I'm crying. A 60 year old man, crying. We will never have a group like this, ever again, and it breaks my heart.
Well, you have 19+ albums to enjoy and numerous bands they have inspired, many of which are also good. For example, Dream Theater.
Neil’s passing brought a premature ending to the group for sure. As you’ve probably seen, Geddy and Alex are thinking about playing together again. I just can’t picture them without Neil even though he wasn’t the original drummer when the group first formed. 😢
Don't be sad it's over, be glad it happened! We are all blessed, man.

His voice is very unique and people either love it or hate it. Personally I love it 😊
Many disliked Rush back then because they didn't enjoy his voice. It's piercing, and his vibrato is faster than many can handle comfortably. As the band evolved, he sang a bit lower.
I started out (as a teenager) hating it. But when I finally got it… wow. Just wow. What a gift to the world to have Geddy in our lives…
I have never been able to stomach it, and that has always put me off listening to Rush properly as his voice grates.
His voice was a big part of their unique sound when u hear Rush there is no doubt who ur listening to. Even before the singing begins very unique there will never be another Rush.
Geddy does a good job, but Rush was not known for their vocals. Early critics shredded him. Rush is all about the master instrumentals seamless transitions, and deep lyrics. They deserve their spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but not for the vocals. Rush is a unique, special band. Love them!

The crispness and clarity is 100% natural, it's not a mixing trick. I went to their Cleveland concert quite a few years ago and this is their sound. The shear amount of sound and variety coming out of these three gentlemen is incredible.

They're one of the few bands that sound just as good live as they do on the album.
Take into account that if it's the mixing process, probably the video has a remastered version of the original track. but in the end. Geddy Lee is a masterpiece himself
Easily the greatest 3 piece band to ever grace our musical lives. Absolutely they're unique from formation to stardom especially since they started in the '70s and only recently well a few years back, stopped touring. Unfortunately the drummer Neil Peart passed away. He was a huge part of the lyrical aspect of their music. RIP Neil❣ Arguably the best drummer ever.

Everything about this trio is so amazing. The music is so clever and smart. The lyrics I think have a very high IQ they I think we're the best ever thanks to the genius of Neil Peart . If you haven't yet listen to the album 2112 do so it is an amazing piece of work. But then everything they put out is. Progressive rock at it's finest.

Geddy has one of the most unique voices in rock. I grew up with Rush...saw them on their moving pictures tour when they were taking the world by storm. There is nothing like them at all!
I saw them when they were lead off group for RUSH, and THEY were on their first headliner tour. Yeah, I'm that flippin' old.

You have found the biggest three player band ever! If you want your mind completely blown ... try the live performance of Xanadu from the Exit Stage Left tour - three people playing like a dozen. When they started, Led Zeppelin was the big thing, so Geddy took his vocals high. Over the years his range lowered, but the one thing you never need is a lyric sheet. His enunciation is perfect, and his expression is unparalleled. Neil Peart, the greatest of all drummers, also wrote the lyrics, and if you are wise enough to proceed down this rabbit-hole, you will hear songs so beautifully crafted that you will be moved on a level like Nightwish. They're different versions of genius and masterpieces, but they're at that level. Might I suggest live performances whenever possible, because like Nightwish, they're more emotional when playing live. The quality doesn't suffer, it's actually enhanced. Much love, Bethany!! You are so much fun, and your "going back" is something for which you shouldn't apologize. It's one of the things that makes you so very special ... you do it for the passion.
Yes, Chad, it's probably hard to overstate the effect Robert Plant had on rock vocalists (themselves or record execs looking for them). I suppose maybe Frankie Valli fits into this conversation too, because Jon Anderson was also in this mold, and he's roughly contemporary with Plant, not a follower like Lee here or Geoff Tate or Ric Emmett (which is not a knock against them). I honestly don't know. Anyway, it's nice to know others are thinking like thoughts. Peace!

Yours was the first post I saw that touched in the lyrics in their songs! I’m surprised because that was the first thing that got me jamming! Of course shout out to you folks that mentioned the annunciation. The Vocal Coach almost caught it as she discussed the “thing” that was so intangible to describe. The high pitched nasally voice as I’ve called it for decades. But you would certainly never need a lyric sheet as this makes his diction so much clearer. His voice is truly unique!

