How I Got the Highest Rank in Magic
"the second we started playing it the meta game drastically changed" is probably the most relatable sentence I've heard in a while
I actually tried MTGA, liked it a lot. Built a meta deck, liked it was having fun. A week later BB drops and half the deck is unplayable and the game has no dust system to recover value. Immediate permanent quit for me.
@@mungobestmage yep, it was your mistake to craft a deck, which won't survive rotation. Read before you do anything new, I guess
@yavivanov6650 no deck survives forever in MTG standard its a fast rotating format. My issue is the fact I'm paying for virtual proxies of cards and have no ability to exchange them in any way. No trading, no buyback, no dust mechanic, nothing. I'm just left with dead weight in my virtual collection forever. If they had a mechanic where I could port in physical cards I own in the real world, this problem wouldn't exist but they just can't resist double dipping on their customers.
The meta didn't actually change. The matchmaking algorithm matches you based on the cards in your deck, along with considering things like rank, so he just got matched with opponents who had similar deck ratings according to the matchmaker.
Seriously. On Arena we even call high tier deck matchmaking "hell queue", though it's only really noticeable in unranked formats like Brawl, where the matchmaker doesn't consider things like rank.
@@marginis Matchmaking value is only for unranked formats, its not a system used in ranked. There is probably still hidden MMR though, it just dosen't take your deck into account.
"I need to grind to super high rank in a very competitive format in order to join a very very casual format of MTG with the homies" is a super wild way to tackle a challenge.
its not really the reason why, he just wants to make a vid grinding to mythic on arena. he just wanted a storyline
real
He just wants to make sure he understands everything fully. And is used to doing these types of videos, lol
@@Minifig3D It was a joke, I respect the dedication.
People who start the game playing 1v1 are drastically better at the game than people who start by playing commander, so this is good.
Tax write off goes hard with this one
liver still gone
I remember during one of the coaching sessions someone in chat said they reached mythic with rabbits. CGB refused to believe it.
It was Rarran from the future trying to save his past self all that heartache
Reaching Mythic with top 3 BO1 deck?
Unheard of.
I did it with squirrels tbh - took a week.
The full magic experience is climbing with mono red until you can afford a deck with a lower win chance.
*Arena experience
27:26 Rarran learns one of the most important rules of MTG. Math is for blockers.
I won many games because the aggro player didn't do math and I did XD
From "can they block if I attack a planeswalker" to mythic in a month is one hell of an accomplishment. God damn, Rarran.
Also, these streams with CGB were some of the most enjoyable content for me in a while. Literally binged them. Please, do more collabs with him or voxy, playing magic!
A thought occurs: The amount of organs you parted with in this video could have been used to fund a HS deck tracker :D
No, he will never sell his soul
A 2-day subscription on the most affordable deck tracker, more like.

Best of Three is kinda where it's at for competitive Magic, sideboarding adds so much depth to deckbuilding it's unreal.
Sideboarding can be hard for newer players in fairness.
i mean, yea, but also you tend to see the same couple of techs past a certain point.
Apply to all TCGs honestly. Boarding to counter your opponent's decks and AND to counter your opponent's counter to your decks it's such a mind game where a good player could flop hard if they're bad at boarding.
Best of 3 is necessary because of how magic is designed. Needing to draw lands and spells leads to a much wider variety of outcomes compared to a fixed mana system. Bo1 on arena helps even things out with the hand smoother but this only helps linear aggressive decks like modern red. A deck that traditionally gets much worse in game 2 of a Bo3 because now you can respond to the strategy.
@@CatManThreeIt definately is! I found when starting I would build a deck without a sideboard or sometimes just a few cards i thought my be interesting to try. As you play and see other decks you begin to see where your weaknesses are and that's when you get a better idea of what to sideboard.
I’ve been playing this game off and on for 30 years, still nothing more enjoyable than watching a new player dive deep or a returning player find their groove again. I know it’s expensive, but my other hobby was golf and when I broke my wrist Magic came back into my life.
Part of plateauing at Platinum is that up until then the game was giving you 2 points per win and 1 point removed per loss. So now you actually need over 50% winrate to climb.
