The reason that that part of the farm floods is because it is a much lower elevation than the rest of the farm.
The house probably won't flood because it is a much higher elevation than that low part of the farm!
      Hopefully, that helps!

@@RWorley3sl - Uhh, for feral cats living in a barn with minimal human interaction is the best outcome. You might be confusing feral cats (basically wild cats with no human socialization) with stray cats (basically homeless house-cats. Are significantly more friendly and trusting towards humans.) Ferals don’t want anything to do with us. So a life where they get to live as solitary as they want while also having the health benefits of a house cat is awesome.

If the bird is to big to fly it is too big for a hawk to fly off with. Ducklings would be at risk but you probably don't need to worry a lot abiut hawks after the first 9 months. Ground based predators and eagles will still be dangers though. And even if the can't fly they can still wander off if they aren't fenced in. You'd be amazed and how fast and far they can waddle.

I bought a 4’ Gallagher poultry fencing so we’ll see how that goes this summer. Cheers, Chad.

Can't help but wonder what Victor's story is. A stray? Lost family pet? Abandoned by his family? Though be extra careful when handling him until you've taken him to the vet. Wear protective gear so you don't get bitten (like thick gloves) and don't take it out of the trap if it's struggling or shows signs of aggression. It's a traumatic experience I'm sure and you won't really get to know it's personality in that moment. It might be terrified and aggressive when you trap it but later turn into the sweetest snuggle bug. Only time will tell. Good luck.

@@susanbender2953 yep, I hope that one day that we have gotten enough of a grip on the feral cat population, that having cats on purpose. We are no where near there yet, but I would really love it if we were having pregnant cats coming in who haven't been looked after and her kittens end up with nutritional defects.
Cats need eary human interaction if mum is up for letting her human friends help. Even if its just pick up and weigh for the first little bit.
(Though honestly I don't really think that humans will ever get enough of a grip on cats without homes to actually need to breed them, as we have learnt with this pandemic a lot of humans just don't care, and even with area with just a few, they ruin things for the rest of us.)

@@anon5119 They do. Birds molt a couple times a year and grow a complete set of new feathers, including flight feathers. And I imagine it's easier on the chickens to have some feathers trimmed than to have someone pulling them out if trees so they can be secured for the night. It's not usually necessary, but it doesn't really hurt the bird when it is.

I like to duck hunt at a refuge in California, and I've noticed a couple things. Most if not all ponds have some form of grass growing in them whether or not they're flooded for the hunters. This helps develop a root structure to help keep the mud in place and prevent the ponds from getting too mucky. And as you mentioned about adding a clay layer to your pond, the idea is exemplary. Your pond will hold water for a while, but your ducks or wild ducks will flock to if in search for food as well as water. This will damage your layer of clay and cause leaking. An idea would be to thicken the layer of clay and add a layer of silt to cover the clay. This way the ducks won't get too deep into the clay and the clay can hold more water better.

And there's nothing more gratifying than a flock of birds running to greet you with wings a'flapping.
