That moment where Faro reveals he erased Apollo must be the most chilling and dreadful moments a game ever delivered to me, the thought of someone deliberatly erasing all of human history at once, all our achievements, all our art, everything, is such an amazing kind of existential horror in my opinion.

Personally it hit me harder when the real-world implications of that decision were shown at ELEUTHIA-9. The prospect of being a barely-educated teenager sent out into the world with nothing but your peers and the clothes on your back, trying to survive, is terrifying... especially if you've spent your whole life having all your physical needs taken care of.
The first generation had never known hunger and suddenly they had to find their next meal without even knowing where food might come from. I can't imagine how many of them died through the trial and error process of establishing a settlement. I'd be unsurprised if the populations of some of the cradles got wiped out entirely.

I think Tedd Faro was a coward in a different way. It wasn't just about hiding his crimes from the world. He wanted to absolve HIMSELF of his own guilt. He couldn't handle the guilt of being single-handedly responsible for the destruction of life on Earth, so he instead decided to put all the blame on the knowledge that allowed him to build the Faro Plague in the first place instead of his own incompetence. In other words, he is LITERALLY a craftsman blaming his tools.

The 1st thing I thought was, "Ah ... the Grey Goo Scenario."
The idea is that, if we truly achieve functional nanotechnology (i.e.: the ability to design & manufacture microscopic robots that can self-replicate) we could inadvertently engineer our own demise *and the destruction of all life on earth* if nanotechnology were to ever malfunction & start replicating out of control, consuming everything & everyone within its reach. The end result would be the disappearance of all lifeforms as we know it -- flora & fauna alike -- replaced by a seething, worldwide mass of "grey goo" (billions & trillions of nanobots).
What the devs of Horizon Zero Dawn did was come up w/ a clever (& much more game-friendly) variation on this doomsday scenario.

You know what really hurts? knowing I'll never be able to experience this game again the same way I did the first time.
I didn't watch any trailers nor informed myself before buying the game, I just knew this was a game about a girl with a bow hunting robot-dinosaurs; so you can imagine how surprised I was when I first saw the ruins of the old world, buildings falling apart, overgrown and deteriorated; and that's when I realized "Holy shit, this is a post-apocalyptic world".
The mystery of what happened to the world, finding out who Aloy's "mother" is, what the Zero Dawn project was and why the machines were still attacking if it "worked"... It was the first time in YEARS that I've felt so invested in a game and its world.

There's something that amazes me about Aloy. Save for the prologue, we understand she's 18-19 years old for the whole game. Yet, in my case at least, I saw her more as a inexperienced and innocent teenager at the beginning of the game with the Nora, and more as a strong adult leader by the end of the game.
I'd say it's because her growth as a character (Which isn't much, but still), the way you can dress her with more complex outfits which represent higher ranks... But most importantly, because of the way she wins the respect of so many characters throughout the game. She essentially saves the Nora, she helps several Oseram, she gives information to the Carja Sun King himself, she even travels to the Banuk lands to solve some conflicts... You realize how much of an adult she has become when everyone respects her for her achievements and intentions, and still keeps herself down-to-earth, never playing the victim nor taking advantage of her position.
And I love how, in Forbbiden West, the focus seems to be on a personal story for Aloy. That sounds great. Really want to see how she progresses from up-close.

