    Ha ha I can’t even work out what I want to do myself so cannot give advice 🤭😬 I’ve made a livingstone vest twice and it’s lovely.
    Dying your yarn with Rit. If the black dye doesn’t fully absorb after about 30 minutes, pour the water out and put fresh water in, add some more vinegar and let it sit on the heat for another 20 minutes and it should be good to go. I haven’t had any problems with bleeding, but the black is one I would err on the side of caution and do that last extra step just to make sure.
    Have fun 🥰

    I like the red for the test knit. It is a really good colour on you and Cascade 220 would show the stitches nicely. The mariniere pattern that I have on my Queue is Mon Ami Breton by Hinterm Stein but it is not a top down knit.

    I love the idea of the Norwegian yarn for the test knit. And the Sophie in Nutiden would be amazing. I think for the cashmere, something closer to- not the big oversized drop shoulders - would be beautiful.

      I think so too! I think cashmere is always nice at a finer gauge.I was just texting my daughter about the yarn shops in Oslo. I think I might try for the original yarn- it’s very reasonably priced!

    I have ordered yarn for the Tulip loop sweater as well!! So excited to knit it but have one other in queue first. The yarn I ordered is DK so might have to hold with something. I was going to do the Marseille sweater but did not like the collar so did the classic sweater (DK) with turtle neck and split hem (raglan) and added stripes - turned out great. I do think you should start your test knit first and have done early just to be safe.

      @@Lisamakes I have some hand painted yarn and will make a simple sweater - the Port sweater to show it off. also have one other sweater planed after the loop.....the Hakuji sweater for a drapey combo of merino, silk and cashmere but will finish the neck with an i-cord or tiny ribbing. Still looking for yarn to tackle the zipper sweater but I think I put it off because the zipper is scary.

    I would get the Rauma or Hillesvag for the test knit in a not too dark colour. For the striped cashmere I would find a drop shoulder pattern with the right gauge for the yarn and then copy the Marseille striping pattern. I love Nutiden! Ok, here’s what I would suggest, I would cast on the test knit in that beautiful cascade 220 right away. I would then also cast on the Nutiden in the Sophie, because that way you could do a lot of alternate the cable sweater with the mostly stockinette of the Sophie and basically kill two birds with one stone - lol. Anyhow, whatever you choose, I’m sure it’ll be lovely. Also, you inspired me to pull out my Nutiden , which I have yet to touch and possibly cast something on also. Xoxo

    Hi Lisa! Pretty red in Cascade. I have so much Cascade. Looks pretty with grays and blacks.
    I’ve been knitting with unspun yarn, Plutolopi. I’m enjoying it so much. My sweater is light for being bulky looking.
    Test knit: well I love red but concerned about texture showing if too dark. Norwegian yarns are beautiful and I think easy to knit with since you have so much texture in sweater. My vote: Norwegian🥰
    I love all your choices for unspun. Is cable work hard with unspun? I’m trying to recall my first unspun sweater. I’m not much help🤣

    • @Lisamakes
      @Lisamakes  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My Snowy Forest is cabled and I didn’t think the unspun made it any more difficult. I’ve never tried Plutolopi! Yes, I do worry a bit with the red about the texture. Maybe I’ll swatch with it and see. Either way, I’m getting something from .oslo. ;)

    Nutiden in Sophie first. The contrast stripes could be texture (silk/bamboo/angora) or color or both. Of the three, Sophie has the most artistic flair (which your music theater students will appreciate), while retaining a timeless quality that Diamond might not. The ribbing up the bodice sides gives a taller body line and adds warmth on the coldest days. I'd skip Kume and Diamond this time. The Kume has neat details but it's somehow not as modern. The Diamond - also beautiful - is right on trend, but when the oversized boxy trend subsides, it might just be a dated sweater that overwhelms your small frame. Plus a sweater so oversized will let too much chill onto your back when you're cold?
    Cream & black. You'll wear an elegant mariniere in this weight a ton. It can work in different outfits, from city sleek to professional to casual. Classic and lightweight enough to travel well and feel comfortable year-round. I strongly prefer Salishan. It has the right crispness. I like that it has a one-color yoke. The raglan solves the sloppy shoulder problem of the dropped-shoulder patterns; you can still make the bodice as loose as you like. If you don't want the tall neck it would work in a boatneck version, too, or adapt the Marseille's double-thick rolled crewneck. You're right about the Drops pattern. A cropped oversized shape lets in too much cold air at the bottom, and the shoulders would sag. The lovely Marseille would be too hot in thick cashmere yet too sloppy in thin gauge. It's Salishan.
    The Tulip Loop pattern is lovely. In cashmere/angora I'd consider making the cuffs in a way that you could re-fashion if you find that large long (white) cuffs too much. Could you knit the sleeves top-down? Or at least the cuffs? The same yarn would make a dynamite slipover vest - either of your two patterns - very versatile, easy to maintain, fun to layer.
    Dyeing. Dyeing black is a leap of faith. I've had black dye turn a muddy dark hue when the dye didn't take perfectly, and washing a colorwork piece would be the next risk. If you make a sample first you could reduce the risk, and you'd definitely pre-wash with dye-absorbing ("color catcher" blotter paper). But also measure the yarn length and texture to make sure the dye bath didn't shrink the yarn or alter the texture. If you want to try dye but aren't sure about black, there's like the idea of the Lumme sweater with a variegated contrast yarn. Like a variegated indigo/denim blue, which would look quite dark against a white field.
    The red Cascade 220 is a great color on you, but somehow familiar. Like you already have a very similar turtleneck? Am I misremembering? I prefer something like the Livingstone slipover for this yarn. You could wear it over a dress or blouse as a Christmas outfit, and monochromatic burgundy/oxblood/maroon/chocolate combinations are on-trend this winter anyway.
    It's a blast, making decisions for other people! So much easier than choosing projects for oneself.
    First (Oct-Nov), Nutiden in Sophie. Second, Tulip. Third (Nov-Dec), Cascade Livingstone. Last (Jan-Feb, ready by early spring) the Salishan mariniere. Can't wait to see what you come up with - even if it's something totally different!

      Thank you for all the amazing ideas! I love them. I absolutely love the idea of making the contrast textural, as well as colour, for the Sophie. It does have that artistic flair. I’m going to look closer at the Salishan and check out the existing projects. I think you’ve all scared me off the dyeing! lol! Back to the drawing board for that one. Thanks again for all the advice!

    Definitely the Sophie with the Nutiden first. The vest would be a gorgeous pop of color in red, almost like an accessory. I would use the black and white that you already have to make a striped Oslo. Don't dye...it's too risky.

      @Lisamakes  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I appreciate all these ideas- you’re right, the vest would be amazing in red! Either one! I also like the idea of casting on the Nutiden right away- the Sophie looks very quick and satisfying.
