Free Camping at Stonecoal Dispersed Camping Area, Monongahela NF, WV

- Stonecoal Dispersed Camping Area is a free boondocking and primitive camping location in West Virginia. In this video, we visit the Stonecoal Dispersed Camping Area on Forest Road 209 in the Monongahela National Forest. Campsites offer free camping up to 14 days along the Shavers Fork of the Cheat River in Pocahontas County. Hiking trails, trout fishing, the natural scenic beauty and easy access off of US Route 250 make this free dispersed camping location a keeper. Although some sites may accommodate big rigs, the forest road and the turnaround area at the end of the road is more suitable for medium size travel trailers and below, truck campers, and car camping. There is no AT&T or Verizon cellular service at this location. Grid coordinates are: 38.63572, -79.87127

Thank you for these videos. I recently camped for 8 days in Monongahela National Forest and I used your videos as a guide to find these spots. I camped at Canaan loop road , site 17 at Stonecoal and then on Williams River site 16. Stonecoal was my favorite.

Spent some time there and they had a pesky skunk . He woke me up eating my cookies and chips at my table like he lived there. Think he got in through my vent on my furnace. He was pretty friendly , not overly agressive. I yelled at him and he left. I moved on in the morning and left him the snacks he violated. I'd rather tangle with a bear than a skunk anyday. 😂

Here a few nights, Sept. 2022. Very nice. Sites are far enough apart, you don't hear music, etc. Bring firewood, the forest is damp, mossy, spongy. Fallen limbs are rotted. The site about 110 yards past first vault toilet on the right is the best site and is on the river side. Water was low enough I hopped across rocks with my camp chair to a big flat rock in the middle of the river and read a book in the sunshine. Delightful.

I live in WV and was still shocked to hear you say it was May! I don’t remember it being that cold here in the Kanawha Valley in May a couple years ago . But of course we have all the chemical plants to keep us warm LOL.

We have a three-step process for RV trip planning. It starts with my personal camping map, then RV Trip Wizard, then All Stays Pro to double check height clearances, and finally I recreate the route in Google Maps. I use a second iPhone as my GPS device, so I don't have a separate GPS navigation device to maintain. Why do I do all this? My previous Garmin RV navigation device routed me to an unexpected low clearance bridge.
This is so helpful for planning a trip, thank you for taking the time to do this! The only disappointing thing is how many generators you mentioned hearing, do you find they ruin the peace and quiet and nature sounds or are the sites spaced out enough that you don't notice them?
There were only a few generators running in this dispersed camping area during my visit. A healthy distance between sites mitigates noise from the closest neighbor.
The first place you stopped isn't really a site. Someone may have built a fire ring there but that is where the stock truck parks to stock trout. Sites are numbered.

Is this open year round. Im a hot tent camper and would love it in the winter? Also what dispersement campgrounds are open year round?
Where's a good place to get firewood nearby in case there's nothing harvestable at the sites?
Let us know what you discover relating to the firewood situation. During our visit there was lots of dead wood on the ground. Lou
Is there a weight limit on the narrow bridge?
Good question. None was posted, but all the bridges looked like they were well suited for this camping area.

How do you get a permit to camp?
Hi Brenda, No permit is required to camp at Stonecoal Dispersed Camping Area. Camping is first come, first served.
We checked the area out for an upcoming multiday bike trip. 1/2" of snow May 1, 2023.