ABSOLUTELY. "Xanadu" from the _Exit... Stage Left_ tour is a MUST-SEE. Until you watch it, you'll never believe that three guys can pull off such an opus live. IMHO, every song from this live album is better than the studio versions, except for maybe "Tom Sawyer;" Everyone's playing is so much more fluid and adventurous, and especially with "Xanadu," the songs have a very spacious, atmospheric quality that adds so much to the songcraft.

I saw Rush live multiple times back in the 70's and 80's. Geddy's unique voice is not a product of studio mixing. It's just as great live! He just has a quality that is real and his own.
While I agree with you about Geddy being amazing live I must say that live vocals are mixed as well. I just think that a good sound engineer can find how to bring out the best in a persons tone. You could easily add a warmth to his tone by bringing up the low end and adjusting the roll off, but that wouldn't be the Rush we all know and love.

@@BradCooney Geddy had to tone down his voice in the early 80's. No doubt, to preserve it. The 70's Rush material had an amazing power and range.
As a man ages he can't keep up a higher singing like that. Elton once commented on his early singing days he said "I was nearly a Castrati."
No AutoTune necessary or any other trickery.
I feel when Neil wrote the lyrics "You can be the Captain, and I will draw the chart", he was self reflecting.

The group Rush is a progressive rock band that has stayed together and performed for over 40 years ! With the passing of their legendary drummer Neil Peart a few years ago they stopped playing ! They are best friends and the group was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 ! Not a mainstream group but an innovative technically brilliant band of musicians ! They have a huge global following and always had sold out concerts everywhere ! They are Canadian from Toronto and their DNA is entrenched in our music scene ! Great post! Did you know that behind the Beatles and Rolling Stones, RUSH is 3rd in most consecutive gold/platinum albums? I'm a huge RUSH fan and although I love many rock groups, they are still my favorite.

This is Geddy's real voice. No mixing tricks. Rush is a perfectonist band that is caring about the place each instruments (including vocals should take. He is a bass players fisrt playing with an amazing drummer. It results that the low register is quite crowded. Geddy use a high register head voice to cut through this mix and I think it works perfectly because it makes his voice shine but also Neil's lyrics since they are easily understandable (I should say hearable since not always easy to understand...). Good video. Can't wait to the next one. Not enough voice analysis of Rush since they were mostly famous for their music skills.

it really doesnt get much better than this for me. i dont understand how 'musicians' or those who call themselves this, "dont like RUSH because i hate HIS voice". a more talented group of THREE GUYS, you'll never find. ive listened to RUSH since "All the World's a Stage" in 1976. for being a secular band, they touch my soul and i am moved by their talent and message.
Give Triumph a listen . Magic Power , Fight the Good Fight Rick Emit's vocals are incredible. They're another 3 piece gem from Canada. ✌️
Well put. Had Triumph stayed together longer, they certainly would have produced more gems like “Fight the Good Fight” . Rick Emit’s voice had more range than Getty’s, and equally unique. Their music was more contemporary rockish.
They climbed to relevance faster than Rush. It took Rush a while to figure out how to put their musical ideas into smaller packages. Closer To The Heart was one of their first that got regular air play

I saw them live many times, beginning in 1976 and this is exactly how he sang. Geddy had an incredible voice. Nobody else sounded like him. He sounded great live. We couldn't figure out how the hell he did it.

Next on your list for Rush should be 'Spirit of Radio', a great uplifting song about the joy of listening to music and the memories it can invoke. Also shows of a greater range of Geddys' vocals.

