    Welcome to the Letterman TH-cam Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. The language may strike you as quaint & flowery, the clothing comically lacey & ornate - but that’s how things were back in this colorful and now bygone era.

    I went to Hollywood for the first time not long after this aired; the one celebrity I saw was. . . Florence Henderson, filming a commercial at Universal Studios, so Dave was on the mark here (and RIP to the lovely and talented Ms. Henderson).

    There was a few times where Biff Henderson was looking for "celebrities" around New York. Among others, he managed to find Liza Minnelli, Don Rickles, Ryan Seacrest, Weird Al Yankovic, and Lennox Lewis, among others. Those were some interesting segments.

      Yeah, he used to do a ton of them. Usually the best part of the show. Then he suddenly stopped, and would send out Rupert Gee or someone instead. It may have coincided with that foiled plot to kidnap him by those guys in Montana. He, or the network, or the insurance company, may have put a stop to it.

      I missed most of the early Dave stuff and most of my life was the CBS era Dave. While most people were apparently watching Jay Leno, I personally thought Dave got funnier and funnier. His rants about the boneheads at NBC and long meandering discussions about playing one bar of an Eagles song were classic. I can still watch that stuff and laugh, a lot of other comedy, not so much.

    • @jedijones
      @jedijones 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@rocketreindeer I became a huge fan of his in the late '80s as a kid. I remember the incredible fanfare and publicity when he left NBC and started the CBS show. He was king of the ratings for a while at least. I was so angry about Leno, and really thought his show sucked, even though he had been a decent guest host on Carson before.

    • @rocketreindeer
      @rocketreindeer 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jedijones Yeah totally. My best friend's dad would only ever watch Jay Leno, and every night it was this big ritual where everything stopped so he could watch it and eat ice cream or some sh**. So I saw many miles of Jay added up over the years. Somehow I can barely remember anything from Jay's show, even though he's naturally funny, but everything from Dave. My other buddy told me Dave is natural, and most of the other shows like Jay were more canned and artificial. Seth Meyers can still fall flat, but he's the only one today I sort of look forward to because he constantly breaks and roasts his writers for writing bad jokes and stuff. Ha ha. I didn't like him then found him funnier since Covid.

    • @jedijones
      @jedijones 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@rocketreindeer I don’t really watch the shows now. Some of the clips from Colbert I’ve seen on TH-cam were okay. I just can’t believe no one is carrying on Dave’s tradition of making stars out of normal people in the crew and out in the city. Because everything is so focused on celebrities, there is no sense of spontaneity.

    • @rocketreindeer
      @rocketreindeer 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jedijones Yeah bro, I totally agree. They all have their moments, but it's not enough to look forward to. Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel can be hilarious, but their shows are mostly canned. Colbert has a great band. The only one I've grown to like is Seth, who I always thought sucked before. His skits can fall flat, but the "news of the week" monologues can be actually hilarious. Especially when he screws up or blames his writers for doing terrible jokes. Basically when it's him talking it can be super funny, and Amber Ruffin and a couple others can also be ridiculous and funny. When it's all overly directed down to every second, like you said, the spontaneity is tied down and it's just not funny. All the "ordinary" guys with Dave were hilarious, even if they were like Rupert and didn't think they were remotely funny. The whole organism of the show was funny. I just realized I said "funny" like 9 times describing how things are unfunny. Colbert has these slick cartoons and stuff and they're creative but not hilarious. "EHH!" But you may find an occasional dose of Seth funny, but not their skits, which still are also mostly kinda "EHH."
