- We're moving back home after 10 years in NYC to fix up a 1914 schoolhouse and turn it into a modern home! You can see more photos + story over on our IG. :) / schoolhousehomestead
This video shows the progress we've made as of May 2023. We. Finally. Have. WINDOWS!!! We ordered these back in August of 22 after about 400 emails back and forth with the company. By far the most expensive thing we’ve ever bought, and the thing I’ve been most excited about since we got a new roof. This schoolhouse restoration project will make you lose a lot of sleep but holding strong that it will all be worth it. :)
All the old windows would make a cool greenhouse.
That is what I said. Great minds think a like
You are living my dream. There is an old public school near me from 1924, that hasn't had students in decades. I think it has 3 or 4 classrooms. I would love to buy it, and fix it up as a home/studio space.
This is great. Any updates? It’s been 4 months I’m dying! I would watch weekly videos! Keep ‘em coming! ❤
going to work on one soon! We just moved back with the kids and things have been crazy!
I love it, all the light
I'm glad you're redoing the doors. Doors are not made today like they were years ago. I live in a house built in 1924, with original doors.
Those upstairs windows with transoms have the same upper and lower sash grid patterns as the ones we had installed when our home was built. We wanted long windows that nearly went from floor to ceiling. Since our ceilings are a normal height off the floor we didn't have room for transoms. Really love your long windows!
My father was born in Franklin and went to that school
In 1970, my classmates and I exited our town’s old elementary school as the last class to utilize it. The new school was ready for students. So, we were the last students no NOT attend the new elementary school. What amazing character the old building had. What horrible foresight our local board of school directors had. Within weeks of our exit, that old building was demolished and the property graded over. It still looks exactly as it did the day after the old lot was cleared of debris. The old building was probably too large to renovate into a home, but it was historic. I believe the directors had it torn down before anybody could fuss. Nice job with your project(s).
Im glad to see that you're framing in for insulation on all of the exterior walls.
I'm even more glad to see that you're replacing all of your electrical lines. That would be my biggest fear with an old structure. Wiring was sketchy at best in those days.
What a working te a man!! Wife has been so great with all of her help too plus kids !! GOD BLESS , ,& WATCHED ON REAL TV TH-cam !! CONGRATTS
Huge progress, and I love the new windows, especially those with top sections.
Thank you!! I was nervous about them but I think they might be perfect now!
My dream is well I always wanted to do a fixer-upper like yours . The only thing I’m missing is a man with lots of money.😊
when planning make sure you plan for your future. make space available for possible elevator or lift
Lots of work & progress✨
Thanks for the update--there are (or were) so many of these old school buildings all over the Midwest. The one my mom attended was torn down, and the one my dad attended has been saved as a museum/community center.
Stacie love you saving some history of Indiana.
I love the honoring of the old school chalkboard with your matte black backsplash! How cool!
Congratulations on the baby! I’m not sure how you’re doing all of that and the school reno at the same time but you sure are. All the best!
Did you consider radiant floor heat? The high ceilings and large rooms make this an ideal candidate imho.
I love this ambitious project and cant wait to finish the binge.
All my best.
such a good idea to "honor" the missing blackboards with black tiles. the entire project is amazing. congratulations on a successful project. i love your drawings for you plans.
I bet those windows cost a fortune, they are perfect and look like the older ones, so I think you made a good choice. Loving these. Peace!
How great to catch your update this morning. You made such progress on a lot of fronts and those windows look amazing. I hope you'll continue with regular updates, I look forward to these. Have fun!
Thank you so much!! Will try to keep making the updates for sure.
The design now looks like the "English Perpendicular." Beautiful.
I bought an old house and had to replace 9 windows right away....the cost made my jaw drop for sure! The next surprise was the cost for Curtains for all of those windows! I still need to replace at least nine more windows but don't even dare at this point. Yikes!
I'm sure your windows are costing more than the building, by the time you're done. Loving this journey we're taking with you. 😊👍
The kitchen space is AWESOME!
