I agree.I went to M & S food hall in Doncaster a week ago and walked out empty handed first time ever. I object to paying their now exorbitant prices AND smaller portions. I normally spend quite a bit when I go albeit not on a very regular basis due to their higher prices but nicer quality. Until now! Shame I doubt Ill be going again as I expect with many others. Youre proving my point in the two M & S pies/pudding. Thanks for your input and good down to earth honest reviews.
I think a lot of businesses (not just M&S) are being greedy and increasing their profits under the disguise of the cost of living crisis. If more ppl were like you and refused to buy overpriced goods then I’m sure prices would fall.
Another great review. Fully agree with your opinion. 200g should be pie weight and filling should be mean close to full. £3 for a pie that's half air just doesn't sit well even if it does taste great.
The e next to the weight means it has a tolerance. Different items/weight bands have different tolerances. It's unlikely to be exactly the weight stated, but look up the bands for different food types.
If you want a decent pie make your own, buy puff pastry or make your own shortcrust, add your filling of choice. Bigger and better! Love the pictures, especially the one of you, very talented girls!
Following Gareth’s channel has turned me further and further away from processed foods, it’s fairly simple and far more satisfying to make your own. My ‘go to’ TH-cam channels for pies are John Kirkwood and Mr. Paul’s Pantry.
Absolutely 👍 Plus, if you make your own, the possibilities are endless. I've made pies out of all sorts....... curries, roast dinner, full English breakfast, fish n chips & mushy peas, chilli con carne & pizza/burger ingredients, to name but a few 😏 Had a few fails (pasta dishes just do NOT work in a pie btw 🤢) but you can't make omelettes without breaking a few eggs 😉🤣🤣
Interested to hear this, as social media has been talking about M&S as if everything they touch turns to gold over the past few months. From ‘their veg lasts ten times longer than anyone else’ to ‘it’s actually just as cheap as the other supermarkets’. People are crazy. They charge FIVE POUNDS for an individual curry, eg madras - not some extra special range, just a bog standard curry. And you know what, it’s no nicer than one from Aldi, Asda or anywhere else. It’s amazing what some nice packaging and a nice shopping environment can do to your mindset
Im with you on "where is the filling" its happened with various brands over time, i want a pie with no fresh air layer at the top but it seems hard at times even though a box shows a different story.
I agree entirely. There should be a small gap that allows a layer of hor air to form which cooks the underside of the pastry dry, but anything less than about three quarters full is just taking liberties.
Yes, the weight fiddling, it's niggling, isn't it. We all know things and food quantity weights per item are a lot, lot less than what they were. Also, the producers are now using much cheaper ingredients and you can tell. The Pie looked glorious after being cooked and cut open. Never had a Pie in a Bun, will have to give it a Go ! We call them Cobs in Leicester ! 😂 Top review, Gareth. Thank you 👍👏😉
I don't care for pies out of boxes and if I want one, I make it from scratch. But well done for checking this out and especially the weight, as manufacturers and supermarkets need calling out on what exactly they mean when they state a product weight. Yes, and where was the chicken, where were the mushrooms? This pie is no more than a comfort snack. I can buy an entire cooked chicken for £4.50! Never mind if it's your opinion. You are so right. Companies are making themselves rich on our lazy habits. But come on Gareth, it's really naughty eating yours in a muffin! 😄
Agree with you so much Gaz about being short changed by suppliers. You should get what you pay for.. especially during hard times for many. Notice how the weight discrepancies are always under and never over
I just buy pukka pies generally. They're always on offer and are decent. £1.25 I'm paying at the moment. Always plenty of filling. Holland's are also a decent option when on offer. 75p at Tesco ATM I think I've just paid.
@@monicaduncan7109 Holland's pies are made about 3 mile from my house. They're not the best, but they're decent. They get extra points for being shortcrust pastry and not puff. You can usually get them for £1 or less too.