I disagree about Spirit of Radio showcasing Geddy's range. He doesn't hold any high notes in that song, with a couple of exceptions he just camps out around a few notes at the low end of the high range.
My go to for showcasing Geddy's voice is the song A Farewell to Kings, it has a lot of expression and variety - "chiarascuro" as this vocal coach says
@@katskillz I can agree with that through most of the song. There's one passage though I think Elizabeth will find *very* interesting. You know the part. It goes "And echoes with the sound of salesmen. Of salesmen. Ooooof SALESMEN!"
He starts in a speechy-quality definitely in lower register, pretty chest voice IMO, then the second in his "normal" timbre, then the third is that glissando way up there with the final SALESMEN sounding almost like a tremolo effect though it's all him.
I'm no vocal coach, but I think she'll find ot cool and maybe obsess over it a little (LOL).
Spirit of Radio is definitely not about the joy of listening to music. It starts out that way but becomes a criticism of the music industry.
@@katskillz I agree. I love the song, but it's the only one where to me his voice sounds a bit "tinny". I think it's the least likely candidate to showcase his voice.
I keep coming back to this reaction of yours. I have to say your obvious delight, confusion and fascination with Geddy's sound is absolutely endearing. At one point you are even blushing, which is just cute as a button. If only all music could impart such sincere and varied responses. I hope to see you do more reactions of this, my favorite band.
I assume someone told you that Geddy is not only singing, but playing the bass at the same time, and when you hear keyboards, he's probably playing it with his feet. Amazing talent.
I've been listening to Rush since their beginning in the 70's. Traveling down the Rush rabbit hole is an adventure in real progressive rock. Geddy Lee's vocals are genuine. He doesn't require additional mixing or adjustment. He really sings that high. My suggestion for another Rush performance is the video of 'Tom Sawyer' from their studio in Toronto. On another note, you are listening to arguably the greatest rock drummer of all time, the late Neil Peart. His performance in studio for 'Tom Sawyer' is phenomenal. He was once quoted saying that it was the hardest song to play. I love it when younger folks find the songs of my era for the first time. It does this old hippie's heart good to see new people find and enjoy the music I was raised on. Please consider my suggestion. Thank you for your wonderful reaction and analysis of this song.

@@ryanedwardson6541 I hesitate to make a 'best' declaration in any situation because of the differences in style, technique, era, and genre, hence the qualifier 'arguably'. Believe me, many an argument has been started when someone's favorite musician is ranked number 2! I find that as soon as an artist is declared the 'GOAT', another performer will walk up and knock them off that pedestal. I enjoy the music of many artists regardless of what subjective rank they may have. Stevie or Jimi, Neil or Ginger, you could make a case for each of them. So I leave such things to others. I'll just put another vinyl on my old Harman Karden turntable, fire up a fatty, and sit back to revel in the experience. On the other hand, I have no problem declaring who is the worse musician... anyone who uses auto tune.

I think Geddy is so suited to Neils lyrics , which are unique and deep for a 'Heavy Rock ' band . Bottom line is all three of them are excellent at what they are doing , Neil adds so much with his lyrics and drumming
I'm curious, if you explore Rush further, what you think of his phrasing. He's regarded as one of the top bass players in rock history. His vocal phrasing takes into account that he plays bass at the same time (As well as keyboards and foot pedals...that's crazy to think). But often his bass playing would mimic the melody in his voice and vice versa. And the space he often creates is often designed to allow the voice to work well with his bass playing. Great video!

True enough that his bass lines and vocal often tracked each other closely; one notable exception is Turn the Page, where the bass line and vocal had nothing to do with each other.
Geddy remarked at the time that to do that he essentially had to drill the bass part into his head so deeply that muscle memory would just play the notes for him because being on pitch for the vocal was always the most important thing.
I think that is how he did the singing / bass playing / Taurus pedals thing; he just practiced and practiced and practiced until his foot just went to the correct pedal.
The aforementioned elsewhere ESL version of Xanadu is a good place to start for a new arrival to Rush to watch Geddy doing all three things at once.
That song / concert / era is notable for featuring Neil's most gorgeous looking and sounding drum kit, the rosewood Tama Superstars.
Was going to comment on this myself. He seems to leave space in the mix so that the bass part can also be thick and meaty, keeping pace with the other instruments, yet it doesn't step on the clarity of the lyrics. Rush tracks can be distracting because you can hear each instrument so clearly, it encourages you to focus on each one at a time to follow what they are doing, then go back to hear the overall construction and balance. They really were at a different level.
& this is part of what makes Rush great.
Much like in The Who (where the roles of bassist & drummer are essentially reversed), Alex Lifeson is playing with the busiest rhythm section in rock, so he spends tons of time & effort acting as a sort of tone poet. & when it's time for him to solo suddenly he chops through the mix like a monster, & then back to the background again. You'll notice he switches from acoustic to electric guitars live in this song....
Xanadu live from the album Exit Stage Left is a one song I would always recommend. It Shows off the whole band. Rush, a Canadian treasure and one of the best power rock trio's ever.
Ah, the feathered hair and kimono period. RUSH is phenomenal any way you look at them. They changed my musical life from the instant I first heard them. The writing, composition, arrangement, technicality, and just plain ole musicianship all at Master level every single time. RIP Professor.
It still amazes me to this day when I come across someone who has not heard Rush. After all of these years they remain my all-time favorite band. My favorite vocalist is a young woman named Angelina Jordan. If you haven’t sampled her or checked her out, do your ears a favor. Rush is one of the literal best progressive rock ‘n’ roll bands in history. Three guys and a whole Lotta sound. Lucky enough to see them live years ago