I'll be honest @GamingWins, I'm a little sad I didn't see a win in there for all the NPC reunions we got right before the last stand. I know they were marked as optional, checking the ridge and the spire, but it added so much gravitas. To me, it made the game feel so much more alive and raised the stakes even higher because everyone worth remembering from my side quests and main story is showing up to a fight they may certainly perish in. I felt so more responsibility and a need to be perfect in this last mission to make sure they are all safe and sound. I had two theories when I was playing.
The first was that Aloy's mother had wandered beyond the mountain and became pregnant with someone from the sun kingdom. She returned but gave birth to Aloy just beyond the mountain's scope. Rost saw everyone leaving her to die as she was beyond the border and chose to become an outcast in order to save her life.
That got blown to hell when the game revealed she was born from the mountain.
Then when we were getting into the idea of Zero Dawn, I thought I had a decent grasp.
The world came close to ending, but by shutting down every single piece of technology, EVERYTHING, they were able to return the world to some semblance of renewal. However, with the detonation, and devestation, humanity would lose everything but the people. Those who had travelled would be stuck but alive, and the swarm, having consumed most of the planet, would be nothing but scrap. Only the barest levels of technology buried deep in bunkers would have a hope to survive, but too few people knew they existed, let alone how to open them.
And THEN it was revealed that Zero Dawn literally allowed the destruction of the entire world.
From now on, I'm all for Horizon.
It went FAR and beyond everything I thought could happen with these games.
Once Forbidden West comes out, I hope they're able to keep up this level of storytelling quality.

    • @caffeinedelusions
      @caffeinedelusions ปีที่แล้ว +3

I feel like the game deliberately baits you into thinking that the Faro Plague had survivors, simply because it's kind of drilled into us by virtually every other post-apocalyptic story that in any apocalypse there're always going to be people that slip through the cracks of the threat to scrape out an existence from the ruins. The Last of Us. The Walking Dead. Heck, I Am Legend and its various adaptations.
Horizon does a masterful job of playing into that expectation RIGHT up to the instant that it rips it away from you. That's what makes the Faro plague so horrifying. The notion that as existential threats to humanity go, the Chariot line is just flat out BUILT DIFFERENT in a literal sense.
There's always going to be a certain Pirates Vs Ninjas comparison to be had between the various world-ending threats in media, whether supervirus, zombie, alien invasion, kaiju, nuclear exchange, Skynet.... but of all of them, the Faro Plague is the most horrifying because it is simultaneously sweepingly universal and horrifyingly personal.
I don't think it's any mistake that the timeline of the game presents itself such that the majority of the players have to think about what it would be like as a senior 40 or 50 years down the road, frail and elderly, watching the end of the world and wondering if your health will give out before the machines finally catch up to you because at your age there's nothing you can do to fight them.

What I really loved about this game was the narrative progression and how it consistently respects the player by not dragging any one narrative point/motivation on for too long.
The game starts and you want to know who Aloy is, and where she came from...
and right as the average player starts to get well in front of the story the game says “okay, we know that you’re piecing this together, let’s just give you this and transition on to the next thing”...
So you find out where Aloy came from.
Then the story says “Well, what *EXACTLY* happened to the old ones? What were they doing?” And you start unraveling that mystery, and shortly after you start getting well in front of that storyline, the game says “OKAY! We know you’re not slow, and you’ve probably begun to figure it out.” And they give you about 2 or 3 hologram recordings that fully explain that...
Then the story asks *“How did Hades lose control/take control from Gaia? What is his goal and why? And how do I stop it?”* And that’s the final act of the game.
Typically a game would have been about *JUST ONE* of those plot lines because each has more than enough to center a whole game around, and most devs would have been more than content to stretch one of those storylines into an entire game. Hell, this could have EASILY been two games if Guerrilla Games was into excess padding.
I also appreciate a game that doesn’t refuse to answer questions because writers are afraid of writing themselves into a corner and making sequels hard to justify.
While I actually thought The Last of Us 2 was a better game (I know I’m alone, but I don’t care... that game is a tour de force, fight me, lol... please don’t), *this is BY FAR my favorite NEW IP of the last generation.*

      1. Free Heap. Petra shows up with her completed weapon at the end regardless if you have done the quest chain or not.
      2. Hunters Lodge. Talanah replaces Sona as the third companion in the final battle against HADES and is the canonical option.

