Hi Lindsay - I know the old audio had a LOT of echo. I recorded this in a different room. My oldest moved out and I'm set up in his old room, but it's empty and so lots of echo. I have to watch that because it's really a distraction. Thanks for the note and for taking a look, "buff titanium", pretty niche. :-)
Thank you! Also thank you for not spreading the fake news that buff titanium isn’t a white! This is a great video and I’ll def share it w folks. Also unlike titanium white (which is more expensive) because buff titanium isn’t a super stark white it’s easier to use because you don’t need to keep the poured paint or dried half pan as super clean as you do with a titanium white (don’t accidentally have a little phthalo blue when you dip your brush in white titanium! 😭😭) And yes! It’s made even getting darker skin tones easier by adding opacity without adding a chalky look! I also started using open acrylics this year and buff titanium is great for getting tints.
100% Karia. As you know from Instagram I paint many types of people and like getting the tonal values closer by using buff titanium. Wow! Your quick little portrait of James Gurney is great!! I’ve only been watercoloring for a year and a half, but have used buff titanium for skin tones . It was one of my early Daniel Smith purchases. I was just scrolling on a site to get a variety of colors and for some reason it caught my eye. I prefer transparency, so I do go a bit easy when mixing the Buff Titanium with other colors. I’ll be watching you painting Mr. Gurney a number of times over! Have not seen him with a beard. Nice. Looking forward to painting with your ease sometime in the future. I’ve gotten a late start with watercolor and find your videos very helpful! Thanks for taking the time to share your talent😊
Hi Mary - I got a late start with watercolors as well. I was deep into my 40's before I even tried it out. I was oil painting before that and drawing mostly. One day I said, I'm gonna start and make as many mistakes as I can, so I can learn something about this crazy medium.
A great examination of the qualities of buff titanium, Marty. I've seen a few other artists mention this recently, so I guess it's definitely a good potential add-on to any artist's palette. It seems to work well in portraiture but I was interested when you mentioned it also works well in landscapes. It's the start of the month so I'm putting together a 'wish-list' of art products ..... which I'll order after I get my 'highest priority' order sent off to Total Wine for a month's supply of beer (well, I am British, after all!). I might then just drop a tube of the buff titanium into my art wish list, after seeing your demo. Incidentally, it was good of you to give a shout-out to James Gurney .... it's always nice when an established artist gives a helping hand to these young up-and-coming painters LOL :-) Well, thanks again for the video and you and your family stay safe - and Mrs Two-Legs, young Mr Four-Legs and I will try to do the same down here in Florida. I just made up my own fake bt by mixing titanium white and stuff, sepia and something, I forget. It worked for what I wanted at the time. Didn’t know bt was cheaper than tw, though. Shucks. Thanks for the info on where it comes from! I have a tube but ended up not loving it. Since it was gigantic (37 ml American Journey), I divided it into half pans and added some other tube colors so now I have a whole palette full of artist grade pastels that are amazing on toned or black paper 😍
Awesome job explaining, I had actually been wondering about this paint. I did kinda figure that it is probably a variation of titanium white, but I wasn't sure. Now this definitely looks like something that I could use very much, so thank you for letting me know. 😊

I use it as well sometimes as mixing colour, or just to tone down the white areas in a paiting as I often find the paper too white. at first I didn't really liked the colour but now I find it a good addition to my palet. it's a interesting colour.

I recently bought Warm Gray from Sennelier as a Substitute for buff titanium, I saw a review about it and realised how pretty vintage colors it made mixed with other paints! Didn’t knew it was made by rutile which I see often on my crystal collection 🤣
Warm grey has 4 pigments in it? Jeez. It's a wonder you don't end up with mud every time you mix it with something. Roman Szmal (order on Jacksons for world wide delivery) does a buff titanium full pan for a fraction of the Daniel Smith one and it's just the one same pigment so it makes much cleaner mixes, when you're ready to replace that horror.

I have seen you use paper plate lookalike as palette in several of your videos. I wonder if they are actually paper plates? Sorry for my silly question, I am a beginner 😅
I remember mixing a nice buff. I was trying to get a look like YT artist 'iraville'. But it was palette leftover in the mix, and I couldn't reproduce it. :-)
I've seen other people use buff titanium; but, that's one color that I've never even considered adding to my watercolor collection. I don't even have titanium white. Is that weird? My son recently started painting with oil paints and he has a huge tube of titanium white. I think his oil paints are M. Graham. I don't know if he can even get buff titanium. Did I hear you say something about rutile? I thought that the word seemed familiar and one of my watercolor pan sets has a yellow in it called Rutile Yellow.
Hi Donna - Absolutely yes on the Rutile and it's used in more than just buff titanium so that's probably what's in your Rutile Yellow. It's not weird that you don't have a titanium white, but I do use mine quite a bit. Also in my watercolor palette when I want to make something more opaque.
Hi, Nice history on buff. But probably not the best way to explain and demonstrate opaque quality of any paint. Just mark the paper with thick black lines and then paint over the lines. If the lines remain visible then the paint is transparent and if the lines are not visible then it means that the paint is opaque. Try it.

What your video demonstrated is how buff white BLENDS with other paints. Not how opaque it is. If someone is considering to buy buff white for its opaque quality, your video is not helpful in that regard. Also, do you think buff white gets more rusty as time goes after mixing with water? Because of the iron content?
@@danrazART I haven't noticed any rusty color over time, but my previous experience was with oil paints, so I'll have to keep an eye out for how the watercolor behaves. Also, I get you point about the additional demonstration of opacity and it's a fair one. Thank you!

I was long opposed to this colour but then I had a chance to get a tube (not DS) and I found that it is really useful! Even better than whites :)
