this applies to tons of things. the build quality, time, effort and technology in the highest end products of any line were made to be the highest end of that line. There was a point in time when it was a top model, there was never a point in time where, for example, this ipad is the top model
Framing the 1st gen pencil as "from the Obama era" got a good laugh out of me. Really puts into perspective what's going on with this Apple pencil debacle.
So I bought my parents a 9th gen iPad about a week before they announced the 10th gen. My first reaction was "I knew they would release a new one as soon as I bought this", but then I saw basically everything in this video and was glad I'd just gotten the 9th gen on sale as there was nothing about the 10th gen that would offer my parents a better experience for the price
Yes, for us over age 50, the basic iPad 9th generation is the best way to go. Also, it is even better if, like you did you are able to save some money (smile...smile).
Well at least lucky for you the new one sucked lol I got my girlfriend an ipad pro then 2 months later the m1 ipad pros came out. got my mother an ipad air and 2 months later the m1 airs came out. Does anyone want m1 airpods?
A friend of mine was waiting for this one, told him to get the 9th gen. And good he did that, because when new iPad came out in my country (in eu) every older model got a nice price hike too, so in the end he saved around 80 euro on getting the 9th gen one before 10th gen came out. I like Apple a lot as a company, but with their current Euro pricing I start to wonder if my next phone will be a iPhone too after years, luckily I never imprisoned myself into their eco system too much, Apple Watch aside.
I picked up a 9th generation iPad just because the value was so much cheaper compared to anything else. I’m also starting to appreciate the old style form factor with the home button especially when I have access to the swipe to home gesture and all the other gestures anyway. My iPad is basically an on-the-go LTE TeamViewer machine for when I’m giving customers support as a tech engineer and a secondary display for my M1 MacBook Air.
@@sloppynyuszi so that the 11th gen, would get a price decrease back to 329? It will never happen in this world that you get a new “better” product for less price
What scared me was when I was in an apple store and I saw someone (who, coincidentally, said she loved everything apple) talking to a store assistant about buying the 10th gen ipad, commenting on the colours and how nice it looked. I didn't hear a single comment about value, utility or comparisons to the other models. The average consumer doesn't understand all the intricate details that make one apple product worth it and another not, and will just keep buying whatever apple puts on the shelf, doubly so if it comes with nice colours.
The 10th gen is an awkward middle child in my eyes - I have the 9th gen as it does everything I need it to and I'm not concerned about the extra wide bezels or its weaker chip, but if I wanted something better, I'd go with the Air because it lacks the compromises of the 10th gen. I think it's just a stepping stone to push a new product and make the others seem better in comparison.
@@Nurse_Xochitl Yet the Air 5 also has more than double the ram compared to a 9th gen 256GB ipad, along with USB-C THAT WORKS WELL. So its a worthwhile investment getting an ipad air 5 with 256GBs of storage, cuz its a far better upgrade if you're considering that. the 10th gen is only worth it, if you simply can't get something like an ipad air or a mini with a pencil 2, but want a device that will last longer.
The camera quality is always low on these iPads. At least the iPad Pro has a camera quality like iPhone 7. Webcam on MacBook Air is like all other laptops--compressed and poor color rendition. Basically camera tech from 2001.
I mean, you aren’t wrong. And honestly, I would’ve kept the original placement for the front-facing camera if it meant using the new Apple Pencil. Either that or make a version of the first generation Apple Pencil that uses USB-C rather than Lightning.
You're just describing the 4th gen iPad Air. Buy that instead for only $20 more than this new iPad. Check the Apple Refurbished store (quality and warranty is exactly the same as 'New')
Shocking that Apple didn't develop an add-on to the 1st gen Pencil that blends in with the original's shape and accepts the original cap. That way you can adapt it to USB-C and LEAVE IT ON.
Yeah no. that would mean people would have to buy that Apple pencil AGAIN, which would waste money. That's the exact same reason why apple kept Apple pencil 1 with the 10th gen ipad, because people would be forced to buy the Pencil 2, especially since 3rd party stylus' have been going down in quality over the years. The only time it would be viable, is if Apple made that pencil and offered a free upgrade, with user only needing to pay for shipping.
@@tsakeboya OK then i'll just go get a Galaxy s8+ tablet with 16gb of ram, up to 1tb of storage with expandable memory, a 12.in super AMOLED display, the faster than the a14 bionic chip Snapdragon Gen 1,and an S Pen that comes with it that can wirelessly charge and magnetically attaches to the back of the tablet and both the the wifi and wifi+cellular models cost onl 599 plus tax. The iPad 10th gen only gets 256gb storage, way less ram, a crappier looking LCD panel, all the bullshit to use the stylus you have to pay 99 bucks extra for, and if you want to get the model with cellular it's going to cost you 749 instead of 599 for the wifi only model. Oh and the s8+ has 3 different models with the only difference between them is the amount of ram they have.