Should be called Mushroom Pie (with a bit of chicken) 🤦♂️. At least plenty of healthy vegetables. Went to Aldi today & brought one of their large frozen Chicken pies. Looking forward to eating that this week as the steak version is 😋😋😋. Top review 🤩
M&S - I think not. Plenty of supermarkets/shops to purchase goods from. This one was not value for money. However, thank you for reviewing the pie and saving us from an exepense. xx
You're spot on, Gareth. Everything seems to be shrinking in size and getting more expensive! Excellent review nonetheless- love to see you supporting British suppliers.
Yeah we are being ripped off constantly from every angle possible and always have been but lately it's like they are just pushing us to see how much we can take, also that sticker on the front says 'supporting British suppliers' unfortunately that isn't the farmers, these are just mere supply companies. If you want to support local farmers and businesses then buy from your local Butchers and Veg shops. I started this last year and the savings are UNREAL !!! Honestly. As a single guy I spend an average of around £100 per Month at the Butchers, they do various packs and mix and match things on their website and that lasst me more than the month and the Veg shop is usually a tenner a week. So my food for the month went from around £450 per month to around £200 ish by the time I buy condiments, bread, coffee etc from Aldi's, Honestly people look into it, freeze your meat and take out what you need in the morning (set a meat alarm on your phone) as I often forget in the morn 😵💫
Never worth 3 quid. More mushrooms.. because they are cheap! M&S should be ashamed. If they can't get the weight right, what's the chances of the rest of the information on the packet being right? Shocking for this company. Vote with your feet folks. Brilliant and honest review 👍

I'm going to buy some scales, then, when a product is underweight, i will return to store...Just getting fed up being ripped off. Nice vid, keep em coming.
Hi Gareth I agree with you that things are getting smaller and more expensive. We might need a magnifying glass to see items and a bank loan soon. Lol. 😆
Used to go to M&S as a treat because their stuff was all awesome, standards have slipped a bit amount wise but the taste is still there. Where do they keep costs down though ? A bit less filling ? Less flavour ? Less staff ? Less stores ?
Great review as always and spot on about the filling amount and especially the lack of chicken then the price Gaz you are spot on with your reviews keep up with the excellent reviews 👏👏👍👍
Nice set of scales and a lovely gift for you. If I make a chicken pie I put veg and gravy in as I don't like mushrooms. The pie was nice to look at for the pastry alone but the filling out me off. Another excellent video. Thanks Gareth

Try your own taste test and comparison. I did my own tomato soup a fortnight ago. No filming, just written notes, few photos. It does take a lot of work and effort. Gareth works a lot harder than we think. But he seems to enjoy it and not looking too bad.
Net weight should be just the contents of the package( the product ,in this case the pie alone)... gross weight would be the total weight inc packaging .
The corporations are making record profits. An economist was recently asked if the businesses have to keep raising prices to stay in business. The answer was NO. They will keep raising prices until the consumer says enough is enough and stops or cuts down on consuming their products.
To me for price and taste are Pukka pies. In Sainsburys this week they had individual Chicken & Mushroom pies for £1.50. And they were full to the brim inside with more gravy than m&s.
Great review again Gareth 👍👍. When you first took the pie from the box? I thought it was a nice size and it was going to be at least 9 1/2 out of 10. The lack of filling, especially chicken, made it between 1 and 5 in my opinion. It certainly was not worth £3 of anyones money. It's not like chicken costs a fortune, even with today's price hikes being what they are. 🥴🥴. When I occasionally have a pie, either chicken or steak, I get the Lidl or Aldi family pie which will last me two days at least. The cost is well under £3, so good value as well. Keep up the good work and keep the reviews rolling in.
I had one of these just last week and I completely agree with you Garerh when it comes to having not much filling..it was really delicious but why so little?...for three pounds you expect so much more. As always great video..keep them coming mate.
