  • The M249 light machine gun, formerly designated the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon and formally written as Light Machine Gun, 5.56 mm, M249, is the American adaptation of the Belgian FN Minimi, a light machine gun manufactured by the Belgian company FN Herstal. The M249 is manufactured in the United States by the local subsidiary FN Manufacturing LLC in South Carolina and is widely used in the U.S. Armed Forces. The weapon was introduced in 1984 after being judged the most effective of a number of candidate weapons to address the lack of automatic firepower in small units. The M249 provides infantry squads with the high rate of fire of a machine gun combined with accuracy and portability approaching that of a rifle.

This would be perfect if there was something like a text or a voice explaining every action

I always wondered how the cartridges were de-linked, fed into the chamber, the empty brass tossed one way, and the left over links the other. Very interesting! So it’s the “pawls” grabbing the next cartridge to feed into the chamber that just pushes the links out… Slick engineering. The entire design of beltfeds is crazy simple yet crazy complex at the same time. 🤔😵‍💫🤓…

It looks a lot like the PKM but with a different belt feed system. Even the AK-47 that inspired the PKM shares a lot of similarities with the M1 Garand. It's amazing how similar gun design's are internally. There's only like a half dozen different designs for machine guns and automatic rifles out there.

If it aint broke dont fix it! Also, its very hard to improve upon a browning or stoner design, that is why the US just, well doesnt.
Edit: I already know somebody is going to say “oh well John Garand engineered the m1 garand”. Yes. Clearly. I wasn’t referring to the garand.

The bolt looks similar to an AK bolt.