So I have to say, I would agree that Apple seems to be cutting corners on some thing and then forgetting on others. I ended up going with the iPad Air 2022 with the M1 Chip. Gives me a lot more time before upgrading and can get through games and other processing so quickly. I ended up getting the Logitech Combo Case for it, which gave me a great keyboard (with function keys), a trackpad (which I found i used a lot more) and protects my iPad. Plus I could just keep using the Logitech Crayon I had previously on my basic iPad previously. Which is still funny that Apple doesn’t say that that the Crayon (Which requires no connection to “Pair” it like the original Pencil did), DOES still work on these devices. I don’t get all the features of the Pencil, but it’s so much more durable and lets me make notes and even basic drawing as well. “Hello Freeform, you’re so much more useful to make notes with this Crayon!”
This is not the latest Apple iPad, but it is faster than I thought. It has a great screen and it holds a charge pretty well th-cam.com/users/postUgkxhcEDB3r-OJ3_X5hQzr7k1ZofTQy1ao_U . I was concerned that it would not be powerful enough because I have several older iPads that are slow and cannot update to the latest software. But this 10th Gen has the speed and power. I do not use it for video editing, so having an M2 processor is not necessary for me. This iPad model has an A14 processor. So far so good. Glad I bought it. It helps having a larger screen compared to my Apple phone.
I bought the 9th gen a year ago, and I was blown away by the quality and speed of such a cheap device. It is honestly more than capable of doing everything I want to do and beyond. I would recommend it for everyone, and I am certain that you won't be disappointed with it at all. 9/10 tablet.
I bought a 9th gen iPad last year and I love it. At $329 (cheaper after applying a few Best Buy rewards coupons) I figured it was a good 1st iOS device for someone coming from android. The design might be a bit dated, but with a screen that size I really don't mind the "forehead" and "chin" bezels. Plus I liked that it has a home button. My only complaint would be the speakers, and even that doesn't really bother me since I use airpods most of the time anyway. It's a really good "I woke up early on a Saturday/Sunday and I want to watch a youtube video in bed until I fall back asleep" device.
Schools don't care about the screen, rounded corners and all the other crap. They will keep buying the ipad 9th gen because they want the cheapest model that they can buy in bulk without messing with second hand or refurbishing. Plus the new adaptors just create incompatibility with previes pens they have shit loads of and so they have to get tens of adaptors that especially retailers might not even carry.
students will for sure lose the little dongle thing to charge the pencil. can't imagine any education administration choosing this over the 9th gen that's cheaper and does all the things a kid needs for school
@@mihaidragnea9785 that's exactly the point newest base model product they can buy in bulk. this is just apple squeezing its education partners of more money with an unneeded refresh.
the 9th gen is better for education, an apple pencil seems to have more use cases for learning than a keyboard for things like art and such. Also like someone else said, when buying in bulk the $120 price increase adds up, just 50 of them costs an extra $6000 when going from the 9th gen to the 10th.
It would be cool, if you could discuss the camera bump on tablets as well? Especially with the cheaper models that will be used without a case, it is really annoying when trying to write with the Apple Pencil because you can not lay it flat on the table.
@@techmaester The camera on iPads and tablets in general have always been shit compared to phones. Most people never use them so idk why they're even there to begin with
Since 64GB really is not enough anymore, the real price is $599 because you have to step up to 256GB. And before Christmas a few places were selling new iPad Pro M1 128GB for $550. That's what I picked up.
Definitely a step back with using the first gen Apple Pencil, it then leans you into the old practices of using that pencil, like making sure it’s always charged.
I got this model for zoom calls, a bit of writing, netflix and reading comic books. I do enjoy the detachable keyboard and am pretty happy with it overall. If XDR came to the smaller pro models in the future I would consider upgrading.
The crazy part about it is the killer sales their base iPad once had and now they won't. I have no idea who's idea this iPad was at apple but they probably need to get fired lol
Well, it appears what, they wanted to do, was to make this version drive people to pass right over it and, instead elect to buy their older basic iPad 9th generation. Automobile companies do this, when they have a lot of last year's model frames still remaining. The big question is, what will Apple, Inc. do once they run out of their older 9th generation units to sell (smile ... smile).
