      Fantastic job, well done 👍 I really enjoyed this vid, Cthulhu has featured in meny films bt I can only think of two of them that refer to him & the rest of the pantheon as "the old ones" & they are "Howard the Duck" (meny of you are probably to young to have heard of that film, it's an 80's thing 😂) & the other is a little more resent & that's "HellBoy" both of which are good films bt "Howard the Duck" is abit wierd 😂😅😂😅

    I got to admit with shame that the first real encounter I had with Cthulhu was in that South Park episode. I just had to look up after it what the hell that flying squid monster is and a whole new universe emptied itself right over my head. Now I love Lovecrafts work-

      My own first awareness of Lovecraft's work came due to a role-playing game my friends wanted to try. Once I read "The Mountains of Madness" however, I was off to the races, so to speak. However one finds a compelling fictional universe, the thing to do? Just enjoy it :)

Even though I passively encounter Cthulhu Mythos inspired movies and media when I was younger, I only truly came to understand after playing a dating Sim game in my teens and one of the answers for the girl was that HP Lovecraft was her favorite author. So eventually I looked him up and then I discovered the Cthulhu Mythos.

    The Video game Bloodborne(2015) Is heavily inspired by the Cthulhu Mythos. Complete with great old one and dream realms and a zone that is ripped straight from the shadow over innsmouth. One of the final bosses The moon presence takes a form similar to that of cthulhu or nyarlathotep. The games shift from Gothic to cosmic horror is nothing short of a masterstroke. There are dozens of video essays on TH-cam about bloodborne and it influences. I highly recommend as a game and as a prime example of lovecraftain horror.

      The only problem that people even bring up is that the good Hoontah is able to dunk the cosmic horror monsters. Personally I love Bloodborne, I love the entire Soulsborne series, while Dark Souls 1 had tje best story Bloodborne had, by far the best gameplay of the whole series and i doubt anyone will be able to outdo it.

    • @sonofamitch985
      @sonofamitch985 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I get that the whole appeal of cosmic horror is its so unimaginably beyond us and understand that. But i think bloodborne justifys it to a certain degree. For one a good portion of the game we are on the trail of a group of people trying to ascend to become a old one, some succeed we find(rom) and we attempt the same. The only truly powerful old one we fight is the moon presence. We are told the amygdalas are "lesser" and simply servants of the nightmares(not inculcating patches worship). And the orphan of cos is simply a child of a Deep one(or a human ascended witch ever theory you like). So the only real old god we fight moon daddy but at that point we are close to ascending ourselves.

    It’s weird a lot of people seem to think of Cthulhu as this all-powerful, incomprehensible form. He’s described to have a form, there’s statues of him that describe him as the classic winged tentacle-mouthed monster we all know and love, and he’s far from the most powerful of the Lovecraftian gods.

      Going by the Call of Cthulhu, the statues are meant to be poor representations of him. The human eye approximates him as having a tentacled face and dragon wings and whatnot, but that’s just due to our limited capacities. The testimony of the sailor makes it pretty clear he’s meant to be incomprehensible.

    In Season 2 of Justice League: The Animated Series(2003), in a two part episode called: “The Terror Beyond”, Cthulhu is feature as an extradimesional god-like entity called Icthultu. He is the leader of a species of monster called “The Old Ones”. Icthultu even looks very similar to the Lovecraftian depictions of Cthulhu. In the show, he is voiced by Rob Zombie

    Couple weeks ago, I went searching through google and youtube and wikipedia trying to learn about lovecraft great old ones and couldn't get much because I didn't know the right terms to use. I learned very little. Lo, I have now been enlightened to the emptiness and learned thanks to the chaos of youtube recommendations. Be this a sign of anything other than the true chaos that is the concept of the Great Old Ones that I cannot choose to learn, but it will teach itself to me. Did I even choose to click this video?

    Cannot say whether or not he is directly represented in the fromsoftware title bloodborne but the Lovecraftian influences are very apparent after a few hours into the game. It's actually a great example of traditional horror like bram's stoker type horror and the psychological/cosmic horror of the Lovecraftian mythos blended together perfectly in my opinion and is very worth a look if you haven't already.

    i have recently developed a fascination with H.P Lovecraft. , having recently bought his Necronomicon( a.k.a, the best, weird tales of H.P.Lovecraft) when i came accross it among some books i was putting on display in a charrity store where i work. . one can draw paralels between his work & that of J.R.R Tolkien, in that both these authors invented their own, fascinateing fantassy worlds, inhabited by extraordinary creatures & people, which make their stories utterly fascinateing & absorbing. Lovecraft's where aimed at adult readers, while Tolkiens where written with the younger generation in mind, but these mythical realms make their stories totaly absorbing & irrisistable!

I was seeing everything that it was seeing from small tiny bulb shaped jellyfish to the blackness of the deep depths of the sea. the connection was strong but I managed to break it. I never wanted to experience something like that ever again but now that I understand him more I get his purpose the old ones are returning soon.

    I suggest the Widdershins books, aka the Whybourne and Griffin series. They are a long series of mystery novels, sometime vaguely in the late 1800's to early 1900's, all involving Lovecraftian horrors, magic, and the supernatural. They feature Whybourne, a painfully introverted doctor of language and hieroglyphs, alumni of Miskatonic University, and closeted gay man, working on various translations of ancient texts in the museum of his hometown, the fictional New England port of Widdershins. He meets Griffin Flaherty, a private detective who is investigating a case of the supernatural, and trying to come to terms with his past traumatic experiences of eldritch horror (and another closeted gay man), who needs Whybourne's help translating texts relevant to his case. They then go on to have a long continued series of books where they defeat cultists, discover monsters, do rituals, travel the world, and have gay sex. Is it romance? Is it horror? Is it a damn good time? Yes to all.

    I feel that one aspect of the Cthulhu mythos that should have been mentioned is the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game. Lovecraft created the mythos, and Derleth and others expanded it, but Sandy Petersen, in creating his rpg, did more than anyone to catalogue the mythos and collect as much information as possible in one internally consistent place.

    Just to comment on the star born race that revere Cthulhu, Id like to interpret their accession as the priest came about them and either indirectly or directly influenced their evolution into something similar to himself. That his powers changed them over time and molded them into something of his image. Sorta like the Reapers from Mass effect re-purpose anything that comes into contact with them to suit their needs.

    I personally think they should do the actual cthulu story In a movie. Not showing cthulu himself, but instead have it be a psychological/cosmic horror and thriller. Give people the creeps. I know when I first read cthulu I actually had a couple nightmares of it. If directed and acted properly it could actually work.
