I was born in the Soviet Union. I learned Latvian (native language), Russian (the main language of this country) and German. I have German because our teacher speaks to us in German.
When this empire started to fall, they started to change this country to turn to the world. In the middle of the 80's, American movies came in which were dubbed in Russian. At that time, I saw a new world.
After 1991, I lived in independent Latvia.
The next country for me was Ireland at the age of 34. On the first day, I understood the English of some locals too clearly for a person who had never learned this language before.
Living in another country is a choice between speaking the language or asking someone else for help. After a year, I began to speak English.
But the language was strange to me. I memorized words and used a few of them in conversation with locals. There was something strange about my ability to speak.
After 18 years, I remember those American movies because my English changed from a strange language to my fourth language.
I concluded that I got English while watching those movies because there was original English, after the grammar of the language appeared it in my brain, which it was clear that it was not a coincidence.

Jennifer I agree with you AMERICA is big very big. America Begin in Canada and finish in Argentina. In America more people speaks spanish than english. I think is more correct to call your country USA, because America is a continent not a country. Greetings

Yes but no Canadian says “I’m American” or anyone in a Latin or South American country says they are from America. Even when you type America 🇺🇸 that emoji came up. It’s just reality. Don’t be offended.
