As a young lad in the late 1960s, my mum would buy a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie for us as a treat. In those days the company produced really good pies. My mum and dad's favourite was mince beef and onion. I have to say that today the company is a mere shadow of what it used to be. I would not touch a Fray Bentos product with a barge pole these days.

Afternoon Gareth! I spent nearly a decade working in Sweden and this 'food' would not be given to rats. As uninspiring as those ham and cheese toastie tiles from yesterday. A company whose quality has been declining steadily over recent years, do you think the real cost of proper grub these days, is forcing food companues to use the stuff that would normally hived off and sold as pig-swill, just to see if they can get away with the scam? Many thanks from all of us for forcing your taste buds to suffer this one on our behalf. VBW x

Frey Bentos. Just whisper it and (elderly) grown men will get teary eyed and nostalgic. Back in the day this was even slang for "good eats". You looked forward to a Frey Bentos Steak & Kidney Pie Inna Tin. Then they took all the meat out circa 2005. I hear they made a comeback (by putting the meat back in) but now have some 30+ ingredients in them. Wowzer.

@@EdsCanineAcademy As you imply, nothing wrong in moderation, but as a product it is still real food. Food is anything that provides nutrition and energy, regardless of what those nutrients are, the proportions of them, the nature of the food itself, or how good/bad it tastes. Ultimately everything we eat is a product - either a product of nature, or we harness those raw materials and do something with them. Sometimes they are heavily processed, sometimes they are simply combined and prepared, but all of it is real food.

I started buying supermarket home brand tinned meatballs in gravy earlier this year as a cheaper alternative when the price of Westlers tinned burgers started to go up. I only have them when i come home after a night out, usually with some microwave mashed potato. All the brands i've tried have very thin gravy, so i add some gravy granules to thicken it up and add a bit of flavour. I must say though that these meatballs with the Swedish style gravy look so un-appetising that i don't think even looking at them through slightly glazed eyes would tempt me to try them.

When you mentioned they cost just £1 i had visions of them flying off the shelves but, after watching your expression i think they`ll be sitting on the shelves till the end of the sell by date once the unsuspecting public try them thinking they`re getting a bargain. Fray Bentos always seem to get it wrong.

Well done, Gaz! I might have tried that... Not now!!
The black pack of meatballs in the chiller cabinet are £1 I put them in a tin of mushroom soup.
Aldi now do Swedish gravy granules, so I can see an experiment on the horizon

As a kid I used to love Campbells meatballs so about a year ago I tried to get a tin only to find the only type co-op stocked was princes - so I bought one, it turned out that the meatballs were chicken instead of beef and they were disgusting, they were consigned to the bin

Aldi need to sort out their stock levels before they consider introducing more products. In the last few weeks, they've been out of chicken tempura strips for at least a month, they were out of frozen vegetables and this week they were out of chips.

A massive indication that these were going to be inedible is the 15% CHICKEN on the label.
I suggest Fray Bentos stop calling them CHICKEN and relabel them as SQUASH BALLS !!!

Well I am shocked at the low quality food that these manufacturers are putting out for human consumption 😮. But saying that they were serving something like this in Egypt in an all-inclusive hotel everyday lunch and dinner absolutely vile. I think the store cupboard was piled high with tins of Fray Bentos out there 😂🤮. Thank you once again for saving me money and my taste buds.lol😁. Just to say Aldi does some fresh ready cooked meatballs in the chilled section and they are good quality and high meat content with 81%pork. They are next to the German frikadellens in the fridge.👍

As a student in the 90s I ate quite a few Fray Bentos pies. They were very decent back then. Seems standards have dropped a lot over the years.
How can chicken meat balls only contain 15% chicken?!!
Do Lidl still do those pork and beef meatballs in tomato sauce that they sold in the early to mid 00s? Came in a blue tin. Used to eat a lot of those when I lived in the UK.