Geddy Lee, the vocalist, bassist, and keyboard player, has a unique voice that is easily recognizable to fans of the band.
You can't describe it and you can't compare it. You can however get sucked in and mesmerized especially if you have the heart of the message of the band across a lot of their songs.

I never really noticed how well he creates that opening verse. He uses very specific control in every word.
Geddy Lee's voice is incredibly unique. Unmistakable. He is also a multi-instrumentalist of the highest order in the rock band Rush. Considered one of the best rock bassist in rock history. You'll often see him placed in the top 5 bassist of all time. He is absolutely unique in every sense of the word.

I think those of us who grew up listening to and seeing live shows of bands like Rush and all the great bands from the 60's up to the 90's that molded great rock are the luckiest people on earth, never to be repeated again.
If you are not familiar with the band YES they will interest you I am sure. Love the reaction to one of my favorite songs from Rush.
Geddy's voice changes over time, if you see the early releases you will hear pure power head voice, it changed over time partly because they didn't make that type of music anymore but also you can't do that over 40 years. On top of being one of the best bass players ever, he plays keyboards, bass & trigger pedals and sings some of the most intelligent lyrics written (by the drummer oddly enough). Rush is primarily known for their masterful musicianship, transitions and musical changes over the decades. Any of the Capitol theatre videos will show you early Rush, Tom Sawyer and Spirit of Radio, their swan song The Garden and Geddy's best performance the epic 2112.
He for sure sings very high.. I've seen them 4 or 5 times. First time in 1977. I was 14 or 15 and it made me take up guitar playing because I loved the guitar and singing and all of it.. The song 2112 is the song that you should hear if you want to hear him really belt. I know this is an older video, but great reaction. You have the prettiest smile and you're so feminine which is a relief in this day and age.. That was a compliment or meant to be by the way.. 😛

I was once, in a small venue.
There was a solo acoustic performer, who played an acoustic guitar, with only small amplification.
He sat there, and played Closer to the Heart.
He had a brilliant take on it.
I was very impressed with him.
When he finished, he said...loudly, So who here, is a Rush fan?
....No one said a word.
I looked around the room...no reaction!
So I stood up, and said..." You all are Rush fans...Now!!
This guy just played a Rush song, and you people, didn't even know it!!"

Nice reaction. I really enjoyed that. Yes, Geddy Lee's voice is very different from what you would expect for a rock singer. It really blends well with the heavy guitars; punches through it. A great Rush song to react to next would be Limelight.
I would suggest 2112 (Album version). you get to hear Geddy's (Lead singer, bassist, keyboards, pedals) full range and how in the same song, he can go from soft melodic to power belting. He can sound like 2 different people. Welcome to the Rush rabbit hole. enjoy the journey of a 40 year 2 man band with 19 records (gold). They strove to sound just as good live as they did in the studio. Truly amazing and so glad I got to see them a few times before the drummer's death in Jan of 2020 (Neil Peart-drummer, lyricist and amazing man) Alex (guitars, pedals, backing vocals) enjoy and great job .

