the narrative, much has been lost (such a loss) ... but for that which remains - an extensive book must surely be in order.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello again and I've been surprised at how many of the originals have survived, even if most have not. Auction sites are all over the internet selling original artwork but some of the prices are well beyond the reach of mere mortals. And of course there are museums and galleries (although mostly in the USA) where originals by the better known are hung. But most of what exists - and especially by the lesser knowns - is in printed form only. Sadly in far too many cases the artwork was considered worthless and destroyed or left to rot. And despite the wanton neglect I think it would take several volumes of large books to collect what does exist.

Maybe I'll shunt him forward a bit.

    Amazing work Pete, thanks for putting this together… In your opinion, are most of his graphic works dip-pen for the inks and watercolor wash where there is color? I'm amazed at his facility with the pen, and it looks like he didn't often use a brush - a conspicuous lack of spotted blacks.

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and I can't be a tremendous amount of help answering your question. Some of the line work for smaller size book illustration was undoubtedly done with pen and ink, but it seems the colour was applied sometimes by hand as washes but in quite a few other instances added ar print -presumably to Hassall's instruction. But judging by the photographs there are of him in his studio the larger format work for posters (some at least 8ft by 6) were created as full painted images on canvas or board. So the line work on these would have been applied with black paint and brush. Whether he uesed oils or maybe tempera in these cases I just can't find out. It's the most frustrating aspect of making these videos and frequently guesswork on my part as a result.

      Hi Mike. Hassall ws considerably earlier than Leyendecker, but I doubt he would have known about Hassall's work as it wasn't published in the USA at that time. I suspect it's more that they were both part of the modernisation of techniques in graphics in the early 20th century, and that was common in Europe and the USA (although more so in Europe up to the 20s.) Either way I'm glad you appreciate his marvellous work.

    Hey Pete, yet another uncredited artist work used on an album cover. I recognized the image @ 5:18 so I checked on discogs and found only 1 John Hassall listing. I had to think for a while before I remembered the title "All Good Clean Fun", a various artist sampler from 1971. Sure enough it´s there only the "Boys Own" magazine has been substituted by the late 60´s early 70´s counter culture magazine "OZ" No.33.

      Hello again and this is my best shot...Like a lot of definitions the harder you look into them the more they confound you, and they do get a little fuzzy at the edges. And I'm aware that in the USA the distinction is less adhered to than in Europe.
      But at its simplest an illustrator is someone who creates images for reproduction in a book, magazine, or other printed or (these days) screen delivery. Usually but not always they work to commission.
      An artist in the old sense of the word, rather than the charlatans who abound these days, paints whatever they feel like and creates images which are intended to hang on a gallery or individual's walls.
      For me the key aspect is that the illustrator is part of a commercial industrial process.
      Rockwell called himself an illustrator, and he was absolutely correct. Even though his work now hangs on museum walls.
      That's all I've got, so over and out for now.
      Best wishes
      Pete.
