    7:16 wild recirculating hole that is folding in on itself in a constricted death creek canyon (aka: mini gorge of death) thingy with a secondary boil line that is going at like 45 degree angle uphill and also folding over on itself; Dane, not even breathing hard at this point and in a calm voice, is like "wow that was kinda rowdy"... dude... seriously?...

    Watching you paddle a kayak is mesmerizing. Absolutely epic. The holes in that last mini gorge were crazy.

    Everything except that last gorge looked fun! That last spot that Dane got stuck in should be called Fight Club.. Rowdy for sure! When currents in a gorge get backed up and you have an uphill fight to get out of a hole/whirlpool kinda thing is super scary especially when you're walled in...

    Last time I saw Dane he was in diapers and his Mom and Dad were at the Gorge Games so Dad could race the Upper White Salmon. As I recall, the great slalom world champ, Scott Shipley, won by a hair. Unfortunately, the Gorge Games only lasted a few years, but they were fun while they lasted.

    So what do you do if you flip over on a shallow slide? Some type of shoulder roll?

    • @danejacksonkayak
      @danejacksonkayak  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Realistically you just avoid it as much as possible, and as long as you keep the boat straight it is fairly easy to avoid flipping. But if you do catch an edge you try to save it by bracing with your paddle, or protect yourself with your elbows and get upright by rolling up as quick as possible.

    Are shallow runs like this more or less dangerous? Or just different kind of danger?

    • @danejacksonkayak
      @danejacksonkayak  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is definitely challenging whitewater, compared to many sections. The steep slides at the beginning are more dangerous than deeper and less steep sections. The rest of the whitewater is challenging, and due to being out in the wilderness you have to be more cautious as well.

    • @MikeySkywalker

      @@danejacksonkayak Dane!! I finally got a response. Do you win the Green Race every year? I have always wanted to ask you that. I see other documentaries with other great Kayakers. But you always seem to do the smoothest runs. If you will do me the honor of one more question. Do you own Jackson Kayak? Is it a family company? And finally is your dad Eric Jackson? My dad loves him.
      Edit: Sorry that was 2 questions! Actually 3!!!
      Edit 2: Never even thought about the added danger of being out in the wilderness. Thanks Dane for introducing me to such a cool sport. I have been doing much safer runs. Just got a Jackson Kayak too, for my mom. What is best paddle for 65 year old pond Kayaker aka my mom. She is 5'3". Never even made the connection to your last name, which is why I am wondering if you make Jackson Kayaks. Knowing the best Kayaker on earth owns the brand makes me think I did right by my mom on the purchase.

    • @dMaribo
      @dMaribo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kayaking is not as death-defying as it appears. People like Dane are very well-trained and qualified to run this type of water. Average kayakers, like me, insure that we are qualified to run the lesser level of water that we do, all with plenty of safety. It is not risk-free, of course, but the drive to work every day is probably more dangerous.

    • @Fknheck
      @Fknheck 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Maribo for sure I understand that, I could be a kayaker and I think I could be a really decent one too. I had a wavesport ezg that was too big and a paddle that was too small. As a raft guide I don’t make enough to afford the good gear so that’s part of the reason. I got my roll and my back deck too but just never got back into it. Not to mention a couple different times I nearly accepted water into my lungs lol
