@@linksgarage1985 honestly the peace of mind knowing I’ve always changed the oil and serviced my car on schedule is worth the extra price of a brand new car vs used. @@joe28753 I feel exactly the same way! I keep my cars forever, so I don't care about this "depreciation" that everyone else seems so obsessed about. I bought both my Toyotas brand new, and I've personally performed all maintenance on them. Even if a used car has maintenance records, I still wouldn't trust it. There are enough stories out there of dealerships or quickie lube places claiming to change the oil, when in fact they didn't. They just take the customer's money and do nothing. Or they put 5w-30 in every car, regardless of what the manufacturer actually requires. Buying new is definitely worth it for peace of mind.

The OEM oil filter and clean oil inside makes it look like a dealer tried to sell the engine as well maintained. I get why the oil was clean though. The old deposits are so dried out they just couldn't wash out, I would assume every oil gallery and lubrication feature would be to clogged up to prevent any lubrication either.

It's not that unlikely that the oil change actually killed the engine by loosening up old crap that then clogged the engine. This is not so different to what happens when people get strokes due to clogging up of arteries. Sometimes it only needs some crap to break off somewhere on the blood stream and down it goes up the point when it can't go further.
The car would probably have needed multiple flushes over the course of days or weeks to safely dissolve whatever crap it has built up so far and then start with really low revs at first. But it's also likely that it would have leaked oil like mad afterwards.

The motor had just over 100k miles on it.
When I pulled the valve covers it looked just like that! I bet it's just like Wax.
Penzoil and Quakerstate were designed for Race Engines. They are PARAFFIN BASE! They are great for Race Engines that were never built for everyday driving.
With the multiple heat and cooling cycles the paraffin will separate and build up in areas where the oil moves slower.
Like the top end of the motor.
I had to literally dig and scrape the wax build up out of the 351c heads to rebuild them.
So even with regular oil changes if you're running these oils from the Lube Jockey places you can get the Wax Build up.
Hope this helps shed a little light on what possibly created this failure in the first place 👍😎

Had a 1979 Dodge Power Wagon which I purchased used in 1989. The 318 engine in the truck looked like this when I took off the valve covers. I scraped off the chunks of sludge with plastic and wood utensils, the best I could. I then vacuumed the chunks and stuff out as I didn't want them running through the engine. I then put some Marvel's Mystery Oil (MMO) in a spray bottle and sprayed/soaked the hell out of the mess. Then I put in new oil with a 20% mix of MMO and 80% engine oil. I religiously changed the oil every 3000 and replaced it with the 20/80% mixture every time. One year later, I took off the valve covers, and things looked great. Just the normal varnishing one would expect in an older engine.

Oil is literally the lifeblood of engines, changing it with quality oil and filter at regular intervals, (I do it myself at 3,000 miles,) can lead to many years and miles of reliable service.
I bought a new 83 Toyota pickup, 22R carb engine and auto trans. Drove for many years, only an alternator change and two water pumps, went for 340,000 miles and the odometer failed. Continued driving it for another few years, it was getting tired, but still reliable and minimal oil consumption, no smoke.

Those old 20R and 22R Toyota engines were the most reliable engines ever made. As long as they have oil and water in them, you couldn't kill them. They were like the inline six engines in American cars. (even though the Toyota engines are 4 cylinder) They just wouldn't die. I liked them, because you could adjust the valve clearances. Because of that, I have NEVER burnt a valve in those engines.

But my friend and his wife had it for about 7 or 8 yrs. He said the engine knocked & asked me if I wanted it. I said, sure. I could hear the valve lash was pretty bad so I pulled the valve cover. You couldn't even see the rockers, and the sludge had conformed to the inside of the valve cover like a jello mold. The pushrods come up through a wide open chamber in the head & block castings. When I pulled the pushrods out, there was a solid brick of sludge probably 18inL x 2inW x 6inDp with 12 small holes left by the pushrods. It still ran, but if you revved it up it began to knock. I pretty much just scrapped the car.

the heavy crystallization i have found in blocks where they just keep adding and do the 10k oil changes..
The old timers used to just fill the blocks up with kerosene and let em soak for a night or two then they tore into em
as it flushed all the crap out. I have seen where folks have added a qrt of kero as a flush.
but i am thinking if yah put a few qrts of kero in em then pull the distributor and primed the pump with kero it would flush alot. hmm
next tear down i might just have to try it. or hope someone else does first lol YT up up and away....

Had a friend who never changed the oil on his Mazda 323 until the check engine light came on and it would not pass the states emissions test, he had over 100,000 miles on it and just added oil to it. I guess this is not that uncommon.

I bought a 2015 f250. While doing the oil change I noticed inside the valve cover was full of sludge. I have never seen so much sludge… I’ll I’ve put about 8k miles on the truck in the last 3 months. I have done 4 oil changes. I’m gonna keep changing the oil ever 2k and see if it cleans up the truck runs strong for having 146k miles. I’ll let y’all know how long she goes

Purchased a non running F250 with a failed engine.
Found the same sludge from a lack of oil changes.
Engine wasn't even rebuild-able. Every moving part was unusable.
Obtained another engine to rebuild. 45k trouble free miles on that engine today.