The PLATeau was really tough to watch. Bro's morale bottomed out
38:35 Ironically one standard deck in paper costs about this much.
on the flipside you can actually sell your paper cards after you are done playing.
@@Charles_Markus Ha, "done playing"...
Though, honestly, I wonder if that does make it easier to convince yourself you want to stop playing MtG? Imagine if somebody gave you money for every addiction you beat.
@@buttonasas I played magic from 1994 till around 2016. WotC / Ha$bro made it very easy to quit , because the commercial direction they took. I only play some chaos draft or cube draft now with old cards and only a few times a year
@@Blackadder75 I also play mainly cube draft and other limited formats but I must say I like new cards a LOT better than old cards. They're much more friendly and fun (certainly more fun than popping off or stalemating - cube often devolves into those extremes)
Just like Avatar Aang with the 4 elements, Rarran is on a journey to master all TCGs
The question is, what games are left to crown him the TCGatar
@@AnnoLP there's still Yu-Gi-Oh, but I don't think Rarran will be touching that one
Totally expected to skip through the video to see if you got it, but your storytelling made me watch the entire thing! Great Video and congratz on hitting Mythic!
Rarran did in fact get good
Congratulations, and thank you for the hours of entertainment this journey has blessed us with!
The fact that you spent 500 dollars on a digital card game and you still only have access to a fraction of the cards is insane.
time is money, friend..... to quote some warcraft goblins . I spend €0 on MTGA, I didn't even buy the welcome bundle. Yet I have thousands of rare and mythic cards , all F2P.
Note I am not even a regular player, I have skipped many sets and do not play for months sometimes... If I played all year round I could easily have 5,000 rares by now
Well Magic does have a metric shit ton of cards and Rarran went in spending money in most horrendously inefficient way possible.
I still believe it's a much better F2P experience than Hearthstone. Or at least what it used to be, I heard they made some changes in recent years.
@@Blackadder75 I also spend nothing and can make about 90% of what I want, I used to play HS spending £35 per a set gaining maybe two useable legendaries (compared to MTGA which gives you rares and mythics and wildcards constantly.)
I recently installed HS again to find that the Battlepass is 'payed entrance only' MTGA gives you enough gold and play tokens that a few drafts earn enough premium currency (gems) to buy the next Battlepass and genuinely play for free.
@@KM-qr4li we present to you: The Whale!
@@matevzgolob6782 I just came back to hearthstone after not playing for years and so far f2p has been great. They give you "returning packs" which have a bunch of cards from the last few expansions, also a bunch of free packs. I got something like 80 packs + 100 cards + my choice of a tier 1 constructed deck all for free.
38:04 "The master gave rarran a mythic rank ?? Rarran is a free elf!!!"
I am so excited for a commander show with you in it
18:43 "even though there was a couple of mistakes here and there"
Sir, I was there. Don't you lie to the good people now. Tell them how many misplays you made because you were freaking out about the rope.
It was great by the way. I could /feel/ CGB alternate between laughing and cringing through my monitor.
The least backseating chatter just arrived
@@missingdays1 Hey I didn't backseat at all. I felt the actual pain at the misplays but I kept it to myself thank you very much.
Rarran's body is just a shell now, completely devoid of any organs.
"It has the potential to win the game because it is so aggressive" describing the best deck on ladder is one of the sentences of all time
genuinely so excited to see u play commander. congrats on mythic!!
100% agree that the Arena economy is atrociously bad for new players. I don't agree about the mana system though. I think the land system is quietly a stroke of genius, but you have to get pretty deep into deckbuilding before you start to apprecaite just how much it adds to the game. It can be very frustraiting, but it adds a shocking amount of depth to the game that's extremely hard to see at first. I loved the series though, and I hope we get to see more Magic on your channel!
You want to build a real competitive deck here? Better grind dailies for a year so you can pull packs and hope you get what you need to build the new meta... or pull some good red cards and get to winning with a cheap to upgrade shell.
I'm so proud of you Rarran congratulations, most of players stops in the platiniun like me because the reward is only two miserable boosters and you have show us how is difficult and frustrating is to become a mythic but not only that. You have show us with perceverance and pacience that anyone can go anywhere even with low time experience and about the budget you have expended think about the programmers, designers, technicians and orthers employeers that maintaining the app, so your money has been used for a good cause.