@@fromnowherenobdy Well there are a lot of things that, we could say about Mr. Tim Cook but, not knowing how to make money for Apple, Inc. is not one of them. For example, Apple staff says ... we want to start selling a new larger "mac mini" called the "Mac Studio". So, Tim Cook says, well to make sure professionals buy these units, we will at the same time stop selling any of our 27-inch iMac models and also, add in an over priced matching monitor called the "Studio Display" and then, laugh all the way to the bank (smile...smile).
@Kanaba Nakamura Fully agree and, I have been saying for decades that, you either "play Apple, Inc.'s game ... or make them play your game". With my basic iPad 9th generation it works with a pair of my old wired headphones, works with a lighting cable Logitech keyboard (no need for blue-tooth pairing), works with my already owned Apple first generation pencil, works with my already owned lighting to USB Camera Adapter, and lighting to SD Card Reader. Plus it supports the current version of iPad OS and Apple's "center stage" function (smile...smile).
It is a great choice if you come from Gen 7 or older. You don’t have to buy a new pencil so the price increase doesn’t really count for you. You get a massive boost in performance with its SoC, double the storage, bigger screen, double ram, a new design, gorgeous colours, an outstanding front facing camera, a better rear camera and more. If all these don’t sound like a good deal, I don’t know what does.
No one said the 10th gen isn't a good product, but it doesn't exist in a vacuum. On its own it might be a better deal but as it was explained in the video, there are better options.
You make several excellent points. For myself, it really comes down to the design do you prefer the older classic look (like myself) then pick-up the basic iPad 9th generation. However, if you prefer the newer more modern design then buy the iPad Air (smile...smile).
Had to upgrade my old base model iPad from 2017. Loved that thing, But it slowly lacked more and more features I wanted. Went all out on the iPad Pro this time. Sadly I waited till the M2, hoping a mini LED screen would come to the 11 inch. So not thrilled I didn’t get many new features for the price. However I do love the iPad, and bought the Apple Magic Keyboard to go with it, as well as the Pencil. The keyboard is over priced, But really adds a lot to the iPad experience. Just sucks no function keys. And I also fell in love with the pencil. Didn’t think I’d ever use it. But I do all the time. Unless you need that tablet mobility or touchscreen / pencil, The MacBook Air is cheaper than my full setup (MSRP), and far more features.
Wait, did Apple oversaturate the Apple market with their own device causing fragmentation? This is just hilarious! I do hope that they figure it out soon though.
Man your videos are so enjoyable! I really like the aesthetic, the background music, the entire vibe. The voice over is crisp, audio levels are well monitored.Just wish you uploaded more videos. You're a great presenter and make some great points as well. Edit: off topic, im still using my iPad Pro 12.9 from 2018. Still great for notes, media consumption and everyday tasks. Really don't see any reason to upgrade, let alone buy this weird base one.
Watching this from my iPad 9th gen (which does everything I need). The 10th gen just seems like a product they build spare parts and a tiny bit innovation.
the 7th, 8th and 9th gen iPads are all you need as a tablet. Rest is either overkill or just plain bad. Rather get a Macbook Air if you're spending $1k on an iPad.
I have an Air with USB-C and I think it's probably the best iPad to suit my needs, I use it quite a bit. Only thing I wish I had done was get more than 64GB of storage... Love the video and the format! Keep up the great work :D
While, I have seen a lot of other You Tube reviews about Apple's new basic iPad 10th generation. As always, yours was truly special and a joy to watch. For the past several years, I have only been recommending users buy either an iPad Air or the basic iPad 9th generation. The day the iPad 10th generation was introduced, I went home and ordered on Apple's Veteran web site (saving 10 percent on the price) a maxed out version of the iPad 9th generation with 256GB of memory and the cell data option. Why? Because, it is an excellent replacement for my older basic iPad 6th generation, it still has a home button, a headphone jack, supports Apple's "center stage" function, works with my already owned 1st generation pencil, and operates perfectly with all of my lighting adapters. In addition, as for as Apple's new iPad 10th generation "Keyboard Folio" this week, I just received my Logitech Combo Touch which, I prefer and its keyboard has special function keys plus they are also "back lit" for working in low light (smile ... smile).
To be honest I was amazed you didn’t comment on this disaster of a product in the first couple of weeks after it was released, but holy cow was the wait worth it! So much comedy in here.
One benefit of the non-laminated display is that it's less costly to replace in case of a break since there's less a chance it's broken through to the touch sensor and actual display parts and it's just the glass on top.
