  • Aristotle's school of philosophy the Lyceum was the greatest educational institution the world had ever seen when he founded it in 334 BC. After spending 20 years working in Plato's Academy, Aristotle left Athens when the master died, travelling the Greek islands carrying out his scientific studies before being summoned to his Macedonian homeland where he became the teacher of the mythical Alexander the Great.

    Hey you're still in Greece! It's very weird hearing the English pronunciation for all these Greek words. Greek is very different to most other languages, we actually have no relatives - languages of the same family. Great video summary on Aristotle! How did you end up in Greece btw? We're not a popular destination (apart from summer vacations I'd assume).

    When I visited Greece with my family we were on a schedule and, even though we briefly tried to find the Academy and Lyceum, we ditched the effort and headed into the Teygetos mountains of the Peloponnese and a few days in a revamped hunting lodge / cabin rental resort thingy. We drove the southern edges of the peninsula, and bought some capers from a shirtless old man just north of Kalamata. Lots of death boxes along the mountain roads (instead of guard rails ;).
    Diogenes says Aristotle died in Chalcis, at his mother's place. Is there another source saying Macedonia?

    • @TheLivingPhilosophy
      @TheLivingPhilosophy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ah thank you for pointing that out Appleblad. In all my ignorance I've always assumed that Chalcis was, since Aristotle was Macedonian, in Macedon. Didn't realise it was his mother's place. You are of course very right

      @@TheLivingPhilosophy Ah, that's an easy oversight. History is a mine field. lol! The part I love about Diogenes reading of Aristotle's will is that last bit about burying Pythias' bones next to his... I'm like "WTF are they doing carrying her bones around?" and "How did Herpyllis feel about this?" ;) Drama.

    It's interesting to me that Plato, with his highly authoritarian "philosopher-king" political system was, on a personal level, so tolerant with Aristotle who he allowed to attend the Academy for 20 years even though Aristotle disagreed with so much of his philosophy and if I remember correctly, thought that democracy was the superior political system. Any thoughts on that?

    • @philosophyman
      @philosophyman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It could be argued that platos government wasnt that authoritarian and it also could be argued that aristotle preferred aristocracy.... a class served by the slave class

      Hahaha I've been waiting the past month for this. Normally you get me every 1k. That 4Q video took off like a rocket so there was a lot of movement. The last one you caught me at was 16k so that's a big jump! It's funny I was just looking back to when the last one was and checked when the first one was and you've been doing it since I hit 2k so that's pretty damn cool. No wonder it didn't feel real without you commenting on it so thank you as ever Bill!

      @@TheLivingPhilosophy Sorry, I must have have missed a few! I was really busy and now away on holiday in France! I must say that I did love the 4q video! You did a great job at giving a view of philosophy that I hadn't seen before in the mainstream, just like with the metamodernism video.
      Sometimes it does feel like we are progressing to a new, more complete and more harmonious view of philosophy,
      Huge congratulations on the 26k, you are really going places! I look forward to seeing both your videos on more mainstream topics and your interesting new takes.
      Here's to 50k in the near future 🥂! It's been a great ride seeing you explode in the last year.

Used to always go there on family holidays and love the place not just for its philosophy but so much more! Thanks again for sharing the journey Bill. Seems like the latest spurt is slowing down again so we'll be back to 1k by 1k for a while I think!