Just a little trick to save you putting food directly on to your scales. Put a small plate or bowl onto your scales and the zero it. It will the give you the exact weight of what is on the plate. Loved CUP EYES the snowman.😀
Sadly, this shrinkflation has been going on for years, and M&S are by no means alone, nor the worst. Pie, pastie, sausage roll and "savoury bake" fillings are getting smaller, less meaty and the pastry is getting thicker. I've also noticed that supermarket Scotch Eggs have smaller eggs rattling around inside their sausage-meat casings, and cheese pasties have less cheese and are padded out with cheaper ingredients like mashed potato and onion. Rip-off Britain, indeed.
Totally agree with all you say here. Very over priced for an individual pie and considering they are mass manufactured. Any bakers shop sells hot baked pies and also has many overheads and can't be buying in as much bulk quantity. The filling is also no more than a couple of spoonfulls. Poor really. Great review. Great mark up on these i think
At 3quid a pie if you eat a lot of pies I would invest in a pie maker. Buy puff pastry and portion it keep in freezer. Then when you have a chicken a joint what's left make a pie. Bit fiddly but it will be filled great show Gareth
Eh up Gazza hows tha doin. Work has got so busy lately. They never mentioned when I get to work I had to stay busy lol. Great video. Hope your having a cracking weekend. Taj
Unfortunately we are now living in rip off Britain. Food cost is ridiculous and doesn’t represent value for money across the board. Don’t think I’ve ever had a decent pie from a supermarket. Best to support your local butcher for pies
I used to buy the odd item in M+S but not for a long time! Aldi does the job just as well - although Aldi is no stranger to shrinkflation German ham is now half the content you used to get! [Italian holding up well!]
I don't mind if you miss me out Gaz... I'm used to it from the mrs! The weigh in is really coming into it's own now isn't it. You've always weighed the food and now showing what we're really losing. Cheers mate
Thank you for another brilliant video. M&S food is very tasty, but for the price of there food is very expensive. They should put more chicken in there pies. I always love your videos. 😊😊😊
Things like mushroom which is supplied dried will be listed as the dried weight. But when water is added they then become a main ingredient. Just a way of manipulating the ingredients list.
Love the reviews Gareth and great channel and content..personally, I think it’s just best to make your own…pretty easy and cheap to make and tons of vids on how…John Kirkwoods channel is a good place to start.
You've been done Gareth. Mushrooms are a lot cheaper than chicken. I won't be buying them for three quid. On another matter Imo you shouldn't answer every comment, just know we appreciate you doing g this.
Great vid. Got the same Heston scales, in fact I’ve had a couple, word to the wise don’t keep them in sunlight. Have you considered getting a Gousto box? I think they’re brill.
Ingredients - chicken bones. 1) Is this covering themselves in case a bone gets stuck in ones throat? 2) I'm getting suspicious about companies "padding out ingredients". So are bones being ground up to pad out the filling now. It's not a ridiculous idea as we are being told that bugs will be ground up and added to our food. 3) Under weight - People weighing food contents? - Nah, whose gonna do that? The bald Foodie Guy will - Hurrah. 4) Only 2/3 full. 5) £3 for that - forget it.
Gr8 vid as always m8, i agree with the shrink flation comment ..i,m from oldham, try a hollands meat & potato pie in an oven bottom muffin with brown sauce they're lovely...lol
When i used to work for a baker many a moon ago, weights and measures would fine for a loaf being under weight , The should not be allowed to get away with it.
Hi Gareth, if you’re in Aldi, see if they have the Kilmarnock pie in the shops in your area , we have them here in Scotland, they’re delicious so are Bells steak and gravy pies, come up and see us sometime and do a review, cheers mate 👍🏴
Yes, Gareth, you are allowed your opinion. Never let anyone stop you from saying what you think. We value your opinion and everyone is entitled to an opinion. Keeep up the good work. It's great that you're continuing to tell it like it is ❤
Again, the pastry looks okay mate, but I agree with you: the pie looks mostly pastry and mushrooms - both being really cheap ingredients for the manufacturer to use. The more expensive bit - the chicken - is obvious by it's absence. As nice as the pie may taste, paying £3 for a mushroom & pastry pie (the ingredients of which probably cost about 5p in the bulk numbers they're produced) makes it all a bit of a rip off to me. We're paying more and more for this sort of stuff at the moment, but getting less and less for our money at the same time. Good review again though - thanks. Regards, Dave
I read recently that the e at the side of the weight means estimated. So the pie you just reviewed was 200g e. It must be a bit if a getout for them. Thankyou for all of your honest and entertaining reviews!