I honestly think that the fact that 10th gen iPad doesn't support Apple Pencil 2nd gen is a deal breaker, that's why I got the M1 iPad Air instead of the iPad 10th gen other then oc the performance
@@BusterDarcyYou underestimate how important the apple pen gen 2 is, especially for people who buy their first ipad and don't have pen 1 and adaptors. For me, and I assume other people interested in art and note taking, is the one thing keeping me using an ipad and not a surface or another alternative. Its pretty much the best pen on any digital drawing device.
My friend actually bought one of these things to upgrade from a 7 year old pro as that one stopped charging. She already owned a first gen pencil so she decided to get the 10th gen because then she wouldn't need to get a new pencil and could save some money ontop of the already lower price then a brand new air would be. Her biggest mistake was going into a physical apple store imo, that way she got talked into a 10th gen instead of a referb air 4th gen + a second gen pencil for only £20 more then what she paid for a new 10th gen.
i think the first gen pencil can actually work with the newer 2nd pencil compatible ipads but you need a third party app to pair it. once paired it behaves just like on a first gen pencil compatible one.
I have a 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 . . . that thing is an INSANE powerhouse and I can't possibly see myself needing to jump into the newer model of that (or any iPad) any time soon. As a photographer and retro gamer, this iPad Pro does MORE than I need from it in any capacity.
8:20 Hey! 2017 iPad Pro fan! I've had mine for half a decade and it does EVERYTHING super effectively. The battery still lasts a good 4-5 hours too, and I've been daily driving it for well over a thousand hours at this point. I keep seeing newer and newer iPads come out, but like, mine already can do everything I need, so...
This video could not have come at a better time. My fiancé and I need to replace both our iPads. Mine is a 2017 Pro with a bad battery, and so I’ve been back and forth on the cost/benefit of upgrading or just replacing the battery. I’ll be taking a look at the refurbished store.
I went to BestBuy with no intention of buying an iPad. Left with a ten generation. Took it back a couple days later to get the air with a gen 2 apple pencil. One of my favorite tech purchases this year.
I had an iPad 6th Gen that I was ready to part ways with, and waited for the 10th. Saw the press release and I was hyped! Then I saw the price… / Then after more research, I saw all the downfalls… In the end I had to choose between the 9th gen, Air 4, and ended up going with an iPad mini that was on sale. 😂
Happy haircut! I got a refurbished iPad mini 4 from best buy, and it’s great for what I want to use it for. I mostly want a decent screen for TH-cam videos and a paperback size form factor for reading kindle books. Why not get a cheap kindle fire? I have one, and it’s terrible. It’s so slow that even this 7 year old iPad feels zippy by comparison, and it’s battery life is laughable. Love my refurbished iPad!
Keep it up! This is EXACTLY what we need to hear about. The 4 models is driving me bonkers. With an unclear price model when you throw in the refurbrished store.
It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me either, mostly because the base iPad is often used by students who work with the Apple Pencil everyday. I think in this situation the dongle and the cable to charge and connect the Pencil is really annoying.
The usb c Pencil pretty much fixes the Pencil problem. You still need a cable but you don’t need dongles and you can use the cable that came with the iPad. It even magnetically attaches to the side of the iPad! However, there is no pressure sensitivity.
Something that I think a lot of people are missing is that for several years Apple has given *a lot* less attention to the iPad line than in iPhones due to them having way bigger market share since Android and Windows tablets can’t compete anymore. Less competition = less innovation. One place they’ve always skimped on is the CPU. My 8th gen iPad, released in 2020, uses the same CPU as the iPhone XS, released in *2018*. Apple jumping straight to M series chips for iPad Pro has basically turned it into a MacBook running iOS (iPad Pro and MB Air are nearly the same price nowadays).
It's a good review, well put together visually and mostly good audio, I think you guys put together a nice informative video here. It's just a shame it's 2 months late as most of the people who would buy the lowest tier ipad and would benefit from the information here already bought one for the holiday season. But it's still a good thing at any time to point out that the cheapest version of something often isn't worth it's price, and most of the features people really want to use are on the mid tier options instead (ie. the air in this case)
The only reason i think they have the dongle for the apple pencil is just to manipulate people into thinking how much of a hassle it would be to switch on to usb-c. Thats they only the first gen pencil is supported and why the base ipad now got usb-c.
