Doesn't get much more calm and collected than this. Great job by all involved! 👏

I always love Hawaiian controllers, super relaxed every time

Thrir alternative is preplanned, the first thing is to identify the problem and then decide to divert then communicate. They declare emerge ce when theyve decided to land. at

I believe he's based at Kahalui, the very airport the flight took off from

I wonder why the choose Honolulu airport, which was much further away from there position as there airport of origin, to land. I expected them wanted to land as soon as possible when there is smoke and heat in the back of the cabin... This could be potentially very threatening. Fortunately everything turned out ok.

Honolulu has a 12500ft Runway, Kahului just 5000ft. Right after the start the airplane with tons of fuel on board is simply too heavy to land on a short runway and needs more breaking distance. Especially because its a callsign "heavy", means bigger type of plane.
the pilots did a pre flight briefing in which highly likely honululu already was chosen as divert airport in case of such an emergency. thats why they immediate asked to divert to Honolulu before even declaring their emergency - perfect texbook example and as safe as possible.

@@yetijack5324I was wondering why they didn't go back to the airport of origin but this explains it perfectly. Thanks!

Kahalui has 0 capacity to work on these planes also. So diverting to Honolulu over a kahalui return makes alot more sense.

Also I assume HNL has way more hotel capacity if passengers have to stay overnight.

@@michael931 Hmm could be, however I doubt that they took that in consideration, however if they have contacted their company ops, it could be that they said: go to HNL for whatever reason...

Crews not calling pan pan or mayday seriously need to be addressed by the FAA.

Way too casual and timewasting before declaring emergency. US radio procedure terrible in these situations. First call requesting return should have been a pan-pan at the very least. Had anything disastrous occurred they'd have lost valuable time in communicating the nature of emergency and exploring the landing options.

    And what was the problem?

Why does ATC have to baby sit, like feeding pablum to an uncooperative infant, commercial Airline Pilots that should declare an EMERGENCY MUCH SOONER!

    • @LiamBeatzz
      @LiamBeatzz 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

no. not everything is an emergency, theres no point in declaring an emergency if you dont need to. they need to go thru checklists first and everything first to see

What a stupid comment. ATC doesn't need your woke criticism.

@@LiamBeatzzNot everything is an emergency, but smoke in the cabin with heat is always an emergency. This underestimating attitude is what caused the crash with SwissAir111.
Even if you don't declare an emergency, FAA ATC will declare an emergency FOR you when you report smoke in the cabin.

They need to decide on a plan, just shouting mayday, which means help me, is pointless

It’s not pointless because it affects the response.
