Why Views About China Are So Different in the Global North and South

  • China is deeply unpopular in the U.S., UK, Japan, and most other wealthy countries, and given the politics in those regions, there's no indication that's going to change anytime soon. It's a very different story, though, in large parts of developing Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East where public opinion surveys reveal generally favorable views of the Chinese.
A new "poll of polls" by the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) on global public opinion about China reveals a lot more nuance about how people in the Global South feel about their countries' ties with China than what is framed in the mainstream media narratives.
Andrew Chubb, a senior fellow at ASPI, led the project and joins Eric & Cobus to discuss what the data tells us about the diversity of views on China across the Global South.

Looks like China is doing pretty good. Western media is global media. So discrepancy is basically a measure of the influence of western media around the world.

US Congress spends $1.6 billion to mainstream medias to spread lies and propaganda on China. Sadly, many Americans and Europeans who haven't been to China believe in the lies and propaganda on China. China is now giving 144 hours visit to China visa free. TH-camrs, like "Sunkissed Bucket List", "Ken Abroad" and several others especially those from the UK who visited China said that they've been lied to by their medias. Sunkissed Bucket List went to China four times and there are more to come. Other TH-camrs have been to China more than once.

Exactly. The MSM in G7 nations have a consistently negative bias narrative to paint China as a dystopian society and a threat to their citizenry. Why?
      The Possible reasons are:
      (1) the societal elites in developed nations fear of a successful competitor coming from the non-West
      (2) the Western leaders are worried that their citizens will become disenchanted with the unfairness in their own society between the "haves" and " have-nots"
      (3) their citizenry are subjected to a longitudinal exposure of negative narratives about China, resulting in a skewed / bias view of Chinese people and society
      (4) petty-minded envy of the success of others that live outside their system, especially when the trajectory of their economy is in the opposite directions to each other.

Congrats to reaching the 15 years milestone of this program! Your team's efforts in providing readers/audience insightful information and diverse opinions in the areas neglected by the so-called MSM but increasingly important in our world are appreciated. Even in this episode, you have put world opinions about China in perspectives and injected nuances, complications and distortions into the topic. We look froward to many more '15 years' of fairness and balance of China-Global South Project. Thank you!