I recently started working on Best Buy and our Apple experts went into great lengths being very helpful explaining each of the differences with each but went even FURTHER into great lengths about the frustrations on how dumb it is that they gave the iPad 10 type C while just making everything more confusing and expensive rather than just lightning and save everyone the hassle
I'm so glad I got the 9th generation instead of a 10th! I thought I might've chosen wrong, but seeing this as an artist, I'm glad I went with the 9th one... this was my first ever apple product and i spent days making cons and pros over the two, yet no website mentioned the changes shown in this video 😓
Then there’s also the iPad Mini for $50 more brand new. Which has a laminated display, pencil 2 support, modern chassis, USB C, A15 chip, etc. Smaller screen, but it’s a fantastic screen. Honestly the mini is a fantastic deal. Only thing that would make it better is magic keyboard support.
They haven't been going downhill, they've been stagnating... until iPadOS 16 came out in June 2022, which made it *better*. When the iPad Pro gets the horizontally placed camera and fn keys, I think we'll see a lot of TH-camrs revert back to the idea of the iPad being a computer replacement again.
@@utubekullanicisi ipados 16 is a step in the right direction, they still need to improve stage manager. I am actually using an external monitor right now!
My wife is still running the 5th Gen iPad Air and it's still running strong. Plenty of power to run the latest Apps, doesn't have any battery issues (Yet) and has the headphone jack too. We did have an issue with charging once, we thought it was the port because we swapped out a few cables with no result. But after more investigation, it turned out to be the power plug itself and not the iPad at all. There's many years left in my wifes iPad yet 😁
Yk what’s funny… consumers don’t really care. My best friend just got the whole suite of accessories you mentioned (keyboard case, pencil 1, adapter) and she loves her new thing. Got it in blue. I even asked her about the weird charging and she said it’s better than the boner pencil of prior iPads. So MAC address you’re correct, this is awful. But unfortunately Apple just really nailed the color options to the point where average users don’t care
I have a year old 9th gen iPad. It's still a fantastic device and does everything I need it to do. However, I would like to have a bigger screen and USB C is a really nice thing to have so I’m considering a refurb. They’re some good options out there.
Bro I am student attending lots of zoom meetings, studying with textbooks on my ipad and taking notes which don't require pressure sensitivity obviously. Screen is wider, stereo is better watching videos on youtube and will age slower. Just buy a third-party pencil bro less expensive and no impairement issues like magnetic ones
I have been using an ipad pro 2nd gen forever. battery is still pretty good though. I use it every night and morning to watch stuff in bed. which is funny because i got it for a completely different purpose, which i have no use for since I moved from an apartment to a bedroom in a house. i'm glad i'm still getting a ton of use out of it though! I don't see how any of the new specs will change my life when this ipad does everything i need it to. I'll probably upgrade when it dies though .
I am still using my 2020 iPad Pro in 2023 and it still runs like a beast. Super helpful for school and music. And even tho the battery is starting to die, I would totally recommend it in the refurbished store.
Honestly we need to start treating apple like every other tech company… this is a MID-RANGE model that is absolutely worth the money, try comparing any other CPU in a tablet to this for the same price, doesn’t matter if the 10th gen doesn’t support the second pencil like who cares lol it’s still worth every cent you spent on it
At this point I just bought a surface go for $400. It has a built-in kickstand, the keyboard cost me $45 on sale, the pen magnetically connects, cost me $70 on sale, and it has a battery life of 1 YEAR.
I'm still clinging to my 6th gen iPad entry level. The battery's charge doesn't last quite as long as it used to. It was looking to upgrade when the 10th gen came out but I was unimpressed with the new value proposition. I expect I'll end up with a refurbished Air but haven't quite talked myself into pulling the trigger.
The elephant in the room is what this has done to the education sector, at least here in Australia. Working for a government school, the most we could ever really do was purchase the base model (regular iPad), we always bought the 32GB model (except with 9th gen where we got the 64GB since 32 wasn't available anymore) since it was cheap (Every generation right up to and including the 9th gen before the 10th gen came out would cost us 400AUD/iPad). Upon release of the 10th gen, the 64GB model jumped up from the 400AUD pricetag to a new 749AUD pricetag (We can get it slightly cheaper at around 700AUD), so that's about 300AUD more expensive than the previous generations. The 9th gen also had a price increase of around 100AUD. We can now no longer afford to upgrade our iPads, I have around 30 Air 2's that need to be replaced, not going to happen (We have almost 300 iPads), we tend to keep running them for as long as possible (6yrs or more), basically until Apple release an iPadOS version that no longer works on a particular model, mostly because then the apps stop getting updated for it too. Apple really need to do something about this pricing of the 10th gen if they want schools to be able to buy them again. Insurance is probably our best bet, since when an iPad gets broken, insurance will replace it, though because the 9th gen is still getting sold, that's what older models will be replaced with.