Played the game recently and no game has ever brought me greater rage than hearing Ted had destroyed Apollo and killed every bright mind left all because of some fucking superman injustice complex of that "if I fell to the dark side and I'm the best of us then no one deserves to be as smart as me." Fantastic writing and its one of the reasons this games story is one of my favorites, but goddamn fuck that dude.

, Aloy starts the game looking for answers that will connect her to the world she knows instead she becomes snared in a quest that permanently severs her from that workd. She makes peace with it and if you do enough side quests and get all the potential allies she's part of a larger world but she cannot be Aloy of the Nora anymore.

This was one of the few games I specifically bought a PS4 for. It was a day 1 buy, and I love it. Day 1 buy on its Steam release too. It is easily in my top 10 games of all time, and I'm so excited for the next one.
I love Aloy as a character. Her sarcasm sings to my British heart, but the way she interacts with the world and the use of the sarcasm is so wonderfully done.
She's not sarcastic to be an asshole (most of the time), but to try and correct peoples' thinking. It's unsuccessful, but the words she uses in the situations she uses them show that she, at least a little, wants the people who shunned her for so long to be better, and smarter.

:) Some additions, as I watch your video:
    1. The Lion King parallel: there's no such thing, it's quite the opposite. In Lion King, a newborn future-king is being introduced to the nation. In Horizon Zero Dawn, no one to introduce Aloy to, no one cares about her, baby-Aloy is the opposite of a future-king; an outcast. The only parallel is the movement and the cliff.
    2. In Aloy's vision, the tail of a Corruptor is just starting to transform into Lansra's hat.
    3. Resh was one of the two guards of Lansra when she tried to interrupt the Naming Ceremony. They were really a club of jerks.
    4. It's quite ironic that Aloy has never got any knowledge about her mother (except that pine-tree story). Sobeck was just Aloy herself living a thousand years earlier, thus as Rost became her step-father, so became Sobeck her step-mother.
    🤘🏼

YES. Yes to everything in this video. I started playing and put down HZD because I thought it was boring. Then I decided to give it a second chance and actually got to the first scene with Elizabet and Ted and was hooked instantly. I have told everyone that I mention this game to that it has one of the most horrifying apocalypse scenarios I have ever seen in media. It’s what kept me pushing through this game, for the story behind everything, every piece of information about then Zero Dawn project. I had to pause and take a break when it was revealed that Ted had purged Apollo and we would never access the entirety of human knowledge again. The gameplay and main story is good in this game don’t get me wrong, but it’s the background story, the pieces you have to pay attention to, that you have to collect through exploration that make it shine.

i don't mind girls as protagonists either- hell, most of my stories are female led, and in games with a create-a-character, i pick the female option- but there's a way to do it. most western entertainment these days force it- it's not natural. "oh, let's make a female-led Ghostbusters cause we need representation', or the fabled and feared Mary Sue trope. doing it naturally means that they can do it not because they are girls- i am woman, hear me roar-, but because they know how. Japan does this naturally, but people on Twitter are upset cause oversized boobs, yet if they were to make Evangelion or Cowboy Bebop spinoffs that focus on the female leads, the fans would love it.
if you live out in the wilderness with a small community, you either learn to defend yourself from wild animals and outsiders or become lunch- also practice fighting with toys to stave off boredom helps. This is why franchises like Tomb Raider, Horizon, Underworld, Aliens (the original four), and Wonder Woman work, and why characters such as Sonya Blade, Princess Leia, Katniss, Hermione, Arya Stark, Eowyn, and Mulan (the cartoon, not the god-awful live-action one) are so beloved- it's not because they are woman, but because they know how to do this stuff through training and determination or just to survive, something men also do, and not because "we need representation".

