J.S. Bach, der Grossmeister der deutschen Barockmusik! Ich liebe seine Musik! Ich bin als Jugendlicher über seinen Grabstein in der Thomaskirche in Leipzig gelaufen!
I think that you're both right. Stokowski merely arranged the music, didn't "interpret" it. Landowska played a horrible harpsichord by Pleyel BUT the one thing they did right was to make/keep the public aware of Bach, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, etc. They kept it alive so the early music movement had someplace to start from. Yes, "hip" continues to evolve & still learn things as they discover more basic info & more composers. It's an ongoing process & should never be considered "finished".
You are right that most modern instrument performances take into account the available information about Bach performance practice. Some then go on to use versions of the early instruments. However, I think it is wrong and snobbish to dismiss those who enjoy more romantic versions as dinosaurs. Richter and others like him, even Stokowski, did much to raise the awareness of Bach with the general public and with musicians. They had a genuine love for his music and interpreted it in their own way.
Occasionally some orchestras do, generally trying to observe baroque practice. Both have their pros and cons and their devotees. I think the arguments about how Bach expected it to be heard or how to be "authentic" are very debatable and not really relevant. Musicality and a feeling for the music which can be successfully brought to the (modern day) audience are what really matter.
I'm disappointed to see poor Iris forced to play pizzicato every time the texture needs to be a little lighter. Bach indicated when he wanted pizzicato--usually as a special effect, or to accompany flutes.
You have no right to call me a dinosaur and insulting people is usually a sign of a lack of rational argument. It certainly shows a lack of judgment. I am fully aware of the history of the Bach movement although I don't agree about the "misguided"course. There have been substantial changes in the approach of period instrumental ensembles and they continue to evolve. Fortunately their standard of performance continues to improve too. Some of them were initially quite painful.
Same to you. Baroque performance practice is not something which has been definitively established. Views are continually changing with more historical discoveries. The great thing about Bach's music is that it can withstand a wide range of interpretations. It is pointless and unhelpful to insist that there is only one correct way to perform it. Arguing about matters of taste is unproductive. Chacun a son gout!
I agree. Which of us can possibly know what Herr Bach liked? I suspect this is too fast for the poster, that's all. What I would say is that Herr Bach must surely approve of every one of these excellent performances.

Good voice and music
Vielen Dank für den Hinweis. Die Nennung ging vergessen. Wir haben das soeben auch im Videobeschrieb nachgeführt.
Magnífico
SEHR GUT!!!!
What an interesting aria.
Would like to listen to the whole cantata.
You can do so on Bachipedia: www.bachipedia.org/werke/bwv-139-wohl-dem-der-sich-auf-seinen-gott/
That seems a very strange thing to ask! This is how Bach expected people to hear his music.

Dieser Bass-Bariton ist durchaus so gut, dass er hier mit Namen genannt werden kann: Ekkehard Abele.

Does anybody play Bach sacred music anymore using modern instruments? It doesn't seem so mostly.
Vondervul!!

Too fast. Bach wouldn't like this. But the basso sings good.
+artois54 I wonder... How can anyone tell what Bach would or woud'nt have liked. "to fast in my opinion" is less text and more honest.

Guter Baß, die INstrumente etwas dünn.