Amazing. It's like a giant loft or multiple giant lofts. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing work
More please!
I can’t wait….looking good
So glad to see this update!!! What an exciting project!!
So exciting for you to see the work being done!
This is precious. Schools have always felt like home to me.
Just saw you on Instagram and instantly came to TH-cam, as I vastly preferencer long format renovation videos. Really like your series and I can't wait for the next episode 😊
thank you so much!!
Yay for the windows! 🎉
TFS the update ❤
The new windows really showed off your progress when I drove by in September. It's looking wonderful!
Wonderful and great work
I'll be interested to see what your heating costs actually turn out to be. I feel like you may be underestimating the benefits of thermal mass, especially with those high ceilings. Do those transom windows open providing air flow for heat to escape in the summer? Fascinating project. Hoping you do a video breaking down the numbers.
The transmission will help with heat dispersion in the summers...😊
I cant wait it to be finished, great progress so far. 🎉
So fun to watch the progress!! It’s going to be so cool and unique
Love how things are coming together. I cannot wait to see all the progress you share with us in the future.
What a project. Curious to hear about insulation and heating. Geothermal, heat pump and underfloor heating?
I 2:51 can't wait to see what you do for the "homestead" part of your journey. I Interested to know if you're going to have farm animals, how much acreage the home has.....
I love what you're doing and sharing it. Thank you
Is the doorbell going to be hooked up to the school bell?
I can’t wait to see the finished work. It’s going to be gorgeous. Thanks for the updates.
Your school looks like the first school I taught in located in Ohio! I have fond memories there. My first room was kindergarten in the basement back of the left side. The second room was 1st grade in the right rear upstairs.
Omg, I’d love to do an old church one day😊
This is looking great!
Way less drafty now.
Just an idea and maybe you have already but if there was any way to get pictures of rooms when it was a school you could have one in ever room
I have one picture inside the school! But I need to go back to the museum to see if there are any more!
this is so flipping cool!
Beautiful windows. Did you go with vinyl or aluminum double glazed windows? I heard that vinyl is a better insulator, but aluminum is more durable and is recyclable. Thank you.
Found you on Facebook and I am now invested in the journey.
Please consider putting solar for your electricity of the schoolhouse. Maybe can get a corporate sponsor
We definitely have that on the list to figure out. We can't put panels on the new roof because it will void the warranty, but we're figuring out other solutions. First step, get some plumbing in the house... then get some solar haha.
Super cool
I just recently found this is there an episode five have you been able to move in yet?
No solar? Wow how are you going to heat this beauty in the Indiana winters?
How many bedrooms does this have? I would love to live in an old building like this
Three bedrooms for the kids and only one bathroom? 🤔
Did you say the windows cost more than the actual building? 😳
That’s gotta be 50k in windows!
Love watching this. Isn’t 9000 sq feet allot for a single family.
Why did you not forward think about accessibility for you later years? You should definitely make it ADA accessible for your future selves
We are with the garage!
Quick question: you walk in from the garage, where do you put you coats and gloves and boots?
Are they triple insulated windows or only two glass windows without insulation?
Small bed room kind of cheap size for kids
What? No indoor theater or bowling alley?
It looks great, but I don't see ductwork .
Not in yet! Actually working on it over the next couple weeks
Are you going to rent out some portions of it? Its huge for 4 people. Just wondering
We are going to be building an apartment for parents eventually! Beyond that, I'm not sure yet! One step at a time getting it livable first.
@@Schoolhousehomestead well done 👏 to you. I will be following your journey. All the best to you and your dear family
So what happened to the chalkboards?? Do you know??
Actually I just learned from an old newspaper article! They took them out and used them in the newer local schools.
Once you’re living there I doubt you’ll ever use the word cramped.
I came across your last video and have now watched all 4. Following you on Instagram as well. I love that you are doing this.
Thank you so much!!
