      You would like Dark and Darker. As is, it’s an extraction looter game with no story. They say that’s because they are trying to get the combat and game loop perfect, then we will see an actual campaign. Already hinted at some excellent writing. Best 20$ early access game I’ve ever gotten.

    So, thanks to this, I gave the Early Access Demo a try, and as someone who plays spellcasters, I'm pleased that the way to get/learn/find new spells is frankly, about the same way as in Arx Fatalis or even Underworld Ascendant. In that you could try finding the scrolls/tomes to learn the spells, or you can experiment with what you have.
    For example, the Douse Spell, if Splatter added in that last node (echo stone) He'd have gotten the opposite spell (Ignite) learned. Sadly, neither are very combat effective, but farther experiments have yielded more potent spells. Such as a rapid firing arcane arrow (drains mana quick though so be careful), and a spell similar to Burning hands from D&D. Later, with more stones and farther experiments, I found a similar lightning spells and an always useful Light spell.
    Granted, spells learned through experimentation are only revealed/learned after getting the minimum Intelligence first to cast them. Either way, I've always found this form of Spellcraft in games to be fun and interesting.

    • @TangiersIntrigue
      @TangiersIntrigue หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I like magic systems that allow for experimentation and customizing spells. It's also more immersive, in the sense that most spellcasters in any lore came up with different powerful spells that you end up using, and it's cool that you get to experiment and create your own like the in-lore casters.

    • @Bill_Garthright
      @Bill_Garthright หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Are there difficulty settings? I need an easy game, when it comes to 'real-time' combat.
      PS. I didn't like Arx Fatalis, but I don't remember why, right now. Is that the one where you had to move your mouse in a particular pattern in order to cast a spell? If so, that might be it. But I always like supporting indie developers, even if I've already got more games than I can play. :)

      @@Bill_Garthright If you didn't like Arx Fatalis, you probably won't like this. I've played a few hours now, and it's pretty much Arx. With that said, if the only reason you didn't like it was the spellcasting, then you'll be fine here. This still has the "combine words to find spells" system, where you need to find words/runes and then figure out the combinations for spells, but you don't have to draw them, you don't have manually do every cast (you memorize a few and can freely swap between them and cast them), and it just generally has less friction.
      The Arx spellcasting did have a very cool effect of forcing you to really remember you spells because you had to draw them in combat if you needed more than you could memorize. This was really stressful, but really fun when it worked (which isn't horrible with the Arx Libertatis fan mod). When it doesn't work it just feels really bad though. I don't know if there's a good way to get that system to work well. Maybe it could work with a pre-trained LLM trained on a whole lot of player inputs from testing. Doing it algorithmically is a really hard task.

      Thanks! To be honest, I don't remember why I didn't like Arx Fatalis. After all, that's been awhile, and I buy _lots_ of games. It just wasn't for me. It's all down to personal preference, after all, and I'm far older than the typical gamer.
      But I'll still take a look at this when it's finished. I like to support indie developers, anyway. Thanks for the reply.

The first area is incredibly large and well-designed. If the entire game is like that, this will be one of the best indie dungeon crawlers to come recently.

    This looks very well made but there are a few issues. It seems like the devs expect players to dump all their points in Lockpicking right at the start, Splat actually did invest in that skill from level 1 and he still couldn't open a lot of containers and doors. Also, either he was doing backstabbing wrong or it's too weak. He couldn't even kill a rat with a sneak attack. And the inventory doesn't have enough space, they could improve on that by making some items like herbs and mushrooms take up 1 square instead of 4.
