Beyond just being really funny, I like how this scene actually demonstrates how Dwight and Jim are the two best salesmen in the company.
It’s always funny realizing just how much of their, (and yes even Michael’s) chicanery stem from being wonderful salespeople.
Dwight directly outwits by understanding value and how it can differ from person to person.
Jim makes the customer outwit themselves and lets them come to him

and how jim just can trick dwight even if dwight is a better salesmen at selling paper it shows hes not the best at everything just cause he tries so hard....his effort helps push a needed product in a bad climate for a small company but it will not excel in all sales....thats why jim has the advantage cause hes the opposite lazier prankster and not caring and he can play to dwight's neurotic naive side which most people dwight sells to can not ...if you know dwight hes screwed...he can not sell to you you know too much about how his brain works...

+LiqCharles It is not the directors cut, that ending is part of the show during its initial run. They always play a 15-20 second segment after the commercials at the end of the show, that is when it showed the Dwight watering the pots where he just planted the seeds. After he leaves, Jim rolls a cart over with 3 foot tall plants in them to swap.
Yes, I'm aware of the little segments after each episode. I'm talking about the initial run on NBC not Netflix. Netflix airs more tidbits than the original run because NBC did not allow the Office, a comedy show, to run for an hour. Hence, were forced to cut some things out on NBC and show them on Netflix.
For people who haven't seen the ending to this prank. Dwight plants the beans, and after he walks away jim comes out with a pallet of full grown bean plants, and swaps the pots.

@@nsq2487 james franco collects random stuff and so dwight brought him up so to Ryan it would feel like a missed opportunity if he didnt go for it. Also he can use the pictures like how he used Phyllis and Oscar on the brand label

The whole thing with Dwight's character is that he acts like a know-it-all condescending genius, but when you get down to it he is very naive, gullible, and impressionable.

i feel dwight has a telescope at home so the beans could possibly be something he does not own...so he falls for it on a chance they are...he does not care about the telescope he cares about selling it
Honestly, this video lacked the ending scene, where Dwight plants the beans and Jim instantly trades the vase for a full grown plant. In a way, the depths to which Jim goes to make Dwight's life more magical ARE more valluable than a 150 dollars telescope.
I wish they gave us an uncut version of all of Dwight's trades, that'd be really interesting.
I like Jim's ideaology here though; it's sort of the "you don't have to be faster than the bear, you just have to be faster than your friend" idea. He didn't have to be good at trades with everyone, he just had to be good at the trade with Dwight and Dwight would do all the work for him.
I love how Jim knew that Dwight was gonna do a swap-master trick to get everything he needed, then sat back and with a simple trick to play on his superstitions, Jim sat back and let Dwight do all the work for him then tricked him into a foolish trade.

i love how he's trying not to be mad about the telescope but you can tell he's secretly dying inside because of it because he KNOWS that the beans are a sham.
There's a scene at the end of the episode where Dwight has has planted and watered the beans, and after he walks away Jim comes around the corner with a handcart of full-grown plants to switch the pots.

When Jim looks at the camera after telling Dwight the story you can tell he has planted the seed. No pun intended.
Dwight is really smart, smart enough to understand what each person in the office would see as valuable, and use it against them to gain the most from his situation, but he’s also naive, he seems like sometimes he can’t tell what’s fantasy and what’s reality, which is why he traded the telescope. It illustrates how no matter how smart Dwight is and how hard he works to trade his way up to a telescope, Jim just takes it with minimal effort.
I actually feel so bad that Dwight actually managed to work his way up to a valuable telescope but Jim convinced him to give it up for worthless beans 😓 I wish he just let him keep it