As a windows user, I have to agree with Jonathan's comment at the end lol. Windows feels like, the best way to sum it up is "It works great! Until it doesn't". To this day, since the release of win11, the HDR on my machine is janky af. Even on a 2022 device sometimes it takes a solid 10 seconds to open large media folders. Even my phone doesn't struggle with that. And many things like this.
That folio would be over priced at 169. Honestly, it makes more sense to use logitech only with this model. A logi crayon and a keyboard for less that that folio. Best part the new crayon is USB-C so no running around for an adapter. And my logic is if you’re that concerned about pencil performance move up the product stack.
I had an air 2 for years it honestly fulfilled all my needs from an iPad but when apple dropped support I bought a 12.9 M1 Pro with 5G because my philosophy was that if I buy the best one they make it will last me maybe 8 or 9 years before I need to upgrade again since 99% of the time it’s just used for TH-cam/Netflix and writing blog posts or my book. I bought the Logitech keyboard to go with it for writing too so I have no need to upgrade again for a long time
I charge my Apple Pencil gen 1 with the iPad charger and cable that came in box; as my gen 1 Apple Pencil came w/ a dongle to adapt to the lightning charging cable. Imo, so much easier and quicker to plug Pencil into wall charger to fully charge my Apple Pencil in “about” 25 mins or so; and doesn’t look “weird” sticking out of charge port of my iPad either. Want to know of charged when in wall charger dongle, not an issue as iPad keeps track of Pencil battery even when your 25 ft away in garage and Pencil is charging in my room on nightstand plugged into my wall. Have never charged gen 1 Pencil any other way; why else did the Apple Pencil Gen 1 come w/ the lightning cable charging adapter dongle in the Apple Pencil box, b/c they figured you’d charge it in the wall charger from the iPad charger and cable that iPad came with, and like said, also takes half the time to charge or even less w/ wall charger then using iPad charge port (least from my experience over the years). Sadly, have just now noticed that my gen 1 pencil has started to have battery issues. Pencil released in 11/2015 and I got Xmas of 2016 w/ my first ever iPad, awesome. But not after it’s fully charged I’m getting 60% as my “full charge “, instead of the 100% it’s supposed to be. That said it’s a 8 year old device and IS ACTUALLY GREAT for the age. If only I still had AppleCare on it, would be easy and cheap” fix. But apple didn’t offer monthly AppleCare subscriptions back than, fyi, a new service THATS WLRTH IT AND SO SO AWESOME!. Highly recommend over the norm standard 2 year AppleCare. Cheers✌🏻
To be honest. Don't use the Pencil and just use an Ipad as content consumption device. Lack of Pencil or Keyboard connector functionality is not a big deal for me. However the price increase is not something I am very attracted too. I think I will adjust my habits and switch to different screens I already have in the house. I am looking to simplify and reduce the number of devices that need software updates and network connectivity
I love my iPad Air. I use the Pencil for basically everything. Though I think unoptimised apps kill the battery with the wireless usage. I bought my mum a F-F lightning adapter because her pencil charging on her older iPad freaked me out. I’ve already needed to replace my pencil from dropping it too many times. I didn’t want to replace her’s by just existing near it.
My dad got the 10th gen ipad for $50 off on Best Buy, so a $70 difference from the refurb ipad air is a bit more worth it. Plus, he can get that monthly payment financing at Best Buy unlike Apple when it comes to their refurb stuff. My parents also video chat a lot and refuse to use headphones so the camera placement and landscape speakers is great.
For me the camera on the side is a way better design, but the prices are scary high. In Ireland the prices for apple devices are becoming totally unreachable at this point in my view. The products are really good, but I can’t bring myself to spend that much money. I am open to paying a premium for a good device, but it does still need to be reasonable. My old iPad Pro battery is starting to die, so I’m going to need an upgrade for work soon. I’m still not pulling the trigger though. The other thing is that when I buy tech I want to be excited by it, and iPads simply aren’t a cool new toy at this point. It’s a purely economic decision and I’m not excited to get a new device.
after looking at Ipads for the last year, i found myself wanting a little more. I'm an artist and need a good pen tablet but i'm also a 3d modeler and coder, i want to run full desktop apps, so i bought a Samsung Galaxy Book 360 for the same price as a macbook air. It has an 12th gen i7, it has an up-gradable ssd, an Oled display, it has better I/O, it runs windows so i can run any program i want, and samsung licenses Wacom's pen technology which means i can use a wacom one stylus and it draws just as well if not better then the Ipad pro. I would have bought an M2 Ipad pro if it could run software meant for Mac OS but it can't. Since i went with the galaxy book, in a few months when i upgrade from my Iphone 13 pro i will be switching to a samsung...