I absolutely loved watching this, because when i first started a handful of months ago i was in the same situation as you. I tried so many decks, watched so many youtube videos and finally started to figure out what i was doing with a mono black deck and when i hit mythic for the first time i didnt even want to play a game in mythic rank because i was scared to lose it. Thanks for the quality video man.
It's funny that he wants to reach mythic to get the confidence to play EDH, the most casual format there is, when most of the EDH players couldn't even reach Plat or Diamond without Mono Red. :D
Kind of. And then you have those that play cEDH that cant do that even with red(Yet can beat 3 other ppl at table on turn 3 :D)
I think it makes sense. You don't really want to derail a show like that by being a complete noob, so playing enough to reach Mythic seems like a fair goal to do before going on a show
That's a pretty big misconception. If anything the only thing an EDH player would struggle with is constructed deckbuilding and meta knowledge. Hitting Mythic isn't hard with any decent deck. You can get to plat with like a 30% winrate.
I think it's s funny that he thinks knowing Magic is what will make him good at Commander.
voxy must be in the commander game too
If Rarran and Gordon Ramsey had a child “WHERE IS THE LAND SAUCE?!?!?!”
I cannot wait to see how he tackles the social aspect of commander tho. 😅
"Wait, wait wait... If you give me one more turn, I'll attack him instead of you!"
"Glad to hear it, but I'll save you the effort...."
Even having watched all the streams, your storytelling skills kept me captivated the whole time. You've gotten really good at that.
Also congrats. Hope you enjoy commander!
“It’s turrnnnn 3” flinnnnggg
Honestly impressive! I have played for years and never hit mythic. That is a really fast growth speed! Hope you stick with the game and we get to see some more mtg games on your channel :)

“I was one win away from mythic”
*8 minutes of the video remain*
just started MTG, and coming from HS, why'd no one tell us their cards look so damn cool???
If you like blood and gore look up macabre waltz specifically the 2015 one.
30 years of art!
It got everything for everyone one! (No drama ever spark from this at all. Nope)
Because HS cards appeal to children while MTG cards appeal to everyone
Bro, the art in this game is INSANE. I could look up specific sets and just look at the art for hours.
This has been a blast to watch!
I also started playing MTG Arena recently and finding all the vods was awesome. Didn't catch a live stream, but watched everything like 2 weeks behind.
Seeing all the similarities was great. I also made it with rabbits 2 days ago. So seeing these last matches felt so familiar :D
Looking forward to more magic content! Cheers.
I love your storytelling ! It's so engaging, even as someone with 0 MTG knowledge
Was following the grind closely :) Looking forward to that commander collab!
So, predictions on Rarren's commander when he inevitably plays EDH?
Well as much is i would like to see Raran playing a Storm Deck i would find it funnier if he gets a Group Slug or Group Hug Deck, like why do i let you guys draw Cards or what is Politics?
I think he'd like some kinda prison deck
Based on what he pulled from packs on stream, Sidisi or Meren seem like the most likely picks.
@babatazyah oh damn I'd love go see Sidisi
Otter
38:23 Congrats. Making it to mythic in your first month is a feat.
00:04 Rarran lied as easily as he breathe
Rarran when you play Commander. Be prepared to be annoyed in ways you never thought possible.
Finally. Rarran has escaped the hole, and embraced an adult's card game.
I really understand that you don't like lands in Bo1 Standard, but I think in older formats and Bo3 lands become much more enjoyable to play with. Beeing able to play fetchlans + shocklands or surveil lands and not immedately lose, when you get mana screwed or flood, mitigate a lot of the downsides. Plus there are many busted lands, which are really fun to play with. That's why Timeless is my favorite fromat (and you have actual decision making as early as turn 1).
From a deckbuilding standpoint it's also way better than HS system imo, because you are not locked into playing some cards only in a specific class, while also having dimishing returns for multicolored decks, such as having to pay a lot of life for shocklands or hatecards for greedy manabases (e.g. Bloodmoon).
