Very, very good run. RNG was about as good as I could ask for, and the only big execution mistakes were ~4-5 seconds in 5-Ghost House and ~2-3 seconds in 8-7, with a few smaller mistakes scattered around.
Throughout the run, you'll see me jumping around a lot and bouncing off enemies while in the shell. Normal running speed is 3.0 pixels/frame and sliding in the shell is 2.75 px/fr (~8% slower), so I try to stay out of the shell as much as possible to go fast. Bouncing on enemies is one way to stay out of the shell, but there is also a glitch(?) I use to stay at full speed: if you jump within the first few frames of landing on the ground, Mario does a double/triple jump and stays at full speed. Good example of both of these at 15:45 to 15:55.
Comments on the run:

1-2: could have been faster, but 354 is still good
1-T: this level is cycle based, and I did the "fast cycle". It's possible to go one cycle faster, called the "TAS cycle", but I don't attempt that on runs that get the shell in 1-2. Here's what it looks like: / 97310940
5-1: no mistakes
5-2: no mistakes
5-3: no mistakes
5-GH: big mistake. You can't grab onto a vine while moving upward, and I whiffed it pretty hard
8-1: no mistakes
8-2: got the awesome trick in the second room where you can hit the switch without stopping. Unfortunately the water strider guy trolled me in the next room, had to slow down a bit
8-T1: got a bad pixel stop, just barely made the cycle. Rest of the level was good
8-3: bad pipe entrance at the end, doesn't lose much time though
8-4: no mistakes
8-C: no mistakes
8-5: no mistakes
8-6: no mistakes. Sorry the video was laggy- watch 8-6 in my old pb if you want to see how it's done
8-7: missed the second koopa bounce, lost 2-3 seconds. Rest was fine
8-8: no mistakes
8-T2: no mistakes. Did the autoscroller skip which only saves ~8 seconds
8-BC: very happy I only lost 0.3 seconds; the BC in my old pb was pretty much perfect - เกม

I used to do a really bad speed run of this game. I’d restart and try get to the end quickly with the cannon and whatnot. I’d be extra slow on world 8 cause I’m bad. But I kinda wished I kept doing it

1. The last digit also determines the number of fireworks set off ( if cleared at 133; 3 fireworks)
2. The number of fireworks determines the type of special level you get :
If cleared with time 11, 22, 33 then you get an item house 🔴
If cleared with time 44, 55, 66 then you get a 1 - up house 🟢
If cleared with time 77, 88, 99 then you get a Mega Mushroom house 🟡

W 8-5 is perhaps my favorite level in any Mario game. I have fond memories of learning how to run through it without slowing down a single time when I was 10. I love the music as well.

this run really was fantastic. That was by far the biggest mistake I made, and it was ~4-5 seconds lost
this was sooo good, there are only a few major misplays, the rest was done beautifully, especially so many of the harder jump sequences in the later levels, you make it look like TAS at some points :s

Fun fact: if you beat the bowsers with a mini Mario power up you will automatically grow to regular Mario (the same as the one at the end of this speedrun).
Incredible. I have never been one for speed runs but I love is game and got curious. I was amazed instantly. Watching you play and seeing how perfectly you made jumps or jumped over enemy’s was absolutely astonishing. My jaw was on the floor the whole time.

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for inspiring me to run my favorite childhood game. At first I thought I'd wait for you to upload an any% tutorial, but I've managed to pick up all the strats from your videos(this and the previous PB) and by practicing for months. My current PB is 24:18, and I'm grinding for sub 24:00 as of now.... wish me luck! I wish more people knew about this category, especially after the discovery of blue shell RNG manip that made any% a lot easier(this doesn't affect me, I play on a DSi lol)