I was wondering what to watch and tada, love the presentation style, it engages with the viewer in a way that engages thru most ADHD periods. Or as in the early TV days, channel hopping and finding something that you not only watch but all the way thru in one go.
The icing on the cake for me was realizing that my mom’s iPad Pro from 2017. Had a laminated display and better speakers then the 2022 iPad 10th generation.
I went for the 11" iPad Pro with 2nd Gen Pencil of School because of the features of that iPad. I use the pencil every single day. I personally could not go to an iPad like that 10th gen iPad
I bought a refurbished iPad Pro 2021 for 700€ and I think it was an amazing choice. I was going to go for the 2018 version but I was a little scared how long it will still be supported. Also it was not more than 50€ more.
Love my 9th gen iPad. It's perfect for me to use while teaching my classes and does everything I need it to phenomenally. I just couldn't justify even paying for a refurbished as none even touched the 9th gen in price for the performance I need.
The only channel that reviews apple products objectively without the mad fanboy I see in almost every other tech channel. I don’t think any of those guys ever tackled the truckload of issues in the 2019 MacBook 16 for example.
I appreciate the video! But I would also love a mention a price hike outside of America continent. In EU it was 380 to 550 EUR. Way too much for such a device.
All accurate. I got it for my 6-year-old son to play Minecraft and use with the CalDigit Soho dock so he can use a keyboard, mouse and monitor. It only supports display mirroring at the original resolution, but it works great. We also got the ESR Rebound Magnetic Keyboard Case to go with it and it behaves exactly like the Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro, only it requires its own charger. iPad 10th gen is a great iPad for kids. Would not recommend for adults.
As a day 1 iPad user I knew then trying to us it like a laptop was lazy thinking. Now nearly 13 years later it is more essential to my work flow efficiencies than any other device. I wish Apple would let me use it as my phone.
It's not that I don’t use my Apple Pencil, I just barely use it but I still use it. Still handy to take a screenshot and doodle (or sign documents) on it every now and again. Just like how I used my old Samsung Galaxy Note 4 before I got my iPad. I've tried to draw with it, but I found that the gestures (double tap to..., two finger taps to..., etc) are not as natural than the pencil on a screen thing. Was looking forward to buy a newly released non-pro/air iPad. But then they made these half-assed changes that somehow madef me think to get a gen-9 iPad with big storage instead.
Honestly, when it comes to Apple products it's OFTEN the better idea to buy the upper models from a few years ago than the newest lower tier model
I couldn’t agree more.

@@Shrek_Has_Covid19 I don't think that would happen if you buy from the Apple refurbished store like shown in the video.
this applies to tons of things. the build quality, time, effort and technology in the highest end products of any line were made to be the highest end of that line. There was a point in time when it was a top model, there was never a point in time where, for example, this ipad is the top model
If ur on a budget i have found it is always better to buy the premium model from a year ago than the budget model that just came out

Framing the 1st gen pencil as "from the Obama era" got a good laugh out of me. Really puts into perspective what's going on with this Apple pencil debacle.
Still works fine
So I bought my parents a 9th gen iPad about a week before they announced the 10th gen. My first reaction was "I knew they would release a new one as soon as I bought this", but then I saw basically everything in this video and was glad I'd just gotten the 9th gen on sale as there was nothing about the 10th gen that would offer my parents a better experience for the price
Yes, for us over age 50, the basic iPad 9th generation is the best way to go. Also, it is even better if, like you did you are able to save some money (smile...smile).
yea i got the ipad 9 for my textbooks and watching movies and nothing more. And i got it on sale at $289 so i’m very satisfied with what i have
Well at least lucky for you the new one sucked lol
I got my girlfriend an ipad pro then 2 months later the m1 ipad pros came out. got my mother an ipad air and 2 months later the m1 airs came out.
Does anyone want m1 airpods?
it comes down to what suits ur needs
This only highlights how good the 9th gen is. Hopefully it isn't the last base iPad with sane pricing.
@@gogobrasil7185 it already is the last, wdym?

But you also lose the headphone jack... and for the same price as the Air with 64GB, you could get a 9th Gen with 256GB. lol
@@Nurse_Xochitl true and not everyone wants whats on the air and pay extra
The camera quality is always low on these iPads. At least the iPad Pro has a camera quality like iPhone 7. Webcam on MacBook Air is like all other laptops--compressed and poor color rendition. Basically camera tech from 2001.
@@techmaester tablets in general get low end/older cameras that aren't as nice
Best review I’ve seen yet. Gets straight to the heart of just how odd this iPad release was
I mean, you aren’t wrong.
