Suggestion: I went to a pho restaurant, took my Thai basil stems home and put in water. They sprouted roots and now I’ve got more Thai basil than I know what to do with!

Yes, same here. I tried to start from Thai basil seeds. Didn't work for a long time. Finally got one plant from seeds. Cutting is much much easier. Since it's from a restaurant, I don't know for sure what kind it is.

I have at times pruned my Basil plants to cut off stems that were beginning to bloom, and the cuttings that were left on the soil sprouted roots and began to grow.

You’ve changed my life man. Got me into gardening and, more importantly, self-sufficiency. I’ve not only learned how “to grow a ton of vej” but I’ve learned how keep chickens and quail, to use various power tools and construction techniques building coops and garden beds, and even how to maintain and in many cases repair my own vehicles. Thank you for starting me on the path. I will continue to watch every video you release!

I love my perennial basil plant(s)! I bought a tiny one a year ago, and it grew like mad - so much so that I've propagated it through cuttings about 20 times now. Some of these little basils have thrived even in the most garbage soils in the most rock hard, depleted parts of my garden (and they have since conditioned the soil really beautifully and brought worms back to those parts). Amazing plant, and delicious to boot - I personally love the extra kick a pesto gets when made from perennial basil!

Love perennial basil. I grow it as a hedge . Can prune brutally and in a few weeks back comes beautiful new foliage. When pruning take pieces with a heel and grow in water a few weeks till healthy roots grow then plant out.

I love your channel, thank you for the time you put into your videos and your relaxed and informative clips. I have grown this perennial basil for many years, always by cutting. Mine lived well passed the 5 year mark and survived during the 3 year drought on its own
(I moved after that). I pruned it back quite dramatically as well as I put it near a path and didn't realise its size, it kept growing and thriving. I have 2 plants growing at the moment both in places that allow them to grow fully and just be. I have seen them growing with enough space around them unpruned and they are spectacular all year round with flowers and buzzing bees. I just love them.

Thanks Mark, good vid. I can say that propagating Basil is easy. Take 8 inch long cuttings and place in a glass of water in a window for 12 days or so and you should see many fine hair roots developing. Place in a pot outdoors and water well ( remember its used to a lot of water!) . Back off on the water after a few days and the cuttings should thrive and be an exact replica of the parent plant. Thanks again Mark for great videos.

I have this one, it's 5 years old and now I keep it for the bees and butterflies! I have seen a blue banded bee on mine several times. Can you put the green mango salad recipe on your other channel please. I have never found any viable seeds either. Thanks for showing what happens when you give it a good haircut, I have been too scared to do this to mine. Keen to see if you can propagate it from cuttings. The fox who took my chickens last year buried my chicken under it for later retrieval (I buried it deeper and put bricks on top to keep foxy from taking her) so it has a special place in my heart now.

herb is a french word, the h is silent in french, actually i think old french didnt even have an h in it. the british just decided to change the pronunciation of it and other words later on. the funny thing is there are other english words where british people don't pronounce the h.

I knew which one it was before you let us know because I also grow it ... perennial basil. 💚 The leaves are very intensely flavoured and slightly spicy & the bees absolutely love it for the flowers. I’ve never even used it for eating, I thought the taste was too intense. I bought it to keep the bees happy. I have lots of Thai basil that pops up every year and use that. Mine also looks its best through end of winter & spring before the Perth heat stresses it out. I have it in a large tub & find it needs almost daily watering through summer. Please keep us updated on propagating it as I’m looking at doing mine eventually.

I’ve had equal success growing from seed gathered similar to that of sweet basil when you let it go to seed, and placing a cutting in a glass of water it will soon grow roots and is able to be potted with out rooting powder and takes well to potting mix when first potted from the glass. I both every year and always litter then near my passionfruit 😉 great cross pollinators 👍

Taking basil cuttings is so easy. I turned one plant into a dozen in less than a year. You just put a piece with 2-3 leaves and a decent stem in some water in a sunny window and wait. (A few days to a few weeks depending on the season) and then once a good root system forms you just plant it in a pot. (Or in the ground)
I just tried seeds for the first time and had a near 100% success rate. Which I was not anticipating and now I have -too- much basil. If Basil was money id be Bezos.

The mites where still there for one week, but one week only they all just left. Then I noticed that the basil created like a barrier for a month around the green house. You wild see them all over my concrete floor around the garden but never on many plants cause all the plants got sprayed with oil. Needles to say basil works wonders on mites in the end most of them left

Does your perennial basil have a serrated leaf? More so than Thai basil? I think the Thai basil I got last year may be the same as yours.
Quite different growth to the usual one I've grown and here in Melbourne the Thai basil often doesn't make it through winter.
The one I have now kept growing and I have to chop it back to stop it from taking over the herb bed.
As you mention it's great for Asian-style dishes but you have to use it carefully in Italian cooking.
    Great video mate 👍

In Thailand they use "Thai Holy Basil" which has a more peppery flavour rather than a sweet aniseed flavour. Phad Gra-Pow gai/moo is a famous Thai stir fry dish using this Basil and it's delicious. He's a big Basil thumbs up for ya Mark.

We have a few of these in our vegie garden in Brisbane just for the bees. The bees love it and it brings them into the garden to pollinate the other vegies.

Looks quite similar to African Blue Basil - the only one that lives through our hot Florida summers and becomes a bush that looks a lot like yours. NO licorice flavor - it is a bit spicy and peppery with a nice full-bodied Basil flavor. Very hardy perennial.

Thyme has similar purple flowers in moderate northern hemisphere areas. Basil can be a bit of a bitch to grow if your spring/summer isn't long enough or you have uncertain seasons. Most types of mint will grow anywhere in the UK/IRE area, but they will completely takeover any area you plant them in soil, so best kept in planters or pots. That way you can control their growth, and always have enough to snip for your mint and mashed potatoes....or just have enough for mojitos all year round!

Pesto freezes very well. I leave the cheese out until I thaw it and am ready to use it.

I have bought a small basil and let it stay outside on porch, so far aphids attacked , then ants are on it now. I sprayed some neem oil mixture stay to kill those bugs and it just did not look healthy. I took it inside and it died😕So I live in Florida, USA and I went to buy another. So far I let it out only when it’s drizzling rain or very cool, as I don’t see many bugs.. and then I take it back in in real warm weather. I hope it survives now!

I love basil. I think Pacific Islanders grow them around their house because they are scared of ghosts...fairdinkum! LOL I only started eating them when I came to Australia. And, I can't remember seeing any Islanders cook with them. We do sew them in with our flower leis. Maybe today's Islanders use them because of popular Asian cooking.
I often plant them along my pathways to the front door. I pick a piece and pop it on my ear or hairdo when I go out. I smell like basil. I only eat the ones in my backyard :)
