Wiltshire Man Visits the Pendon Museum with the Vintage Motorcycle club

  • To be honest this visit was fair more interesting than the title, thumbnail and video portray. The scale and man hours and attention to detail is simply Staggering.
The museum was started by John Ahern who could see the rapid changes to the villages and he wanted to preserve as best he could what he saw before it was all lost. He did this by creating scale models of villages, cottages and lanscapes. Simply AMAZING. I would encourage anyone with even a slightly sentimental attitude and love for the land to go and see this for yourself.
Here's a link to Dickies first ride on the new Himalayan 450
    • The good, the bad, and...
With my motorcycling I am gravitating more toward the lower powered easier and cheaper to maintain and run and handle type of motorcycling.
Who wants to go fast? Not me any more so my old 411 is just the perfect bike for me it's all brought and paid for and owes me nothing but still does everything I need it to do.

The models were fantastic. I also love the visions of village life before our modern times. Daily life may have often been hard by our standards, but to me it was such a beautiful architectural period.

I think I'm a bit sentimental about old things and old ways of life and about the countryside Brian. A good thing I think. Apparently it's a family thing as a Great Uncle once wrote a poem about his childhood back in the late Victorian times and he was very sentimental:)

Dad had a Triumph 500 speed twin with a sprung hub. He bought it brand new Amethyst Red! He and my mum travelled all over the country on it, Silverstone and back from Coniston in the Lake District, including watching a full days racing at the British GP (cars)....no motorways then Sandy to avoid!!
He actually wanted a Vincent Comet but as he was borrowing some of the money from his father...he said you're not having a Vincent!!

What a lovely little ride out. Slow speeds and B-roads - works for me.
By the way, that hill does indeed have a Hillfort on it, Mr. Wiltshire. Check out: Wittenham Clumps (Sinodun Hills). And that little stream at Shillingford is known locally as “the River Thames” (o; - one of the historic Thames crossing points South of Oxford.

Hahaa well it might be the thames but the proper Thames flows a few miles further north at Eaton Hastings. Looking on Google maps the brook is un named and probably the result of many springs, seem to terminate in a lake Nr Baulking. I'll have to check out Whittenham clumps

That looks a bit like 'Last of The Summer Whine' - Hell's Grandad's Chapter. You'd have liked a natter with my old Dad. He worked his way through bike after bike, including , by , Panther Velocette, Vincent, Triumph , Norton , Ariel Square Four, BSA's , Brough Superior, Matchless, and as yet not mentioned, one close to your heart Royal Enfield ... He went through loads, often several at a time, until the demands of kids and a 'family car' usurped their place in the garage.
That mod;e railway is amazing. In a way calling it a 'model railway' understates it. In some ways it seems to be a rural topographical equivalent to the Cistine Chapel... Bloody amazing in scope and detail, and in 3 dimensions.

Sandy about 18months ago in a Bishopstone? video you did I suggested Pendon museum in the comments, what you missed in this video is ever single building in the Vale layout (upstairs) is from the Vale, Wanborough to Wantage, the Australian used to live in Wanborough. go to the website and tick off how many buildings you have passed or even appeared in passing of your videos. The Harrow inn Wanborough at the museum there's a picture in the guide book or postcard that shows the rear view, (the way from swindon up the high street) I used to work at the garage opposite we had the same view BUT we could see a new flat roof but we could see where the old tin roof had been attached to the wall as per the museum model. Got to be a revisit and a ride out to view the real life buildings in the Vale. Thanks Sandy

      Very interesting Tim.
I did see a lot of the local landscape including South Marston and acorn bridge but didn't film too much due to the flickering lights . Roye England when he first came to England lived close to Swindon so no doubt that's why a lot of his model buildings are based on this area. I think he lived in Wanborough for a time.
I would certainly like to go back but take my DSLR camera as it would be a better tool for capturing the details:)
He took a photograph of Badbury village in the mid to late 1930's and captured a boy in shorts, I believe this boy was my father in law. The family lived in a thatched cottage close by. You can see the boy in this video of badbury, the video will start with the boy in the foreground. The boy I believe is Ronald Shaw now deceased (my wife's father)
