Chris, you are such a a gentleman and most of us can only hope that our children and grandchildren will feel half as responsible as you did. I know I felt that way with my own parents and never felt regrets either. God bless you for all you have done, and what you will do in the future. 🙏

I'm here because of Chris and his journey. I began watching his videos soon after my Mama died after an 11-year Alzheimer’s journey. I struggled after she died. I began healing when I began watching. I finally understand the journey I was on with Mama and the one I'm on now.
I worked part-time (I'm a Consultant) and my children were young adults. I'm in my mid-50s.
It's been 3 years since she died and I feel honoured that I had this opportunity to care for her. I feel privileged to have known her before she was my Mama. I miss her daily.
    I'm healing!

It’s not just about money. It’s a full commitment to an elderly person who you love. Chris Punsalan gave us all a view of how he cared for and loved his grandmother. I took care of my mother for 18 years- supplementing her income and having her live with me. As she got older- it became extremely difficult to physically care for her and also to supplement her income. Keeping her company, taking her out in her wheelchair, helping her shower, eat, and do many of the things she needed. It was exhausting but after she passed I could not forgive myself for those moments when I felt just tired emotionally. It was a sacrifice but today I have come to realize that those years were really some of the best in my life. My mom passed from internal hemorrhaging at 97 1/2. I know too from this experience that I do not want to live to be so elderly. As long as I can care for myself I will be happy. 😊

I checked this out due to Chris. I admired his attitude and appreciated his videos. My 3 sisters and I took care of our 90 year old totally bedridden mother for over a year. It was very hard but also very rewarding! Sadly not possible to do for each other as we are all getting older with issues. It is physically hard and we will need outside care if our fails to the point of not being able to care for ourselves. Only I have children...1 son. I don't want or expect our son to do what we did for our Mom. It was 4 of us sharing the care giving with the lion share on 1 sister who lived with her. I took over 2 nights 2 & 1/2 days the care giving.

Lovely conversation. Chris has been my hero. His love for his grandmother and her love for him during the journey was phenomenal. He read her affirmations and she said them back. Every little thing he did for her and with her was loving and beautiful. Thank you, Chris. God bless all caregivers. ❤

I so get you! I looked after my Mama. I didn't find Chris' videos until after she'd passed away 3 years ago. I have laughed and cried and learnt - and felt normal because it's a lonely journey. Mama had Alzheimer's for 11 years and I was her primary caregiver. Ifeel privileged I got to know who she was before she was my Mama. I learnt to live in her space. Chris' videos have really helped me on my healing journey.
You're an amazing soul for doing this!😊

Nice interview. And I liked how your guests explained how isolating caregiving is and how important it is to have the conversations of what your parents, grandparents etc wishes are for the future if they are ill.
I wished the interview included the sobering cost of caregiving. Memory care for advanced dementia will cost $100k a year, whether in a facility or hiring caregivers at home. Medicaid does not kick in until the assets are down to $2k. Yes, $2k and there will be a 5 year look back to make sure the assets were not given away just to qualify for Medicaid.
I wish the banking guest would have talked more about how important a Trust is to protect your assets.
I don’t think people who have not experienced the cost of caregiving, realize how much they need to save. 😢

Wonderful broadcast. I think you should consider a follow-up 3 with Healthcare leaders, pharma and policy makers and continue the point Ms Glusaman brought up about the challenges navigating Healthcare for the patient and the caregiver. Also the misconception or lack of knowledge about costs associated with care. Most families and patients are painfully unaware of the costs of care and assume they are covered by Medicare and social security.

This hits the spot. Caregiving is tough but what made it easy and bearable is the unconditional love from them taking care of me when I was young, helpless and dependent. It’s a responsibility of every child in my opinion. Thank you for this interview @katiecouric.

I cried…😢 I used to be for my grandma.I miss her.12 years of my life was spent helping take care of her.I would give anything to have her back, but at the same time I know it would be selfish because she had changed so much over the years…I just miss her. After she passed I was not sure where to pick up my life because my family centered our lives around who would be around to take care of her because we loved her so much it never felt like a sacrifice.Sometimes I feel like I had been a horrible impatient granddaughter to her.Like I was just not good.I try to forgive myself some because it can get very stressful and sleepless.I just miss her so much…2 years less than a month ago.:(

      @brilove2291 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

I was 19-20ish when the journey began for me…So almost 1/3rd of my life was spent helping her and my family…Sometimes I wish I had more memories of when I was younger than how things were during the decline.I never much had time for me to be selfish and live my life for me,now I just honestly feel lost and feel like I have no idea where to pick things up.

Yes, it’s very important to be prepared for the time we can no longer decide for ourselves to make it easier for our love ones. When we took on our in laws, everything was laid on for us. Including funeral arrangements and even eulogy was written for us. It made it so much easier most specially during our grievance.

Great video! Hats off to all caregivers. I would also be very interested in exploring the "Why" of this dynamic though. Why do we de-value the lives of the disabled so much that we allow untrained, biased caregivers to assume the role to begin with? Why do we likewise assume that a relative is supposed to forsake career and personal pursuits to give "free" care to the loved one?
And why is it that this cate is unfunded, or drastically under- funded, via wages in care facilities? This is a huge- and growing!- issue, loaded with expectations...thanks for highlighting these good people in a broken system...

I absolutely totally agree, it was really disappointing seeing someone of Ms Couric"s status on a platform with such vile person like megan markle. The way she has treated her elderly father is elder abuse plain and simple! It's so shameful and disgusting but yet people have the nerves to call her a humanitarian and allow her to call herself one and get away with it! Make that make sense!
