I have a 2010 Kakadu petrol Prado. It feels bullet proof to drive and has been totally reliable over 165000k. For long distance driving it is supremely comfortable. I love the 150 litre fuel tank. It Is not perfect but I expect it will last many more years of trouble free driving. My mechanic said to me you can tell the quality of Prados when you work on them.

Actually the Prado's are built in Thailand not Japan. I have a brand new one on order since March, but will be sep or Oct earliest before I get one. As for many saying it looks outdated, probably they are right, but one thing for sure it is reliable and less likely to break than the latest cars with electronic everything. I actually prefer this over other cars that have so much tech you need to go on a learning course just to be able to drive or operate it. It still has all the essential safety features such as active cruise control, radar breaking, side vision collision avoidance, parking monitoring, etc.
I'm getting the 2.8L diesel. It will serve its purpose for what I want it for, to be able to drive off road anywhere, drive through snow and ice covered roads, carry all our camping / camera gear and our 3 dogs anywhere, without needing to worry about road conditions or breaking down. Sure it won't go around corners fast or be super nimble around town, but that is not what most people will buy one for. When I want to drive fast around corners or want to have a bit of speed fun then I use my BMW. The latest model that I am getting is not going to change much from the previous model currently out. There is a completely new model rumoured to be out in 2 to 3 years time as it has been delayed. I hope though even if they do modernise it a lot that they don't fill it full of electronic rubbish that is not needed and can make it less reliable.

The Fortuner sold in Australia is made in Thailand. The Prado sold in Australia comes from Japan. The Prado sold in China is manufactured in China. Thailand does not manufacture the Prado for any market. That salesperson doesn't know what they are talking about. Which is fairly typical in so many of my interactions with car sales people. There are only a few good ones who really know their product well.

Test drove the Everest and Prado, was all hyped up on the Prado until I drove it, The Everest was better everywhere, i can't understand why people still rate the Prado, I think Toyota needs to hurry to do some upgrades, it was like driving a decade-old vehicle after driving the Everest. The Prado rolled around the corners, the electronics were dated and old feeling in a brand new car, everything about it felt old and sluggish, I felt like I went from a modern vehicle in the Everest to driving my granddad's favorite 4WD. I think the people who still rate the Prado just haven't driven a more modern 4WD. Although I have to say the Prado with the extra fuel tank would be very handy on the long haul.

I suspect you test drove only on smooth tarmac where yes clear win for the Everest.
Try doing a few hundred kms on B roads or Gravel and you'll see why Prado sales figures are like they are.
also the Prado will still be running in a decade, Everest....doubtful.

    things other reviewers dont cover,
    1. sitting knees up. I found this awkward given the size of the vehicle.
    2. Loading a mountain bike with wheels on is a good reference than telling the boot litre size which is just numbers.
Lab is nice comparison and oh yeah Labs aren't cheap as well.

I agree with your first point, I've looked at a couple of Prados now and they just don't seem to be as spacious as they should inside for what is a fairly large car.
The other thing that I don't like about them is that the steering wheel seems too small; I don't know why it bothers me but it just seems out of proportion with the rest of the dash.

The knees up is common on all full chassis ladder frame off roaders. You can get Mono frame "suv" like xtrail etc but they are useless off road. I owned an Xtrail Ti and while it had loads of interior space, it would rattle your teeth loose on basic gravel roads. Sold it after 10,000km.

I asked about the new hilux and was immediately pushed towards a Rogue, asked about new tundra, got blank looks, there was an admission to losing sales to Ram and an admission to Prado changing shape. Then there’s the minimum 9 month wait on Prado and hilux.

Not sure where you got that info from, lack of modern and safety features?
The Prado I have on order has lane departure warning, radar breaking, active cruise control, side view crash avoidance, parking monitoring, reverse collision detection, pedestrian monitoring, 360o view cameras and some other safety features which I forgot, without looking at the catalogue again. Are they not enough safety features? I am glad it doesn't have the heads up display thing. I drove a car that had that, it is bloody annoying stuck in your line of vision. Here in Japan no new cars come with any infotainment systems. You order it when you buy the car so you can put in exactly what you want and not have to have the rubbish basic model that the manufacturers put in. The Prado has a digital centre display, but the Speedo, fuel gauge etc are analogue, which actually I prefer. Gives it a more modern/retro feel, like the escudor I have now. That even has a large analogue clock in the middle of the dash, easy to see, and looks super cool and retro. Digital are ok but not easy to see in bright sunny weather or when you are bumping around off road.

Which manufacturer has made a decent diesel engine? Mercedes OM642 V6 diesels are probably the best. Ford's V6 diesels, fitted to Land Rovers and the Renault V6 diesel in the Nissan Pathfinder/Navara both suffered spun big end bearings, VW V6 diesels are a bit hit and miss. The early BMW inline six diesels suffered catastrophic failures due to swirl flaps entering the combustion chamber, and the later ones had random timing chain breakages.
Which diesel engine manufacturer would you prefer to go with? 🙂
