  • Hello, I'm Lynda Norman, a watercolor artist in the beautiful Okanagan Valley of British Columbia. In today's video, we're diving into the intuitive nature of watercolor, perfect for those of you who may struggle with the looseness of this medium. I'll guide you through a fun and freeing process-applying rich pigments, using saran wrap to create unique textures, and enhancing your work with micron pens for added definition.
    If you've ever felt hesitant to let your watercolors flow, this video is for you. Together, we'll explore how to embrace the unpredictable beauty of watercolor, turning simple pigment applications into stunning, textured art pieces.
    What You'll See:
    Intuitive Techniques: Letting the watercolor guide you, creating art that's as unique as it is beautiful.
    Texturing with Saran Wrap: Discover how this simple tool can add depth and character to your paintings.
    Defining with Micron Pens: Learn how to bring out the details in your watercolor pieces, adding a new layer of interest and sophistication.
    Versatile Art: Whether it's a greeting card, a framed piece, or a bookmark, these techniques can be adapted to suit your creative needs.
    Join me on this journey of artistic discovery, and let's see what beautiful creations unfold! If you enjoy this video, please subscribe to my channel or visit me at boundarystudio.com.

    Your process reminds me of a little workshop that I used to do with people that I called Painting With the Fairies. This may seem a “stretch” for some, but this is actually working with all of the elements: pigments in the paints and cotton paper = earth; water; air as the paints are spreading and drying; and fire because after putting the plastic wrap over them we would put them out on a table in the sun for a while = fire. The simple intent of offering to co-create with the elements which have their own consciousness produces some Amazing results! I would suggest not coming to any conclusion for several days because as the paintings dried deeper over time, changes would occur. So fun to try and pigments can be also be put on with a dropper, and dropping a bit of gold is magical. 🧚‍♀️🧚‍♂️

      @@jillharper7456 It could also be your fear expressing itself. Or who knows. If you find faces that make you afraid & it’s not artwork you want to keep, try safely burning the paper to rid yourself of them. You might find it helpful to your mind & spirit to write down your fears, anger, worries etc on the page too & get rid of it all together. No harm in trying as long as you do it safely. And the mind is a very powerful tool that isn’t separate from the body. Anything you can do to put your mind in a stronger, calmer, happier place, will help your body. High level athletes learn how important the mind is in success, as well as looking after the body, but we somehow treat them as separate things. Cancer is a horrible, life changing disease, but I hope you get through the fight stronger & happier in the long run. My Mum was treated for breast cancer just over 12 months ago & is in remission, but still struggling with the emotional fallout because she’s just hoping life will go back to what it was before. But the fear & emotional impact needs treating just as much as the physical effects. Hope you’re getting plenty of support …/hug from Australia 💕

    I've picked up watercolor again, for the first time in about 30 years. It frustrated me so much, I just stuck with acrylic and oil. In my mind, I wasn't getting the natural flow and transparency with acrylic or oil. There are some things only watercolor can give. I also generally do photo realism, especially in graphite. My goal was to learn loose and transparent techniques. No matter what I tried over and over, it always ended up with ink. Made my attempts look too heavy. Now, I'm learning to scale it back. Watercolor doesn't require that much detail, which is hard to teach myself out of. This was a great video!!! I can let my inner child out and just put color wherever and let it do it's thing under Saran wrap. Oddly, I've done a lot of bisque projects using the same technique.
    I'm going to try this.

      Thank you! I prefer to let the painting dry naturally for the most part, sometimes touching puddles and wetter areas with a paper towel. Hi Linda, I absolutely love your water colouring. It’s one of my favourite mediums. If you have a picture of a big waggon out in the field, and the background is all green and the waggon is light colored. How do you paint the background first without getting it onto the waggon the waggon has many spokes and lots of little details and I didn’t want to cover it with liquid mask because it would take me forever.

    • @ArtistLyndaNorman
      @ArtistLyndaNorman  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks so much for watching and for your question.
      If you use greens for the background that are non-staining, you can keep your washes lighter in the area where your wagon and its wheels will be and if you've sketched your wagon, you could go in immediately with a 'thirsty' (barely damp) brush and pull the colour away from the wagon and the spokes. Then you can touch up the spaces in between by doing some negative painting to allude to the background and create shadows.
      I hope this helps. Perhaps I will do a video to demonstrate this later this fall.
      Hope this helps!

    That was wonderful! I love your calm demeanor and tips for new techniques. I love the interactions of the paints when wet and often am disappointed when dry. I will give the plastic wrap a go. Questions: I have heard that watercolour paper is too absorbant for alcohol markers so I have not used them before. Is hot pressed paper better than cold pressed for this reason? Do you put glass over watercolour when framing or leave them open?

    • @Harper.s_Art
      @Harper.s_Art 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      My experience is that alcohol ink markers work fine on watercolor paper (hot and cold pressed, not rough). You will find that hot pressed would work best for alcohol ink, or of course, you can use Bristol Smooth or “marker” paper.
      Traditionally, watercolors are matted and framed behind glass, optimally UV protectant glass. Being on disability, that’s not feasible for me, so I’ve explored. I still frame some, using thrifted glass and frames, but I’ve learned a different method of mounting them onto cradled wood panels. I flatten the paper as needed (iron over a pillowcase, or mist the back and weight under books for a day); then I spray the front with a UV protecting matte varnish spray (don’t brush it on, or you’ll reactivate all the pigments, ruining your work). Once that’s dry, I coat the back of the paper and the surface of the wood panel with matte medium (or you could use any archival glue), adhere paper onto panel, again lay wax paper down and a stack of books to make sure evenly adhered.
      Once dry, I coat with Dorland’s cold wax, let dry for 24 hours, then buff gently with a lint free cloth.

      @audralalonde6678 Thanks for watching and for your questions!
      I've not used alcohol ink markers so will defer to the response @Harper.s_Art has given.
      As for finishing/framing, once the painting is completed and dry, I spray on 2 light coats of Krylon brand Kamar Varnish followed by 2 or 3 coats of Krylon's Gallery Series UV Archival varnish. this gives great protection (can be dusted with a damp cloth) and keeps the pigments looking vibrant. I rarely use glass as it's costly to get the non-glare, UV-resistant glass - and I really don't like how my paintings look behind it.
      I usually place my paintings behind a mat and then pop them into an inexpensive frame - I've found that most folks who purchase a painting will want to have it re-framed to suit their decor. Occasionally, if I am preparing my work for an exhibit, I will have my local framer shop custom cut the mats and frames.
      And, again, as @Harper.s_Art has suggested, another nice option, depending on the size of your painting, is to mount your painting on a cradle-board and finish with a cold wax from Dorland’s or Gamblin, or spray with the varnishes mentioned above.
      Hope this helps!

    Thank you! This is very inspiring! I have found myself doing similar work recently, using watercolor after many, many years away from it. I have a question for all of you experienced watercolorists...is paper buckling a problem? I noticed Lynda handled this issue by placing a book on top while the pieces were wet. What if you don't want to do that? Do you pre-stretch your paper?

    • @jillkent6134
      @jillkent6134 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      If you use 300gms or 140lb water colour paper then just flattening with a few books when finished will be enough. If you use thinner paper or loads of water I recommend taping your paper down to a board first with artist masking tape.

      Thank you @jillkent6134 - I agree that taping the paper to a solid surface is likely the best option - and I definitely would not try this on anything less than 140lb/300gsm paper.
      I used the little book for two reasons - first, I wanted the plastic wrap to have good contact with the paper so the impressions were more pronounced, and secondly it certainly helps keep the paper flat if you leave it on until it is completely dry.
