So in the first Ultimate Spider-Man run Fisk bought the wrestling company that Spider-Man first appeared at so Fisk would have the rights to Spider-Man. And then started flooding the market with Spider-Man merchandise so people would start getting tired of and even hating Spider-Man.

I've seen scans of comics as early as the Stan Lee days where the term was being used, but I don't think Stan meant it the way that it reads. Mainly because Stan himself always argued that he created the series with the intention of mutants being humans too. Dr. King was not saying that violence is the only way to get their point across. He used that phrase, "a riot is the language of the unheard," in a number of speeches. Generally accompanied (usually prefaced) by a statement along the lines of, "I am still committed to militant, powerful, massive, non-violence as the most potent weapon in grappling with the problem from a direct action point of view."
His statement is not to say that a riot is the only way, but that when riots occur we should take time to consider what it is that is being said in the "language" of a riot. It is an entreaty to consider intolerable conditions that are represented by the particular riots that America was confronting at the time.
He tends to follow the quote up by asking "And what is it America has failed to hear?" and then illustrates his point with examples of what sort of injustice poor people of color have encountered in their lives in recent decades.
Note: none of this in any way invalidates the X-Men parallels. I totally understand and agree that the parallels are woven throughout X-Men. I am only quibbling with Carl stating that Dr. King was essentially giving in to an inevitability of violence as the only solution. Some did, Dr. King did not. Dr. King may have been right or wrong in his notion. But that wasn't the point Dr. King was making.

Technically the mutant race aren't fighting to be recognized as humans, but people. Mutants are genetically distinct from humans and belong to a separate species that nonetheless deserve "human" rights; the crux of the argument being that you don't have to be human to be a person. The court case was to establish that the X-Men could be considered toys because they didn't technically belong to the human species, not that they were animalistic or subhuman. Weaselly? Absolutely, but not hypocritical.

My problem with mutants being an allegory for marginalized groups and how they work within the marvel universe is how marvel continuously pushes the idea that mutants are completely distinct from other super humans (Even though the only thing that makes them different from them is just the x gene), and how marginalized groups functionally have the same physical potential to do things as any other person. The problem with the allegory is that a person being concerned over people being able to spontaneously explode, read your thoughts, or becoming god wouldn’t be unreasonable. Real marginalized groups don’t hold the sort of power (Obviously).
Funny enough, Zootopia has this same problem. Minority groups are presented as predators who are physically stronger and have predatory instincts while the dominant class are herbivores.
Both unintentionally create scenarios what show marginalized people as a threat, by putting extreme physical power imbalances in the story and emphasizing their intrinsic differences.
I’m not saying the X-men are bad, or that they’ve never had good social commentary, they have. It’s just that the concept doesn’t entirely fit with the world building of the rest of the marvel universe, and that it falls short in being an allegory to an extent.

He prefaces the quote, in some of his speeches, by noting why he still believes non-violence is the answer. A part of that prefacing is done by making the point that "I'm absolutely convinced that a riot merely intensifies the fears of the white community while relieving the guilt."
He wants us to consider what root causes resulted in the violence. He is not asking us to mindlessly consider violence an inevitability of oppression, nor as the only or best option.

A species is a group of similar individuals who can interbreed to form fertile offspring.
Quicksilver is the child of Magneto and a human woman in the comics. Quicksilver also has a daughter called Luna.
If quicksilver can have kids, his parents are the same species. So magneto must be considered human. If he is, then most other surely can be.

The civil rights allegory breaks down due to the super powers giving them far greater destructive potential than a normal human.
I think that RWBY handled it better (initially) with the faunus, (humans with one animal trait). They got a physical advantage like night vision, better hearing, or even a tail that can act like a 3rd hand. These traits never elevated them exponentially above the regular humans.

    • @eramurez8548
      @eramurez8548 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's not a perfect allegory. but the marvel universe still others them specifically. Other heroes with just as much power and arguably many more destructive get a pass. The change in mutants DNA is basically the only difference but they get thrown under the bus. And that unsubstantiated difference is s all they need to treat them as sub human.

I've always thought X-men was a very clumsy commentary on real-life issues. Sure there's a thread you can follow and explore in a story with those kinds of characters and settings. But you can't count on every writer to be skilled enough to do that well. And it's always going to be more work to write around certain issues (And again, not every writer can be counted on to do that well). So it's like these people who are supposed to be bad people because of the real-life counterparts they represent have more justification and are more reasonable because it's not just skin color or whatever but is actually mutants with supernatural abilities.
Take the little girl who can walk through walls. There's the real-world commentary part of it. You could say she stands in for a minority and powerful people or governments will only see that and not the individual. But it's impossible to ignore there's a little more going on than just skin color or nationality or etc in the X-Men stories. It's legitimately dangerous for a governing body or police force or military to not be able to do something as simple as secure an area. Protect the kinds of secrets they should be protecting. Etc. Insert almost any plot involving people in power that shows up in those stories.
And I'm being careful with those words btw. I'm not simping or shilling, just saying there's some stuff I think a government or representative should be able to keep confidential when there's a good reasons for it. Some things they _ought_ to be doing... So their point still stands, you know? It doesn't really end at "You shouldn't be bigoted". What they're saying isn't that baseless. And I don't want ever to think these sorts of things about people who exist in place of real-world bigots, warmongers, etc. The X-Men world gives them that gift imo, so even if they take things too far you can still see where they're coming from. Which is a problem when the real world version it represents is just skin color or whatever.

The simultaneous metaphor for human evolution speeding up and genetic mutation being a natural part of adaptation doesn't work if they aren't human. Neither does the irony of the people v mutants basically being a war to not keep evolving but traditionalize our current state and stay mired in the same misfortunes we currently endure.

It's actually kinda funny how Karl completely misunderstood Marvel's stance here. Marvel didn't go to court to say that mutants are less than human, Marvel went to court to say that mutants are better than human. They are Homo SUPERIOR.
