You haven't met my grandparents, half their backyards are gardens (in Canada) & they have so much home grown food. My grandma has a strain of lettuce she got from Croatia like 50 years ago from another family she was in contact with. It's not genetically modified at all & I can never find lettuce that tastes that good in salad. I'm just curious, where do the seeds come from in lettuce? I'm going to have to learn how to grow that so I can pass it along to my grandkids in the far future.
People donate hit deer all the time if the animal just died and was initially healthy. It's part of rural / hunting culture. Most deer deaths via cars are accidental and it's a good way to dispose of the body rather than waste potential deer meat that can feed families. It is possible, but not feasible. In order to do this you'd have to dedicate most of your productive hours on getting food. No time for a job or virtually anything else.
That is definitely a good point. This type of lifestyle requires a lot of work. From experience, maintaining a garden/farm is a pain. Especially if you have to go to work. So I had to do everything during the weekends and whenever I could during the week. Assuming you didn't work, it'd actually be a fairly decent way to live. You can spread out the work evenly over the course of the week rather than a many hours on Saturday or whenever possible.

I'm vegan and I think it is perfectly fine what he did. His lifestyle, killing a few squirrels, is better for nature than the lifestyle of many other vegans. Also because producing crops on a big scale automatically means the death of many insects, mice etc that live in those fields.
That tomato rant was so compelling it made me smile, I mean his energy is contagious. You can tell he really loved doing this and learned from it. I want to have that passion for whatever I do in my life.
I accidentally grew some tomato plants through compost and was able to enjoy my “first” garden. So I completely agree that there is a special happiness or fulfillment with growing your own food. I hope to have a bigger garden one day.
Emilia Treviño Because they ARE. When tomatoes grow bunched up together on soil that is leeched of nutrients like on giant tomato farms for grocery stores and food markets, they don’t produce as much sugar or citrus since they do not go through photosynthesis and convert energy into sugars as much as home grown tomatoes. The same thing is typically true for all other veggies.

No chickens? You can have chickens in most small towns, you don’t even have to just use them for meat, you can get eggs which have a good amount of protein!
not an efficient method for protein, you have another mouth to feed
A lot of small towns won't let you have chickens either it really depends on where you are.
@@jakejakedowntwo6613 it's true. But chicken can also eat your foodscraps (veggies, etc.) So, that would actually solve 2 problems at once. There is a school in France that has a henhouse, the kids take care of the animals, learn more about where their food comes from and feed the chicken with the cafeterias foodscraps
@@valeriepoulin4297 I agree.
I live in the country so I really can't talk (I have plenty of chickens, including some "designer breeds" just for pets and show)
But most small towns will allow up to 3 hens. And they common, laying breeds are pretty hardy over winter and do well still with only foodscraps (although if you can provide more, do. Chickens need ALOT more calcium then veggie scraps. Of course that's also a way to rid of Egg shells...my chickens love egg shells and it's actually really good calcium as they use alot of it to make the shells.
@@klover_leaf we also feed my chickens with egg and eggshells sometimes. Mostly when they don't come out perfect or the shell seems a bit brittle. I live in Canada so the chickens are inside from November to April but we tried to give them a lot of space still. In the summer they are outside but still not aloud to roam free because of regulations.

Chickens don't normally lay year round. At least in my experience
@Women & Women First Even in the summer that's only 1-2 eggs a day though. There wouldn't really be enough imo
@@sydneydowd8969 if they are cold then they won't lay but if you have a heat lamp they lay all year around.
@@shellbell4765 in the best of conditions yeah. My family had one for our hens but they definitely stopped laying for months in the winter. Ymmv though
The reason I didn't have chickens is because I would have had to grow and forage 100% of their food too and I didn't have the experience or the space to easily do that. Next place I settle down I intend to. have chickens.

Everyone talking about the squirrels but aren’t paying any attention to the fact that he ate deer that were hit by cars
People donate hit deer all the time if the animal just died and was initially healthy. It's part of rural / hunting culture. Most deer deaths via cars are accidental and it's a good way to dispose of the body rather than waste potential deer meat that can feed families. He on the other hand, went out and intentionally killed the squirrel. I'm also fine with that as he didn't just kill it to kill it, but put the carcass to good use to help sustain himself.

Think of doing 50%. Or 25%. Then it’s still that much better, but with less commitment.
correct.
Also: No need for a job.
If the work of gardening is done as a community and the bounty is shared, I think everyone can get food and also have plenty of time for other things

home grown tomatoes are so much better.