Thanks! Unfortunately, I don't have any equipment to record my runs... I have the time to speedrun for my own enjoyment, but I'm also trying to juggle schoolwork and other hobbies at the same time, so I don't intend on recording runs(not that I don't want to, it's a bad habit of mine that I get extremely invested into things very easily). I have a quick rundown of my run, though I was very sloppy with timing lol (stopwatch on my iPhone)
1-1 through 5-GH: no mistakes, ahead of WR by 2-3 seconds
8-1 through 8-5: also no mistakes. Didn't attempt fast 8-2 as that requires a lot more practice
8-6: played risky, lost the shell on the orange platform :( lost 6 seconds or so
8-7: horrible. I didn't have backup strats for this level, and I tried grabbing flower along the way. Wasted 25+ seconds with sloppy platforming
8-8: fine. Had to play safe as I'm not used to having fire in the beginning. Lost 5 seconds
8-T2: didn't triple jump on spike damage boost section, lost around 2-3 seconds
8-BC: played safe for PB. Bowser jump first try.
Quick question, how do you time the jumps on the orange platform at 8-6? I can't quite get it to be as smooth as you, and I usually enter the pipe at around 368.
I understand about not being able to record. That's the only real drawback about speedrunning this game :/
I'll try to answer your question about 8-6, but it's kind of hard because I can't watch exactly what you do.
For referencing video for this response, I'll be using my old PB's 8-6 ( th-cam.com/video/TBFQ5Yx6QQc/w-d-xo.html ) because it's slightly cleaner and the recording doesn't have frame drops.
When you ask about the orange platform, I'm assuming you mean the 4 rows of orange platforms starting around 16:49 in the video. The key is to get enough speed to morph into the shell before jumping through the third row. To do this, you need to not hit up on the second row of platforms while jumping through it. Hopefully this helps, but I think my description of that is kind of confusing.
Yeah, the last portion of the level was exactly what I meant. Thanks so much for the advice, I've had a lot of trouble playing that section. Will definitely grind some more.

One more very important note is that you don't need to reset if you don't get lucky and get the blue shell in 1-2. I have a very consistent setup to get it in the red toad house every time that I can show you if you want.

When I was pretty young I played this game a lot on my DSi and I had the time of my life. Recently I picked up a 2DS and this game, and it’s been a serious blast from the past. Already got all star coins spent and on my way to max points. Might try speedrunning it. This run looks really fun. Only a couple minutes behind a TAS I saw, which is pretty insane. Good job.

Besides that, the best way to learn is by watching a bunch of runs from the leaderboard. It's good to watch runs of varying skill level, not just the top runs. Altabiscuit's run from SGDQ 2016 is also good because it shows some backup strats. You will see that most of the top runs get the blue shell from the red block in 1-2, but it's very important to note that you can also get it from the red toad house every time very easily.
For practicing, I recommend getting a completed file (beat the game, watch the credits, save when it asks you after the credits). That makes it really easy to practice every level. Then watch the tutorials and runs, and try to do what you see. And feel free to ask me any questions.

I remembered there was another half the world map underneath the menu I never got to. Although I never finished the game I had two castles left but my ds switched off and never switched back on again. I remember playing these maps for years having no intention for continuing to the hell world. Ohh the nostalgia

I remember when I played this game a lot, my sister somehow found out how to delete saves (she was like 5) and she kept doing it when she could use the DS. I kept completing mario again and again and one time I remember playing for the ENTIRE day, from waking up to going to sleep. That day I managed to complete the game from 1-1 to 8-BC without using a single skip. It might not seem that impressive now that I say it, but for 8 year old me, this was the achievement of a lifetime.

I played this game on 2018 or 2019 when I found the DSi and the game. I finished entirely and knew how to get World 6 and 7. Now I wanna replay it.

TAS cycle used to be harder with shell than with small mario, but Yiply found a new strat that makes it easier with the shell.

You really tripped up on the world five mansion. Overall incredible job and congratulations. Just three things I noticed on the level. Clearly there was the miss to grab the vine. But I sae two others. Once at 6:38 where you just missed the jump to the next stairs, and at 7:40 where you missed a jump over the block and killed your momentum. Again these all together only cost you like 7 seconds but every second counts right?

What happened on the second tower in world 8 where you died. Were you trying something different out?
That's a strat we call the deathwarp. The green block snake moves really slowly, and if you run ahead of it, get the level checkpoint, then die and respawn, the block snake is up at the checkpoint with you. It saves around 10 seconds
