i like the square clamped to the piece to hook the tape on. that never occurred to me and i have gotten to relying on clamps and a square quite a bit working on my projects. i have a table saw but will often use the circular saw when ripping boards. i clamp a guide board on the piece to be cut then just make sure the saw base stays in contact with the guide board.

    Hey Scott,
It's good to hear from you again, and I'm glad you finished your job. Where are you located, that style of the house looks similar to New Orleans homes? I did not forget about covering rake crown; I just have a lot going on and my wife wants other things completed before I tackle my cathedral ceilings.
    Happy Labor Day!

To pull measurement, try sliding your board flush with the edge of the saw table and hook your tape on the table instead of the board.

      Hi Sixty grit
That is a good suggestion and it may work well on shorter boards because you are able to see if the joint is even with the edge of the table, it won't work with long boards because you cannot see if you are aligned. This method has never failed me and it will give you a proper measurement every time.
      Thanks!

Paul - I enjoy your videos and glad I subscribed, but I have a question concerning the spring angle measurement. In this demo, it looks like you were measuring to the outside of the molding - I thought it was to be done to the inside. This wouldn't matter if the 'lip' of the molding was the same on both sides, but that may not always be the case. Which is correct? Thanks!

      Hi, John
That is a good question. Most crown molding comes with 45 45 or 38 52 spring angles. This is why the crown chart only references these 2 spring angles. Using a square is a quick method for determining the spring angle and it really doesn't matter where you measure from. If the numbers on your square are even, you have 45 45, if they are uneven, chances are the spring angle is 38 52. The proper way to determine it would be with an angle finder or protractor. Angle finders are calculated by supplementary angles, meaning the sum of 2 angles equals to 180 degrees. Your spring angle is determined by complementary angles, meaning the sum of 2 angles equals 90 degrees. Example: If you get a reading on your angle finder when you measure the angle of your crown and the reading is 135 degrees, you will subtract that number from 180 and you will have 45 degrees. This means that your spring angle is 45 45 for that crown. If you get 128 or 142. from your reading, the spring angle is 52 38. I hope this helps. PS. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment on my video.
      Have a good day!
      Paul

      Hi Alex,
Believe me; I'm not perfect by any means, and I appreciate any feedback. I looked back on the video, and I am not sure what you are what the problem is. Can you specify what was improperly said and done?
      Thanks!
