  • This is a real-world range test on the 625Wh Trek Rail eMTB on Cape Town's most technical trails. The Bosch system has four support modes of Eco, Tour, eMTB and Turbo but for this test the bike was only ridden in eMTB mode, which is the second highest support setting.

    Nice range test! I did 64 kilometer and 2215 meters of altitude climbing ( and also 2200 meters of descent) on one day with my standard Trek Rail 9.8 before the battery stopped. Used the whole day Eco mode and was cycling 6 hours (day was 9 hours). I am 93 kilo plus backpack from around 4,5 kilo.

    Trek Rail is awesome. Previously my "huff & puff" ride was YT Jeffsy which was great, it's just that I developed AFIB so can ride normally but started getting AFIB more and guy in riding group let me ride his Spec Levo and converted me. Was going to wait few years but Emtb way too much fun. I will change between modes so takes pressure off heart and maximize fun. Uphill use emtb or turbo if really steep but if riding with mixed group Eco mode works well. The motor cuts off on downhills so still skills required 🚵‍♂️😎

    I’ve had the Rail 7 since April and its been a great ride! I ride in Colorado so its fairly rocky and technical (we are the Rocky Mountains after all) and the Rail 7 is great for both climbing and descending. I have not found the motor to be too noisy and the range is at least 4-5 hours easy. I’m 6 feet tall and 180lbs with probably slightly above average fitness level these days. Love the geometry on this bike and the 29’ers help too as compared to my old Specialized s-works Epic carbon that’s 12 years old! All in all, been a really solid purchase for the money paid ($5300 US).

      I'm considering buying the Rail 7 or Specialized Levo but I'm leaning towards the Rail. My local bike shop sells it for $5999 so you got a good deal.

    • @billb7794
      @billb7794 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I went in to start negotiations right before Covid shut everything down, so was able to talk them down a little. Would be hard now with the increased demand! I thought about the Levo as well but I was worried about the issues with the motor. I’ve spoke to a number of folks with Levo’s on the trails and about 3/4 have had those motor issues so I’m happy with my decision.

    How did you find the geometry ? I owned a remedy , and demo rode a slash , I usually ride a large in most bikes , found the trek bikes to be quite short in the reach

    • @bikenetwork_SA
      @bikenetwork_SA  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The medium is a 445 reach with a 64.9h/a, which for me, at 1.74m and the way i like to ride is just peachy. If it was my bike I would go up to a 170mm fork. As is though, Strava tells me the Rail is VERY capable on technical trails. It works for me. On the current Slash I ride a Large. If you are buying an eMTB - I would advise not to go too huge on the reach, with the extra weight they can become less agile when you go with too big a reach number. Cheers! - Myles Kelsey

    I've been hearing about the Bosch motor causing a rattle noise when decending, did you experience this with the rail?

    • @bikenetwork_SA
      @bikenetwork_SA  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ken, The Bosch system is not the quietest but also not the loudest. There is a slight rattle but its not as dramatic as some media outlets portray it to be and to be honest I barely notice it. All eMTB's have some added noises going on. When I started riding eMTB's I spent so much time fussing to make them quieter but after spending a lot of time on them it is not something that bothers me anymore. Nowadays I prioritize things like the manner in which the power is delivered, the overall agility of the bike, whether the decoupling is smooth or harsh and what kind of drag there is on the system when coasting. - Myles.

    personally not sure how to think about it . 50 km ride is for me a normal ride, nothing that drains me to a level on such trails that i feel depleted . so one way is then 25km, thats really short . i hoped a ebike will give me a wider range and possibility to see more but this way it will only die on me before im done and i have dead weight on me. i was on the look out for a electric dirt bike like CAKE but then i reminded myself to check electric mtb because i thought "oh cool i can still workout but have the extra power to go further then you normally would" . i think the only place this kind of electric bicycles make sense for "me" is for places with steep inclines and for riders who want to downhill technical trails on and on and have no lift near by. or if you want to travel with heavy weight (backpack).

      You can get a spare battery and put it in a pack specifically made for them.

    • @pwrcycles4735
      @pwrcycles4735 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just picked up my first ebike, this thing drains your energy in a different way, because its heavier and you are moving so much faster,you use alot more energy with upper body as well you have to keep high cadance to keep the motor turning on its sweetspot. So comparing your normal 50k with 50k on a ebike you may end up using more energy than you think, but offcourse if you do those 50k and still feel strong the only option is to go with a bike frame that has easy detectable battery or are some that take a small add-on pack that can boost your riding for aditional 20-25k.

      Colorado is a big mountain State in the United States. My Rail 9.7 always ends up with the same mileage as follows: ECO/55 miles/7500 feet vertical, Tour/45/6500, eMTB/35/5500, Turbo/25/4500. It doesn't seem to care what speed I go. Very predictable battery usage.