I am just grateful that I was alive for the years of their activity. From Neils amazing lyrics, percussion, Geddys playing everything, Alex quietly becoming a generational influence, they were the epitome of a godsend. Thank you gentleman for adding to my general happiness.❤
I worked at a college radio station when I found out about Rush. I played Fly By Night every time I worked. Geddy’s voice was mesmerizing.
Another band with a similar singer was Pavlov’s Dog. They never caught on.
I want to recommend The Garden live. Their final song of their final album. Absolutely beautiful both musically, vocally and lyricly. 🤘

I would not recommend this, since this is probably Geddy singing at his absolute worst. Struggling to hit notes. From a vocal perspective, it's not great. Musically, it is superb.
You’ve stumbled upon one of the best bands of the 70s and early 80s. The drummer is fantastic, lead vocals is powerful and creamy, great guitar solos, Absolute power band!
Rush reminds me of a singer getting closer to their guitarist's melody the deeper they go into a song.
Geddy's voice is almost impossible to describe. He is truly unique.

I seen Rush live in the 70s,80s,&91..Geddy sounds the same live as he does on the studio recordings.. Not to mention Neil and Alex were also extraordinary every time!!😲😉

I think Geddy's style in this song is much like troubadour. He is telling a story in a rather poetic way.
Geddy did have a pretty wide range. I always thought his voice was very warm and welcoming. He managed to really hold onto it well up into his later years. The final few years of them touring was more difficult. He could hit the high notes, but not comfortably and as naturally as when he was in his 20s and 30s. There was definite strain. But fans really wanted to hear those classics, so he admirably did his best with them (which was still pretty darn good).
Focused, clear and unique. He was formidable in his prime.

Rush is a very unique band. Their talent and creativity are legend and their sound is unmistakable. I was fortunate enough to see them 6 times over 30 years. I am a metal head first, but the sound these 3 virtuosos made always captivated me. Neil Peart, the drummer is world renowned and widely considered the G.O.A.T. of drummers. The old saying is, "if Neil Peart isn't your favorite drummer, he is your favorite drummers favorite drummer" RIP Professor. Rush is considered progressive rock and their influence in the era is truly monumental.

I remember hearing this in 77. It was a wonderful time to be alive, as teenagers we would listen endlessly and we always appreciated the experience.
Geddy has a unique, extremely powerful voice, so strong that he can force his consonants for clarity and keep a great tone and power.

I am a huge Rush fan. Al top notch Bass, Drums and Lead players. That right incredible complex songs.
My first RUSH concert was at the St. Louis Arena in 1978 on their Farewell to Kings Tour. The flowing white robes, white carpet on their stage and Neil"s large mustache. We left that show saying WOW!
Yep...Geddy's voice lives in the upper register.
I've always thought that his unique voice was well-complemented by the unmistakable sound of his Rickenbacker bass down on the bottom end of their songs.
I heard that Geddy developed this high range style so the vocals could be heard over the music. I love Rush and love to concentrate on isolating each doing their parts. Each is a master. Together their art is a masterpiece.

Thank you so much for reacting to a Rush song. I had the privilege to see them live on 5 occasions and i can tell you that this was a power trio of virtuosos. There will never be a three pc ensemble like Rush, nor do I think you will find as unique a vocalist. I think it would be really cool for you to jump ahead from the '70s and have a listen to a beautiful song from their last album. The "Garden" from the album Clockwork Angels. A very fitting ending to a great concept album as well as a long musical career. Reflecting back on ones' life. To best compare to what you just listened to please react to the live version. As you listen to more of their songs you will wonder where Rush has been your whole life. Again, thank you so much, I love your reactions.

Geddy's voice is unique. This was a band with incredible talent for a trio.
I really enjoyed hearing such a thoughtful (and enthusiastic) analysis of Geddy's singing here. It sounded SO effortless back then. I always loved the clarity of his diction and the richness of his vocal timbre. Two of my favorite performances of his happen to be in two of their most popular songs, "The Spirit of Radio" and "Limelight." Would love to hear your reactions to and thoughts about those songs. Thanks from a lifelong Rush fan (who first saw them live in 1979) for featuring this one.
What a band! I was lucky enough to see them on the Farewell To Kings tour and they completely blew me away. One of the best shows I ever saw and I've seen a lot of bands over 50 years. It never ceases to amaze me how Geddy managed his great vocals while playing such intricate bass.