The only time it would be viable, is if Apple made that pencil and offered a free upgrade, with user only needing to pay for shipping.
or just get a Samsung tablet? literally s pen charges with a landscape camera design lol
Honestly, just get the Logitech Crayon 2nd gen, it's basically a 1st gen Apple Pencil but with USB-C.
Actually having a non laminated display is a plus because it will be cheaper to repair
If it had been an Air 4 with a non-laminated display, nobody would have complained. The 9th gen is after all an Air 3 with non-laminated display.

Just received my Logitech Combo Case this week and, I love it. It makes my basic iPad 9th generation work like a laptop (smile...smile).
Same! I have the same iPad and it is working great!
Same. It's more powerful than any Android tablet in its price range.
The base model iPads always been the workhorse for the education system. That is what the 10th gen seems to be geared towards.
Except that they keep selling the 9th gen for like $100 less, there is literally no target market for this thing.
It would be cool, if you could discuss the camera bump on tablets as well? Especially with the cheaper models that will be used without a case, it is really annoying when trying to write with the Apple Pencil because you can not lay it flat on the table.
Camera bump not a problem for me but the quality of photo and video clips from the camera on iPad is lacking compared to iPhone.
Honestly 64gb is more than enough if you aren't using the ipad as a hard drive for photos and videos.

The big question is, what will Apple, Inc. do once they run out of their older 9th generation units to sell (smile ... smile).
Now that I think about it, maybe that's why they kept the 9th gen around, they're smarter than they seem
@@mihaidragnea9785 as I explained in my comment the better options cost more specifically because you have to buy a new Pencil.

My friend actually bought one of these things to upgrade from a 7 year old pro as that one stopped charging. She already owned a first gen pencil so she decided to get the 10th gen because then she wouldn't need to get a new pencil and could save some money ontop of the already lower price then a brand new air would be.
I love Mac Address, as a former apple employee this makes me laugh like we used to in the back room away from the customers and management :p

The fact they removed the headphone jack from ipads... is crazy to me. Tons of people use ipads for the plethora of mobile music apps.
U could use a lightning earphone adapter
The usb c Pencil pretty much fixes the Pencil problem. You still need a cable but you don’t need dongles and you can use the cable that came with the iPad. It even magnetically attaches to the side of the iPad! However, there is no pressure sensitivity.
Jonathan feelings for Apple are directly proportional to how long is his hair 💀
Camera placement has never been an issue. Most of the “video” meetings we are audio only.
I really like mac address videos, they are really refreshing compared to other LMG channels! Keep on the great work :)
2:43 5 seconds of charging really gives you 15 minutes of use?

Then there’s also the iPad Mini for $50 more brand new. Which has a laminated display, pencil 2 support, modern chassis, USB C, A15 chip, etc.
Smaller screen, but it’s a fantastic screen. Honestly the mini is a fantastic deal. Only thing that would make it better is magic keyboard support.

They haven't been going downhill, they've been stagnating... until iPadOS 16 came out in June 2022, which made it *better*.

If that's Horst's house, I absolutely love his aesthetic. If it's not, I love whoever's aesthetic that is. So nice and warm.
Glad to see this channel keep picking up more subscribers. It's great that Mac Address isn't just LMG but Mac. As always, I like the vibe of these.
For as fragmented as Android is, at least all OEMs for all Google OSs use the same USB-C connector for charging.
I still use and feel no need to upgrade my 2018 iPad Pro? First iPad to do second gen pencil, idk what year it is
I have a year old 9th gen iPad. It's still a fantastic device and does everything I need it to do. However, I would like to have a bigger screen and USB C is a really nice thing to have so I’m considering a refurb. They’re some good options out there.
Those refurbed pro models are such a tempting offer. I'm in the same boat.
Yes, please go for the iPad Air.
I’d wish these video’s weren’t 6+ months late, I mean you probably got a point, but i can’t be arsed finding out about it.
Small correction, Magic Keyboard came in 2020, it was Smart Folio in 2018
The elephant in the room is what this has done to the education sector, at least here in Australia.
I wish Apple would focus more on Software more than hardware. It would make the experience so much better
Cheers✌🏻
500K subs! This channel is really figuring out what it wants to be and its an amazing addition to LTT, Well done!
8:39 it’s kinda ridiculous how iPads don’t have Battery Health calculations just like on iPhone.
They could’ve make the 2nd gen pencil connector on the left side since the speaker doesn’t take up the whole length.
You’re telling me Apple nerfed a USB-C iPad? Colour me shocked /s