That being said for learning the game, Standard Bo1 is probably by far the best way to start. It's just not Magic at it's best imo.
How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Lands System
10:41 that was most Canadian holyyy I have ever heard I love it hahahaha 🇨🇦
The curse of 1-win-away. It always hits.
Nice! Veteran aggro player here who sometimes dabbles in midrange (aggro+control). Love watching you go through the same albeit speed ran version of what most magic players end up doing. Play an aggro deck. Get tilted when op has all the answers. Decide to try more controlling decks. Realize it sucks trying to have all the answers and its better to be asking the questions/presenting the problems. Aggro player for life.
I loved the WHERE ARE THE LAAAAAAANDDDSSS. Gotta love going on a 10 game win streak and then getting land screwed 3 games in a row.
Idk if you’re gonna read this or do this challenge again. But, unless what you’re playing pre combat affects combat. It’s almost always strictly better to play your spells in main phase 2, opponents operating with less information
Loved your magic streams! Love from Belgium ❤
Yay MtG. Couldn't watch all the streams so a summary is amazing
The wild thing about MTGs economy is most decks run like 12 rares just in lands. Youll always have plenty of everything else; even mythic
Unless you play timeless, then you have 40 rares and no mythics
@@Dragostorm21 Timeless is for the established players that have been building up cards over years.
@@Greg501- you still will run out of mythic wildcards tho, even historic has less mythic wildcard tax
@@Dragostorm21 You mean the more cards are in a format the more good high rarity cards there are and you run out of wildcards? Yeah, I wish I could so easily have a good Timeless deck... imagine if you could turn 3 copies of any mythic/rare into one copy of any other mythic/rare.
@@Greg501- The format is unusually high on mythics due to special guests. I agree with you on the last part, i'd literally only play timeless then
The misplay on the game before Mythic is so classic. We've all been there! Congrats bro! One of us!
Now that I have been to your lives for these types of videos, it makes me appreciate the youtube experience even more. Thank you rarran! Also I was in there day 1 telling you to play rabbits. I'm glad it worked out in the end.
Arena is the most HS way to play Magic. Which is bad because HS was designed to be HS and not Magic.
Standard bo1 laddering is just not where Magic shines. But it makes Hasbro money sooo
Never been this confused, trying to keep track on what's happening in a card game before. (first time ive seen the game played) super complicated game to understand but probably super rewarding when you do.
Magic is deeply complex and with the highest skill ceiling of any card game out there. Because of that though, the skill floor is much higher than what it is in hearthstone or pokemon. Give it a shot if you can, way better game than hearthstone imo
cangratulations, well deserved, you put a lot of effort into this
Awesome video Rarran! So glad you showed the ups and the downs with your thoughts over time. It's very authentic and fun!
I can confirm that platinum hell is a thing in HS too.
30:48 I can only imagine how many times he made that joke on stream lmaooo
Congratulations Rarran! Nice to see your journey. I hope the money you spent comes back tenfold with your MtG content.
Sick video dude, the streams vods were great to watch. Genuinely looking forward to seeing you on the commander show!
man gotta say i've really been loving your new videos. you're slowly but surely becoming one of my favourite content creators. god bless your soul
Can't wait to see you play the Commander show!
This is was so fun to watch. Now to enjoy magic as it was intended irl, you need to get into best of 3 and possibly try higher power formats like Pioneer (Explorer on arena). Paper magic is more fun, but as far as arena goes, Explorer is much higher power level.
Also in Bo3, the whole obsession with mono red fades because you can sideboard cards to easily deal with them.
I really think you should consider giving the Pokemon TCG another chance. The game is in a really good place right now, with a ton of decks being completely viable, and for less than $30 I was able to craft EVERY SINGLE CARD that appeared at the recent Worlds event. Literally 16 different decks, with all their different tech options. It's hard to overstate how good the economy is in Pokemon TCG Live, it's almost like they're giving it away.
Damn haha good job dude that’s nutty 🙌🏼
Now we need to see Rarran play the real MTG experience: MTGO playing a format like modern
I finally hit legend in Hearthstone this month, first time since starting all the way back in closed beta, with a self-cooked Big Spell Mage variant.
