Thanks Kat and Mark! Very educational ! I learned 'entree' is actually the main food. It's so commonly mistaken by us, spanish speakers because it's similar to 'Entradas' , which in spanish is appetizers. It's great to go to american restaurants, everytime I go, there's something new, for example the last time, I ordered every at Chili's using the app, and the waiter arrived with everything prepared and ready to eat! Thanks again for the great lesson. Great job!
As a British person I was also confused the first time I heard "entrees" as the main course haha. Apps instead of servers / waiters at restaurants is gradually getting a little more common, even in the UK. There's a chain of pubs called "Whetherspoons" where you order everything through your phone - you don't have to stand up!
In my country, in most resturants getting you started with water is not part of the routine, and if you want water you have to order ,but some restaurants serve you with a little glass of fruit juices like pomegranates or so to welcome you. Thank you for helping us navigate American restaurants, and we are looking forward to watching the British part.
thanks Kit for sharing some background details on the service of US restaurants base on her previous working experience. its truely enjoyable to hear Mark and Kit sharing some differences between UK and US. Its one of the keys making your channel so special.thanks for all the effort making the english learning to be so fun and knowledgeable.
Hello dear teachers. Last winter break I traveled to USA for the first time. Honestly, the greeting part at the restaurants weirded me out a lot. Here in my country, you walk in, go ahead and settle down at a table without waiting for someone to lead you. My husband has been to US many times before so he kept warning me not to walk directly to a table in my sight, wait for the host instead, otherwise it would be so rude 😂 moreover, they serve iced water no matter what the weather is like. Even it was frigid outside in Atlanta, people were chugging their iced water. But to tell the truth, I liked every dish that I ordered in the USA especially the oyster restaurant in Alabama, stuffed crabs were delicious 😊
That's great to hear you enjoyed your US trip! I'm sure your husband's warning about the table etiquette was helpful - it's definitely something you need to watch out for! It sounds like you would be more familiar with the British dining experience (which is a future video we will release very soon!) 😄
Thank you for the valuable video, I've learned a couple of vocabulary and to be honest I knew then before but I didn't use them before, so they just VANISHED from my mind.
Hello First of all, thank you for this valuable series of videos. I love you both (Kat teacher and Mark teacher), and I’m glad I came across your channel. My native language is Persian, and I’ve been studying English for a long time. However, I still face challenges with speaking, and it’s difficult for me. When I want to start speaking in English, it feels like I’ve forgotten all the words and phrases right at the beginning, and my confidence drops completely. I should also mention that I’ve been listening to AJ Hoge’s podcast for a while and have been practicing the shadowing technique. I watch your videos as well, but I haven’t practiced the shadowing and imitation technique with your speeches yet. Could you please guide me on how I can speak English more fluently and without hesitation and improve my speaking skills? Thank you so much, my dear teachers.
Thanks so much for your lovely message and for your question. It's actually a very common issue - most people can understand a lot of words in a 2nd language, but struggle with speaking. It's usually because when you are a student, you listen and read *a lot*. Teachers talk to you, there are podcasts, audiobooks, TH-cam videos and grammar textbooks etc etc. This is important useful, but this method is only training your "receptive" skills. Speaking, however, is a "productive" skill. The only way to improve a productive skill is to produce! My own method is to take a single sentence (with a structure or word I really want to remember) and repeat it and repeat it and repeat it and repeat. And also write it and write it and write it and write it again and again until it comes out quickly and naturally. I take a break (of 1 or 2 days), then do it again. After some time, it does start to "stick" and I can produce it quickly and under a bit of pressure (someone looking at me!). It sounds quite old school, but it works for me. It's really still the best way to practice productive skills, especially if you don't have a native speaker or a partner to practice with often. I hope some of that helps!
@highlevellistening there are various dishes like chicken and rice , pizza , meat 🍖 etc Some famous appetisers like taboleh ,salad, or some chopped veges 😋 I hope to you 🥰
thanks a lot teachers and happy holiday . I would like will do lesson vocabulary ,typically expression ,idioms about christmas holiday , thankgiving ,happy new year . Hugs !!! from chile !!!
Thanks so much for watching! We actually did some holiday episodes at the end of last year! Christmas: th-cam.com/video/mzhQdkHDglA/w-d-xo.html New Year's th-cam.com/video/YDNGOsQJwfI/w-d-xo.html Enjoy!
And one more question: Should I study grammar first? I’m reading the Oxford Word Skills book, but I’m hesitant about whether I should study grammar or not. I am studying it, but some people say not to focus on grammar and just watch movies, series, and listen to podcasts. Can you guide me on what I should do?I’m self-studying, and I don’t have a language partner. Thank you so much for your help ❤😊
That's a great question! It's a balance. Our advice would be to use a good grammar book like the one you're using and then also focus on listening as much as you can to get familiar with the sounds.
Ita definitely aimed at higher level students, but often lower level students can be surprised by how much they can understand with us as well. It can make native English seem a bit less intimidating and overwhelming!
Maybe Kat knows about famous restaurant in Amarillo. You can get free 72 ounces of steak if you eat up this huge piece of meat for one hour. It’s definitely not about satisfying of meal 😊
That's crazy haha! I imagine only a 'professional' eater could manage to eat the whole thing in 1 hour. There are some challenges like that in the UK, but instead of steak it's a giant English breakfast. I think it's called the "Kid's Breakfast" because the meal is the same size as a child 😂www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-norfolk-21287000
I really want to know, is any fees for appetizer and is ordering appetizers obligatory before main dishes? Because there are no appetizers before main dishes in my country. So that is new experience for me.
Hiya! You definitely don’t have to order appetizers. Usually in American restaurants you might get some bread or chips for a snack, this is usually free (bread for the table), if you order appetizers you’ll see prices on the menu, or you can just order your main meal ☺️
Bye see you later guys and thank you for this outstanding lesson always be in a good shape because If you don't I'll find you I'm not joking because I'm coming to visit the both countries the soonest and I'll meet you both of you and I'll say hello face to face thank you again goodnight have a good last two months and half of the god dam year and please don't stop always be on a spot
Nothing. The server would probably be upset, surprised or a little angry, but nothing would happen. It would be very rare if someone approached you about not leaving a tip.
It's a common problem and frustration for students learning another language. Listening and speaking are very different skills, and need to be practised individually too. Many students often have stronger listening skills than speaking skills, because they listen to their teacher, listen to TV, listen to podcasts, listen to conversations etc. But the only way to improve speaking is to speak! I like to practice by repeating one short sentence again and again and again until I can say it smoothly. Then I try to make my own sentence with the same vocabulary or grammar, and practice it again and again. The next day I will probably forget some small words or make some mistakes with the sentence, but I will check it, correct it and repeat again and again and again. It's quite old school, but it works for me! Try it for yourself and see if it works for you too. Hope that helps!

Checking on customers is great, but it may sound rather overwhelming if done more than twice. Great to know. Different culture, different habits
Very true! At the same time it's quite funny how quickly I get used to it. Then when I come back to the UK I feel abandoned! 😄

Nothing. The server would probably be upset, surprised or a little angry, but nothing would happen. It would be very rare if someone approached you about not leaving a tip.