The 'e' sign next to the weight means its an average weight because there is no way to ensure every individual pie is exactly 200g. However, I will admit that your pie is right at the limits of what's reasonable, really 10g should be enough imho.
M&S food always tastes nice but they have always been skingy on the fillings. Three seems a lot for a pie & I thought Greggs was getting expensive lol. Great video as usual but pie in a bun/muffin! I haven't seen that since my old army days.
Ohhh I do miss good Cumbrian food. Originally from the North Lakes but live in London now. When I visit home I always go to Cranston’s butchers for their unique Cumberland sausage. Never found one as good. Also fill up my ice box with a bit to bring back down. My London born girlfriend agrees it’s the nicest she’s ever had, and cockney girls are brutally honest.
I love your honest reviews, they sell you a well know name product that as you can see isn't good, and we shouldn't buy, making your own would be cheaper and tastier, well done for showing us👍
It's means with all the packaging a rip off. Really which makes me mad ,I really believe we must teach our kids to cook for themselves with all the shortages coming we will have less convenience foods,I am lucky I am 80 and born 1943 my granny taught me to cook by helping her she never wasted a thing could turn anything into a meal I taught both my kids to cook and of course they had cookery at school not so now I don't think,
The weight should be of the product not including the packaging. I make my own pies and they are always full to the top no underfilling of my pies be they steak, chicken or mince.
Honestly Gaz, you don’t have to apologise for not replying to every comment when you have so many followers. Most of the the content creators on TH-cam don’t! It’s near on impossible to do so as your channel is constantly growing. I’m sure the vast majority of your followers on here understand that and don’t expect a reply to every comment they add, I certainly don’t. If you reply to everyone, you’ll miss the one’s that you really need to answer! ❤️
I don't shop there but keep forgetting M&S do food. Only went there for jeans but didn't buy any because all the leg sizes are an inch short as they only do 33 inch length max and I'm 34.
Just been into ALDI this morning to pick up my usual loaf of HONEY SOAKED BLOOMER and its up AGAIN. Now £1.29, last week it was £1.25 and last year it was 99p. Supermarkets are all at it, sticking a few pence here and there and they think shoppers are not noticing it. Even my ASDA SHREDLESS MARMALADE up from 55p last year and now at 90p. Robbing bar stewards. All the supermarkets are at the ham thinking they have your welfare at heart. Load of tosh.
I wouldn't be surprised if they count the box in the nutritional info, that would reduce the fat content and increase the fibre, lol. The letter e next to the 200g means estimated weight I think.
The National Pie awards are held in my home town of Melton Mowbray. This year's supreme champion wa Brocklebys " Moo & Blue " made near Melton Mowbray. Can be ordered online. MOO ( Beef ) BLUE ( Stilton )
I would be contacting M & S to ask them if their pie weight is supposed to include the box, and send them your video as evidence, as I am sure the weight should be of just the pie, not the packaging. Trading Standards might also be interested in this.

I've also noticed that supermarket Scotch Eggs have smaller eggs rattling around inside their sausage-meat casings, and cheese pasties have less cheese and are padded out with cheaper ingredients like mashed potato and onion. Rip-off Britain, indeed.
E means average over the production run they are are allowed to do so under T1 rules thats legal under T2 limits it cant be sold
Cheers Mike great information 👍
How much would it cost you to make one from scratch, really no bull? (if you can afford another £3 why don't you do a M & S v Waitrose comparison)
Cheers Helen
I wonder if. due to meat shooting up in price. are manufacturers bulking pies out with veg etc and skimping on meat?
