Alan is such a nice guy that he's able to keep his cool with this guy's stupid questions while interjecting a little sarcasm and wit along the way keeping his adorable smile in check. He's such a consummate professional and so incredibly talented. DM was never the same without him sadly.

    • @eless6985

      I agree with you completely. Dave seemed to be fine with Alan, but then he got into his drugged out Jesus phase during "Songs of Faith and Devotion", and became essentially useless. The tag-team of Gore and Fletch reeked of professional envy. Alan was a threat to them. Fletch's contribution to the musicality of the band still remains a rhetorical question. Gore is a good songwriter, but appears extremely insecure. He tried too hard to be dead sexy during his black leather bondage days 😁

    I have nothing but respect for Alan and I find him to be a most attractive man inside and out, but he is the kind of person that, if he doesn't remember to smile enough, his natural assurance and collected, serious personality can easily pass as self-sufficiency.
    Yes the interviewer was a little too much, but I do feel that his intention was good and he was just trying to be engaging and friendly and, you know, make things fun and interesting (I mean this IS MUCH Music after all, not the French Parliament..) .. and he's sitting there with ''You pathetic weirdo'' written all over his face. I don't know. That he didn't like the guy, I can understand (and maybe he even felt like he was being made fun of here and there which would have probably crossed my mind too), but the thing is, as an artist you're doing the interview for your fans (and to show your pretty face to potential new ones), and when you don't make the smallest effort to look like you actually want to be there, ultimately it's your fans that get to watch you look bored out of your mind through the whole thing.. and I don't know how that's good promo for you or your band.
    Had I been old enough to watch this back when it aired, all I would have seen here is a young magazine-faced bloke with an attitude.. and I would have quickly changed the channel.
    Dave would have laughed at at least some of this guy's jokes (and probably all of 'em), and then the whole thing wouldn't have been so painfully awkward..

    • @captaingish
      @captaingish 10 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I do see your point but the funny thing is...that's one of the qualities I admire most about Allan and that's his uncompromising honesty, he doesn't sugar coat and he's not a salesman.

    • @JayeMallard619
      @JayeMallard619 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, I do think that as an individual, in your one-to-one, personal relationships, it is indeed an admirable trait to have.. but the point of an interview is to make people like you, so if you have zero talent for hypocrisy, please, lend your seat to another band member who's maybe better at it. ;)
      And you know, I'm complaining about Alan here, but really I think none of DM members have ever been great in interviews except for Dave. He's the only one who I feel is first and foremost a ''people person'', and actually enjoys sitting down with somebody and have that kind of interaction, ''connecting'' with people. The others almost always looked like they'd rather be spending some quality time with a piece of paper/synth/accounts book.. Not all that engaging.. ;)
      So, yes, his honesty is admirable generally-speaking, but I can't help but cringe watching him here,
      :)

    • @captaingish
      @captaingish 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Well if you have to put on a persona to make people like you then you're not being yourself, you're not being real. I don't know, I quite like that they're not people persons although I've watched many of their interviews and I think they express themselves well. I just find happy, positive people irritating after a while. Blame it on too much Depeche Mode music! Lol.

    • @JayeMallard619
      @JayeMallard619 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      captaingish
      Now, is it Depeche Mode's music that made you irritated by happy people or is it the other way around: You always found them irritating and therefore you find that Depeche's music speaks to you?.. ;P
      I think for me it's the latter. I never trusted overly happy people. They scream ''poser'' to me. On the other hand I've always loved Martin's cynical sense of humor that comes through in his lyrics, and his lucidity of how mundane and phony life and people can be.. But I'm also for making an effort to put people at ease when I'm talking to them, and not crush them under my unshakable assurance.. ;)

    • @chemicalpoisons
      @chemicalpoisons 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      HijaDelMar6 I understand what you're saying, but honestly, I don't think Alan owed this guy a thing.
      Firstly, he was making fun of him from the start; the teddy bear, the condescending attitude, trying desperately to be funny when he was clearly not. If you watch other interviews of Alan, you'll see that he's almost shy when his turn to speak comes. Yet, if he is indulged, he'll talk for hours and hours, and you can definitely see him beaming when he speaks his mind.
      Lastly, and that is what *really* annoyed me with this interview, is that the guy is bloody _clueless_. Absolutely clueless. He confused the titles of the song (and _Sacred_ which is like one of the best songs in the album), he said that they were famous in Britain but not everywhere else, when it was exactly the opposite, and he expected Alan to actually agree with the crap he was saying. That's as useless as an interviewer I have ever seen in my life. And he also commented on Dave's son when Dave wasn't even around, which was a low blow for me.
      I, personally, want to shake Alan's hand for actually finishing the interview, with a rightfully fed up attitude notwithstanding. I'd have punched him midway through.

    What a douce way to start an interview:
    You’re not popular
    You play more than keyboards?
    Compares you to Georgia Satellites
    Your synthpop genre is dying
    And the whole time people are screaming for Alan

    The interviewer was an idiot. In fact I think he was coked up. Alan certainly had little use for him. I don't blame Alan for having an attitude.

      Alan doesn't have an "attitude" - he is annoyed by this moron "interviewing" him. Anybody would be.

    I commend Alan for remaining calm and gracious. 30 seconds in and I wanted to slap that host in the face. *deep breath*

    The journo starts the int the worst way possible. He obviously didn´t care to do any research. Many musicians would take a piss of him. Alan is a perfect gentleman. I grew up in Prague, behind the iron curtain and even I knew DM weren´t taken seriously in the UK. But they became huge in Germany and Switzerland. Then France, Italy, Austria, Sweden. And they were massive is Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Poland. Then I found out they were huge in Latin America, too. Why? I like New Order. How many times toured New Order Prague? Never! While Depeche Mode have played in Prague about 9 times. There was something mystical about them. The music. The image. They were neither pop, nor alternative. They did things their way and were somehow able to connect with fans all around the world. And they went to play live to countries where other big bands don´t bother to go.

      jakubpetricek When this guy said they weren't so popular in other places outside UK I was like, what??? They were huge even here in Latin America.
