For my money, the.best.version.of.Sweet.Jane.Period! Of all Lou's recordings of this, of the Velvet Underground, of the Cowboy Junkies, etc...this one totally rocks. It is the best and nobody could ever convince me otherwise. Why do I like it the best? The hook is in the rhythm guitar right? Right. The lead guitar is way down in the mix...you can hear it but not as prominently as other versions. It's stripped down, but with a fat sound!
R.I.P. Lou Reed. Lou wasn't the best at what he did, he was the only of what he did! (As Pierre Robert a disc jockey on WMMR 93.3 in Philly was wont to say of the Greatful Dead).
Yeah, I agree. Though there are other versions that I like almost as much, this one wins it hands down. That riff, the drums, the bass, and the other guitar, just perfect.
Agreed. There are so many great versions of this song -- all of them very different -- but this one just nails it. Something in just how lean it is. So pure.
And yes on rhythm. I love it when the rhythm is the hook. That's what made the Stones so great as well. That RIFF.
This is my second favorite version. I love the intensity of the "Rock n Roll Animal" version of Sweet Jane. That one is my favorite but this is a close second.