At 3quid a pie if you eat a lot of pies I would invest in a pie maker. Buy puff pastry and portion it keep in freezer. Then when you have a chicken a joint what's left make a pie. Bit fiddly but it will be filled great show Gareth
Cheers Di
Eh up Gazza hows tha doin. Work has got so busy lately. They never mentioned when I get to work I had to stay busy lol. Great video. Hope your having a cracking weekend. Taj
Cheers pal. Hope you're well.
what type of oven is it u used
Sage Dave
Unfortunately we are now living in rip off Britain. Food cost is ridiculous and doesn’t represent value for money across the board. Don’t think I’ve ever had a decent pie from a supermarket. Best to support your local butcher for pies
Yes can't beat your butchers
I used to buy the odd item in M+S but not for a long time! Aldi does the job just as well - although Aldi is no stranger to shrinkflation German ham is now half the content you used to get! [Italian holding up well!]
Absolutely Aldi or Lidel every time.
I don't mind if you miss me out Gaz... I'm used to it from the mrs! The weigh in is really coming into it's own now isn't it. You've always weighed the food and now showing what we're really losing. Cheers mate
Cheers Hoppers.
Thank you for another brilliant video. M&S food is very tasty, but for the price of there food is very expensive. They should put more chicken in there pies. I always love your videos. 😊😊😊
You're welcome
Mmmm, looks more like a Wigan kebab I had 55yrs ago✌️🏴
Hi, you were right about the weight. Net weight is the weight of the product, not the packaging. It was short measure.
Thanks 👍
You've been done Gareth. Mushrooms are a lot cheaper than chicken. I won't be buying them for three quid. On another matter Imo you shouldn't answer every comment, just know we appreciate you doing g this.
Yes not good is it.
Great vid. Got the same Heston scales, in fact I’ve had a couple, word to the wise don’t keep them in sunlight. Have you considered getting a Gousto box? I think they’re brill.
I find that ALL pies brought from the shops are badly lacking with filling !! I just make my own now Gareth you know what’s in em 👍
Good stuff
Ingredients - chicken bones.
1) Is this covering themselves in case a bone gets stuck in ones throat?
2) I'm getting suspicious about companies "padding out ingredients". So are bones being
ground up to pad out the filling now. It's not a ridiculous idea as we are being told that
bugs will be ground up and added to our food.
3) Under weight - People weighing food contents? - Nah, whose gonna do that? The bald
Foodie Guy will - Hurrah.
4) Only 2/3 full.
5) £3 for that - forget it.
Gr8 vid as always m8, i agree with the shrink flation comment ..i,m from oldham, try a hollands meat & potato pie in an oven bottom muffin with brown sauce they're lovely...lol
Sounds great!
Thanks for the tip!
M&S pies don’t taste great anyway, I thought the weight given isn’t supposed to include packaging ? Correct me if I’m wrong
Would you review the new chicken cheesy bean nuggets in asda
I would pay a pound more for extra filling because the M & S taste and quality is always good.
Yes tasted good. 😋
@@BaldFoodieGuy Have you got a PO Box number as I can’t see it on your website ?
Yes, Gareth, you are allowed your opinion. Never let anyone stop you from saying what you think. We value your opinion and everyone is entitled to an opinion. Keeep up the good work. It's great that you're continuing to tell it like it is ❤
I appreciate that!
You're welcome 😊
For 200g the Tolerable Negative Error is 4.5% I.e 9g, so the pie should weigh at least 191g to meet the regs. 🤬
As Catherine Tates “Nan” would say regarding the weight “ what a f$%€ing liberty….!” 😂
Haha
Ohhh I do miss good Cumbrian food. Originally from the North Lakes but live in London now. When I visit home I always go to Cranston’s butchers for their unique Cumberland sausage. Never found one as good. Also fill up my ice box with a bit to bring back down. My London born girlfriend agrees it’s the nicest she’s ever had, and cockney girls are brutally honest.
Sounds great!
Ain't the big E a edtimsited number meaning correct me if I'm wrong Gareth please do
Could be, still not good is it though.
@Bald Foodie Guy I know however that's how they cover themselves that's if the big e means that ,watching comparison vid now
we're having lancashire hot pot today...home made , proper home cooking .great post as usual G thanks !!
