Great video Tim. I just climbed the Vichren in the Pirin National Park last week and wanted to climb Musala the next day, as I was running out of time. But Vichren already killed me (so much bouldering and snow - without hiking poles and snow spikes) so I switched to the 7 lakes of Rila instead, to have a relaxing beautiful hike. So actually I am more than thankful that you filmed your climb of Musala. It looks so beautiful and is definitely on my list but you just gave me some kind of satisfaction with your video. Great filming and editing of a wonderful adventure! Looking forward to your next one. Cheers, Mario

Greetings from Bulgaria, i made the same mistake taking the river trial and was tired at the way back so i took the lift from Yastrebetz.

The river trail is way better and you can run it down. The lift is boring.

Great video! Let me correct you: the ottomans didn’t name the Musala peak. They just translated the name: Ra-do-bill. It means A hill close to God. In Turkish: mus-allah is just the same but because of so many years of the ottomans and the Turkish governing Bulgaria, that name stick.

Tim, thank you it was great! I ve done the 5lakes trail at Pirin, it was also amazing.. all except the chairlift which was scary. (Am i the only one who hate them? cause i see everybody so calm on them, are they on drugs or snth? 😅 ) Its in my plans Musala peak and 7lakes at Rila.Thank you for the gps track. Do you have one for the 7lakes too? Cause i cannot find one without lift.

Great trip report. Still plenty of snow. I like to hike solo, but mountain rescue is too expensive anyways, so no point of sharing my location.

It is the highest peak in the Balkans. Higher than anything in your favorite Romania. Musala is not a mountain but a peak in Rila Mountain. There are more challenging hikes in Rila. Not difficult to find out.

First tip of solo hikes is never rely on cellphone reception. In general solo hikes are a bad idea. If you grow up in a country with no mountains, you understestimate the mountains. I know your countrymen, so talking from experience.