16:58 certainly not ALL of Apollo’s knowledge was wiped from existence. Apollo was the vessel that all of our knowledge was stored in, but not every vehicle that Knowledge could be delivered in was destroyed... because it’s not like the earth was flooded or scorched, just that it was made completely uninhabitable for life to exist...
But you can look at the focus, and how much a device that small and isolated was able to teach Aloy and see that there are certainly other well’s of knowledge available.
Sylens entire thing was that he was able to gain the knowledge he had because he was willing to delve into the lairs of the old ones, where others were not. So while he and Aloy might not have access to ALL of the knowledge, bits and pieces certainly exist throughout the land... if you’re willing to go and get it.

Really appreciated the video you made of this and discussing all the themes. I really enjoyed that about the game. Especially since it has one of the saddest "end of the world" scenarios actaully happen and we're several hundred years later after those events. But the hope that Aloy has to do better, bringing in people to stop such a huge threat and come together is just👍👌 Great stuff!
Glad you like the redheads being represented. Not sure if you've played it, but might I recommend a game called Control. Which also features a bad to the bones, witty redhead named Jesse Faden, who finds herself caught up in a bizarre, paranatural mess in a strange building.

I love this game. The world is gorgeous. The characters are well acted. And the story oh my God the story. I still can't believe they had the nerve to tell such a dark and depressing story. From the very beginning to get this sense of something is horribly wrong. With the robot remains all over the land sticking out of mountains and even covering the mountains themselves. And the payoff is so heartbreaking. To learn the only way to save the human race was to first let it go completely extinct is bone chilling. It gets me every single time. And just a little fun fact I love that they hid this reveal/story plot in the game's title.

    I love this game!!!
I waited 'til 2020 to finally play it and resisted the temptation to watch a let's play for years (I literally wanted to play this from the moment I first saw the Trailer)
I never realised the thing with the names.
I mean, sure, the Horus, the Khopesh, the Scarab, that I got immediatelly, but Ted Faro having ties to the Pharaoh, or the Name Sobek... I always thought these to be kinda bizarre names, but never realised the egyptian theme they had.

    • @derskalde4973
      @derskalde4973 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hm, viewed in that light, there is even more. Like think about it. Faro brought a plague down on earth, that destroyed the crops and killed all life, both plant and animals, and only those that stayed inside the bunkers survived. And then he doomed future generations by deactivating Apollo.
Some may recognize this, and maybe (probably) this is just me interpreting things into this, but with the whole egyptian theme, this reminds me of the Exodus.
The Pharaoh refused to listen to Moses, so God send the ten plagues to show everyone that the egyptian gods had no Power. One of the plagues was possibly scarabs, which were considered holy and one could be executed for killing one, so imagine how it must have been to be unable to make even a single step without killing dozens of them.
If I recall correctly, the 7th and 8th plague were a big hailstorm, that destroyed all the plants in all of Egypt and killed all Men and beasts that were outside, followed by an enormous swarm of locusts, which ate all and everything that was spared by the hailstorm. But the Pharaohs pride knew no bounds, so finally, in the 10th plague, God send an Angel to slay all the firstborn of Egypt, from both animals and humans, from the lowest slave in the dungeon to Pharaoh on his Throne.
Although in HZD it is only one plague, some of the effects of the Faro Plague resemble parts of the ten plagues:
The Nile became blood : the Horus Unit that slaughtered dolphins at the American Westcoast and colored the water in the bay red with blood
      Only the people inside survived
All plants and creatures outside were killed by the hail, and the remains consumed by locusts : the robots of the Chariot Line destroy and consume all organic matter
Gods Angel slew all firstborn in Egypt : Faro disabled the Apollo Program and withheld knowledge from future generations, figuratively killing all firstborn

20:05 I'm pretty sure the flower triangles were created by DEMETER since the metal flower guy says something about them only appearing after the fall of GAIA Prime, when the Subordinate Functions became their own AI's, and DEMETER was the one in charge of plant-life.

Anyone notice that Bast's voice actor is Kirito's voice actor in the English dubbed of Sword Art Online.
(Edit): Sylens is also Zavala From the Destiny games.

"Animators are actors too." What an amazing line.