Hope you enjoy
Hi Gavin, Trading Standards would probably take an interest in the weight difference between stated weight and actual weight, prior to cooking.
Yes. They would say it was correct according to the weights and measures act. Look up what the e symbol means next to weights on food.
Just wonder what flavour enhancers are hiding in the small print
I love your honest reviews, they sell you a well know name product that as you can see isn't good, and we shouldn't buy, making your own would be cheaper and tastier, well done for showing us👍
Thank you!
It's means with all the packaging a rip off. Really which makes me mad ,I really believe we must teach our kids to cook for themselves with all the shortages coming we will have less convenience foods,I am lucky I am 80 and born 1943 my granny taught me to cook by helping her she never wasted a thing could turn anything into a meal I taught both my kids to cook and of course they had cookery at school not so now I don't think,
Good point
The weight should be of the product not including the packaging. I make my own pies and they are always full to the top no underfilling of my pies be they steak, chicken or mince.
Cheers pal. Can't beat homecooking
Cumbria kebab 🤣🤣, used to love a sausage roll buttie when I was getting home from the pub when I was 16/17 lol
Agree with you. I think a rip off! I do not like the addition of Chicken Bones. I would not give them to my dog. x
Only pies I buy now are from local organic butchers crammed full and tasty
This is peak hangover viewing lol
Brilliant review as always not had a pie in a butty for years I fancy one now
What’s your favourite pie
A good meaty one 👌
Honestly Gaz, you don’t have to apologise for not replying to every comment when you have so many followers. Most of the the content creators on TH-cam don’t! It’s near on impossible to do so as your channel is constantly growing. I’m sure the vast majority of your followers on here understand that and don’t expect a reply to every comment they add, I certainly don’t. If you reply to everyone, you’ll miss the one’s that you really need to answer! ❤️
No worries
Spot on.
@@Darren-ny5du Me too. But even he only acknowledges, he rarely replies.
oh god no one should expect a reply from the creator , most of us make a comment for others to see and reply to share our own experiences and ideas
@@Darren-ny5du Yes, I’m sure your right. Content producers with a large number of subscribers (friends) can’t be expected to reply to every comment.
Everything seems to be smaller. Same tins but less or waterier filling. Less taste as well
I've been told that if a product has an e for estimated, it can be up to 40 grams short.
I’m from Ulverston and when I was young occasionally we had pie with soup over the top . Have you ever tried that?
X
Cheers
I don't shop there but keep forgetting M&S do food. Only went there for jeans but didn't buy any because all the leg sizes are an inch short as they only do 33 inch length max and I'm 34.
I'm looking at your air fry oven jealously. Might save for one myself but would take me ages.
A bit like a Wigan Kebab but you get more for your money in local Pie Shops rather than the chains
Definitely
Have you ever done a pork pie contest ?, all the ones i have seen are full and soooooooo tastey....apart from the Lidl ones i am afraid
I've not. I've reviewed them. Done a few short videos on them.
Stick to the old faithful's. Hollands 4 pies for £4 of 3 lots for £10 That's 12 pies for a tenner at Iceland.. Beats 3 quid per pie any day.
7:50 ⛄ lol, spilt my tea....
183 grams that is an insult Gaz. Why can’t we get the full weight. Still such an incredible video, that’s just the best
'Ey, nowt wrong wit' plenty 'o pies mucka....!!!! 😋😋😋
So good
I wouldn't be surprised if they count the box in the nutritional info, that would reduce the fat content and increase the fibre, lol. The letter e next to the 200g means estimated weight I think.
The National Pie awards are held in my home town of Melton Mowbray.
This year's supreme champion wa Brocklebys " Moo & Blue " made near Melton Mowbray.
Can be ordered online.
MOO ( Beef )
BLUE ( Stilton )
I would be contacting M & S to ask them if their pie weight is supposed to include the box, and send them your video as evidence, as I am sure the weight should be of just the pie, not the packaging. Trading Standards might also be interested in this.
Cheers Rea
