  • The technique of working wet on wet, along with the incredible variety of effects this creates, is what makes watercolour so unique and so different form other mediums.
It is not necessarily complicated but it does take good amount of practice and play, time with brush in hand, to really get a feel for how the pigment and water feels in the brush, how wet the paper is in any given area, and then the relationship between these two factors.
In this short video I give you a quick run through of my own language, approach and watercolour process whilst painting a red panda.
Lots more on this wet in wet technique to come.
If you are interested in diving much deeper into this technique, plus trying out loads of tutorials and tons of other techniques and principles, please do consider checking out my school of Watercolour.

Gorgeous painting. Love the vibrancy of colors and the perfect balance of soft and hard edges. Very inspiring. Thank you Tom.

This so great! I love how loose you paint. How do you keep your paper wet once you've added your first wash, and are starting to add thicker consistency paints? I live in a very dry area and it dries super fast. I can use a spray bottle but get many blooms. ( where you call damp into damp- my paper is usually dry)

Thanks so much!!:) yes tricky ...particularly when drier climate! The uk more often than not has perfect watercolour weather (damp haha!!).....that said, I work with baohong 100% cotton which stays wet a long time (some papers dry noticeably quicker in exactly same painting session!)
Beyond that, yes a mister/Surat bottle. If you are getting lots of blooms or issues you maybe spraying too much in fircwhat you want. I find once it’s at that demo stay a very light list every few minutes or so keeps it at that stage....it feels like you’re not doing anything and then spray more on (which becomes to much water then)
Beyond that a few other tricks which are more work, but do yield good results: soak the back of paper and then stick to a non absorbent board like Perspex..and/or totally wet the front too...
A technique o know one of my students uses for long period wet in wet she got from Michael Soloyev which I think is to actually completely disk the entire paper before sticking it down. Let it dry off a bit then get to work (this my not be exact approach) because the paper fibre is wet and soaked inside it stays workable along time
      Hope that helps :)

Oh i love this so much. Its magical. I love the use of what i think is the lavender opaque for some of the lighter shadow, it has such a special effect. I love wet into wet, but got to practice my timings still. This tutorial is on my list to do. I hope i do it justice. Thank you for sharing your special talent and all your tips and teachings 🙏