I get what you mean with the nerves. I was SO bad during my games in Diamond 1 and SO tilted when i was on Diamond 1 with 3 stars and a Pain warlock dropped 11/11 in stats on me on Turn 2, obviously knocking me off of the threshhold.
Platinum definitely has the most deck diversity.
This was so dope! Congrats on reaching mythic :)
I can't wait for you to play Commander with CGB, I'm sure you're gonna love the format, it's tons of fun!
As someone who has gotten bottom mythic 20+ times, congratulations. It wasn't the smoothest run but with a weasel and a falcon being your teachers, and you doing it in bloomburrow, I am pretty sure you count as a Disney Princess and a card carrying card gamer.
It took me 6h from D4 to Mythic with a dumb discard deck with 4x Rottenmouth Viper, 4x Bandit's Talent, 4x Nezumi-Informant and 4x Psychic Whorl. Add some removal that leaves stuff on the board for the vipers and some targeted removal for planeswalkers and creatures and some more discard cards and you're good to go.
It's so frustrating to play against if you have a decent hand. Every 10th player just concedes when you start playing, but i recommend to not start discarding if you have the first turn. If the enemy plays a little smart they can recover unless you have the absolute nuts on hand.
The decks stats were 47wins / 24 lose when i reached mythic.
First time mythic btw. I never reached Diamond before that either. It took me two weeks to reach Diamond from Silver with a blue/white control deck and 6 hour to reach mythic from that xD
Im gonna watch the hell out of your Commander games Rarran :)
I can't believe I never thought of the "mitecaller" joke until rarran said it
Halfway through and I hear that Rarren on a commander show is on the line and IM INVESTED I NEEEEEED IT
Rarran making me feel a lot better about myself fr.
Only a 38 minute video? That is impressive for how much footage you had from livestreams, excited to watch!
Awesome video. Magic is undoubtedly expensive. Especially if you don’t play consistently because of time commitment and other things but it does get cheaper the long you play for, especially if you are an above average player/drafter.
MTG Arena rewards longevity - I'm into my 3rd year following my return and have no problems crafting any deck I want - the key thing is little and often for games
Coming from CGB's subscribers, and love to see the climb. You have a new subscriber, good sir!
I watched all the stream vods of this and it was a really good time
I hope to get to watch you do this again ❤
"Why should I play the control deck and make all the decisions, when I can just play aggro, hit face, and make my opponent make the stupid decisions."
Proud of this evolution. We start our magic careers by hitting face until some bully decides to counterspell us. We think control is unbeatable and it can be. Then we reach the stage of true enlightenment and know that Unga Bunga Smash is the way
Me currently at platinum 3 feeling slightly better knowing that a pro has the same struggles coming into Magic right now that I’m going through.
I cannot wait to see the commander episode lmao
26:41 this is exactly how I feel about MTG, verbatim
Rarran&CGB commander night?!!??? Hell fuckin yes! Finally rarran in commander!!! So fuckin hype!!
Wow! selesnya is the secret, the first time i got to mythic it was with selesnya enchantments when it was off meta (during BRO).
Congrats rarran !
Most mtg players dont grind anywhere close to that high !
Did this man hit us with a Mitten Squad reference.
holy the rarran magic video is here
Kind of surprised he didn't try the absolutely cracked rakdos lizards deck that's been floating around.
11:15 "Welcome to summoner's rift"
Making a deck in MTG is expensive but you can always find some solid budget deck to craft if you're a new player and then progressively grind towards a more elaborate one
Nice one, congrats. I do hope you try best of 3 at some point, you might like it even more. Bo1 favors aggro strategies.
i made a black-green tempo deck that just revolved around getting phyrexian obliterator + bushwack to resolve and i got mythic in like 2 weeks. cards like shakedown heavy and awakened sleeper carry my earlygame, then i just blow up their lands on turn 5. i think i only ever got someone's hp to 0 a handful of times because most people scoop before it gets to that point.
I was on that TH-cam chat and the problem was it was classic magic players criticizing other mtg players gameplay, on top of that we always pointed every sequencing error so yes it was triggering but welcome magic ❤.
The banger is here. Can't wait for more MTG content!
