Turkey Set To Begin Work on Massive Canal Project

  • Turkey is set to begin construction of a huge canal on the edge of Istanbul soon, aimed at easing traffic in the Bosphorus. The nearly 10-billion-dollar canal will link the Sea of Marmara with the Black Sea and is estimated to be completed in seven years. Many have described the plan to build a 45-km canal through Istanbul, as risky as it is ambitious. But the Turkish government argues that diversified trade routes are crucial in keeping global trade flowing. So do the benefits of the canal outweigh the risks?

    Bosphoros canal is much larger than Suez canal. Minimum weidth of Bosphoros is 700m, there is no way that it can be blocked. Comparing it to Suez canal is already ridiculous. Its only benefit is giving Turkish gov an excuse to bypass Montreux Convention and start charging fees for passage. Other than that, it sounds like a "white elephant" project to me

    This is one of Turkey's projects that I am a bit hesitant about. I feel like making a huge canal like that could be a big ecological issue. Not to mention it will take away hundreds of kilometers of Turkey's European territory by submerging it under water...idk. It seems too ambitious and with minimal benefits

      @Mich Sky Just because something isn't important to you, or let me specify, just because you don't want it to be important, doesn't mean that it isn't. You obviously underestimate the trade that goes through Istanbul. Istanbul's GDP per Capita is comparable to the UK. And before you try to argue, yes I know what the difference is between GDP per Capita and GDP. Stocks alone don't make a city important. You could as well use Boston instead of NY for Stock Exchange. So you are not wrong, but you're ignoring other factors that make your argument half baked.

    • @Omantube
      @Omantube 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kerem, I see your point but you need to consider these points,
      1- Current shipping traffic volumes and expected growth rate.
      2- An expansion of the city of Istanbul, economically and demographically.
      3- Real Estate Developments.
      4- Sovereignty Implications and Montreux Convention.
      5- Finally, on average shipping waiting period isn’t only calculated on next number of days but total accrued cost, including Staff DIM, Insurance Surcharges, Running Cost of the ship during the queening period, and most importantly currently Turkey doesn’t allow longer waiting transit periods at the entrance of the Bosporus strait.

    because when the Montro agreement was signed only 3000 ships annual passed the Bosporus. Today annual 50.000 ships pass. This is dangerous. The Bosporus can not handle this much traffic. Now many ships needs to wait before entering Bosporus, some time 3 days or 5 days. It depends on how bussy it is. And for shipping firm its not profitible to wait for 5 days in sea. because every day is big money. So we will built a new canal and we will give opportunity to the ship firm. If you want to wait 5 days, okey wait, but if you do not want to wait 5 days, you can pay transfer fee and pass without waiting. No company will wait 5 days. + a new city will be build for 500.000-750.000 people. That will also easy the crowded Istanbul population because many will move to the new city built next to the canal
