cost equivalent to 1 ton of coal is a cord of wood and about 50 to 70 gallon of fuel so I get wood for free but coal you dont split carry 3 times...bla bla grandfather always said woods gonna warm you at least 3 or 4 times before you even put it in the stove!! that's a fact I've lived with since I was 8 years old!! I'm 41 now!!

I disagree. Venting in outside air I think would be greatly beneficial. Sure the temperature is low but wouldn’t that mean denser more oxygen rich air? Also regulating the intake to give the home a neutral pressure would also be cool to stop any kind of draft?

Dave, I have a used Hitzer 30-95 coal stove and just installed it to replace my woodstove. The problem I'm having is it won't keep a steady burn of firebox temperature. The flue is a 14 foot straight run. I have a manometer which is showing .06 measurement and magnetic thermometers to monitor the box temp and the flue temp. What can I do to keep a consistent amount of heat? the flapper on the back for air inlet is set a position 8-9. The stove has a blower and when I turn it on to its lowest setting the box temp falls off quickly and since I'm new to coal stoves any advice would be helpful.

Burning coal for 50 years ,bottom line is you will mother your coal stove twice a day 30 mins each to maintain your coal stove !
Above advice is based on a manual draft stove no thermostat

Thanks for your input. The new models come standard with automatic damper control, which is helpful to obtain efficiency and long burn times.

A keystoker he's kind of like running a sewing machine 7 adjustment knobs and terribly finicky. Their instructions are terrible, and now they've started TH-cam they don't seem to be that much better. I hated the machine for two years, until I finally got all the ghost out of the machine. Now I love it regardless of the high maintenance level, but am very weary to recommend it to anybody knowing that they will be on the phone with me for days asking the 400 questions that come along with trying to get this machine to run consistently.

really it's not that bad. i have a 90K, there is a little bit of a learning curve. adjusting the stroke of the stoker and the air intake are the 2 most important adjustments. previously i had a pellet stove and those things are JUNK
